Bruce is founder of an alternative newspaper, The Athens NEWS in Ohio which he started in 1977. Bruce likes to travel or plan trips! When not helping travelers with vacation trips to Key West Susan loves to roller blade, swim and enjoy music and local culture with family and friends.
Susan Mitchell purchased this condo in 2011
We bought Billy's Blue Heaven because we LOVE the restaurant Ricky's Blue Heaven and noticed that the two properties are only 300 steps apart. This also means we are on the GORGEOUS Truman Annex steps from the Green Parrot, Duval Street, Pool and Fort Zachary State Park and Beach! We love the having 2 balconies.
We fell in LOVE with Key West and Truman Annex 30 years ago when the area was being developed. It's a dream come true to own and share this beautiful condo!
We're repeat guests for a reason --- excellent service. This condo has been refurnished recently with a wonderful comfy bed and beautiful living room/dining room furniture. Susan always checks to be sure everything is ok, and it is. She has given us great suggestions about Key West, which have added to our enjoyment. The bikes are a great addition to the condo. We used them daily.
Billy's Blue Heaven in the Shipyard condominiums is the BEST location for a vacation in Key West. You'll never need a car and can easily walk or ride a bike to everything. The owner, Susan, has prepared a very helpful and indepth guide making the best suggestions for eating, fun and shopping. The condo itself is very welcoming, comfortable, well equipped and clean. The beds are very comfortable and the walls are soundproof. Our group was too busy enjoying Fantasy Fest week to take time to use the pool, but it's very inviting. I lived in Key West for 14 years just 8 blocks from downtown, but just love this location. In no time you'll find your favorite places to eat, drink and play. There are many off the beaten places to find on your own. The island is picturesque and the locals are colorful--awesome material for a photographer. The true beauty of Key West is the backcountry water. Take an intimate trip with the Java Cat crew and they'll take you to some of the local's favorite spots and get you up close to nature and marine life. Don't miss out on the great live music in the evenings. Drink and be merry--Key West is safe and happening after dark. KW's is steeped in very unique and interesting history. Maybe you'll be lucky enough to befriend a Conch (native of KW) or long time resident to talk to--they're the best source of local information. You'll fall in love with the vegetation and gardens. June: mango season!! Yoga on the beach is just plain wonderful because you'll be stretching and breathing next to the ocean, in nature, under the feathery Australian Pines at Fort Zachary. The best unique all day experience in my opinion is a trip out to the Dry Tortugas. Make sure you snorkel while you're there in the protected, pristine waters. Eating and drinking is a personal thing, but my favorite places serve only local fish and shrimp and I always start my day with a fresh organic juice blend from Date & Thyme and a robust Cuban coffee from The Cuban Coffee Queen while strolling around the Historic Seaport area. Take your time and get off the main streets and really explore the nooks and crannies of this pretty little island. Traveling and finding other paradises lured me away from this little island that I miss and love. We are "One Human Family" here. And all that's left to say is "If you can't have fun in Key West then you don't know how to have fun!" Make your starting point at Billy's Blue Heaven!
Thank you for letting us stay at your condo in Truman annex. Your condo is so comfortable and we felt right at home. I especially loved the local artwork you have hung throughout the apt. We took advantage of your bikes and rented two extra for our daughters from Eaton bikes. We biked to the beach almost daily (5 minute ride) and really enjoyed the Beautiful Key West sunsets!! We came home with many stunning photographs. Thank you for your recommendation to Blue Heaven and many other local restaurants and stores. One of our favorite places to go when Blue Heaven was busy was Blue Macaw, which was at the other end of the block. They also had daily live entertainment and their staff and food was excellent too!! Your condo is in a wonderfully quiet location but only 2 blocks away from all the hotspots. This was our favorite vacation!! We were sad to leave Key West and all the friendly people. We look forward to our next visit at "My Blue Heaven" in the near future.😉️💕

We had a wonderful time, the condo is beautiful!! Thank you so much for sharing your piece of paradise with our family!!
The owner, Susan Mitchell was extremely helpful. When we had questions prior to the visit, she called us back the same evening. She sent us in email form all of the information that we needed to have a smooth stay. She was very kind and friendly.
There is a "no shoes" rule in which you keep your shoes at the bottom of the stairs. As a result, the rooms stayed nearly as clean as they were when we arrived. That is saying a lot, because there were 4 of us in the apartment for the week. Before leaving, we swept up and found very little dirt. The ceiling fans and central air kept the place comfortable. The kitchen is small, but it is large enough and equipped enough to have breakfast and lunch. It is not really equipped to cook a 5 course dinner there, so we tried some of the many restaurants in walking distance. The beds were comfortable, considering that I have back issues. It is of the coil variety and I sleep on an iComfort foam mattress at home, yet I had no problems at all. Overall, this place was clean and maintained well. In the literature Susan says that this is not a hotel. I live here, so please take good care of it. That really stuck with me, as there are personal touches all over the house, from the artwork to the fixtures in the bathroom to the mats in the closet for sitting on the beach. I really felt like a guest in someone's apartment.
This is a gated community and it has the feeling of exclusivity, as compared to the rest of the island. Parking around the island is at a premium and I appreciated having a designated parking spot for my stay.
The most fun that we had was taking the All in one tour by Sunset Water Sports. It included kayaking, snorkeling, a huge blowup water slide, jet skiing, parasailing and a banana boat ride. They took us out about a mile into the middle of the gulf side and dropped anchor. They even included lunch. As part of the package, we also were able to book a sunset dinner cruise that we took the following night.
The best restaurant that we ate at wasn't a restaurant. It was a food truck called Garbo's grill where we had fish tacos and shrimp tacos.
The worst restaurant was one that had the name "Tuna" in it. They served me tuna that was supposed to be rare, but it was raw.
Overall, I would recommend this apartment to others.
This was a excellent place to stay. Close to all the highlights of old town key west. We walked to most all of our activities for the week. We would like to thank Susan for allowing us to stay for the week retreat. Great week and would definitely recommend and come back.
