Overview

About the property

2 bedroom self-catering with own terrace and elevator.

My apartment is at the top of an 18th century building in the center of World Heritage listed Bordeaux. There is a spectacular view from the terrace, overlooking the ancient city gate, the Porte de Bourgogne.

Beyond is the Garonne river and the Pont de Pierre - the bridge over which Napoleon took his troops to Spain. You can sit on the terrace with a drink or your meal, feeling like you are in the front row of a theatre.

The apartment has a mix of modern and antique furnishings and is colorful, warm and inviting.

Accommodation is for up to 4 people, with 2 bedrooms (each with 2 single beds that can be made into a double). There is a fully equipped kitchen, with an induction stove top and an oven, and a contemporary shower room and separate toilet. The shower room looks out onto a small garden.

Wi-fi, Cable TV and free international phone calls are provided. There is also a Bluetooth speaker which can be used with your digital device, and a Dyson fan/air-purifier.

As well as the heritage listed spiral staircase, there is also an elevator. Taxis can stop outside the door and the tram stop is 200 metres away. There is also a supervised parking station two minutes walk away at €18 per day or €40 from 3 - 7 days, for a pass with unlimited entries and exits.

Around the corner is historic St Michel basilica, which hosts a daily clothing and second hand market. Every Saturday they have a large food market and on Sundays is the largest brocante and antiques market in the region.

Ten minutes' walk away is Capucins market, where you can buy fresh food, including oysters and fish from the region.

About Suzanna Clarke

I am a professional writer, renovator and constant traveller. My husband and I and love French food, wine, architecture, music and culture. Originally from New Zealand and Australia, we are now permanently based in the Northern Hemisphere with homes in France and Morocco. It is a joy for us to be able to spend part of each year in Bordeaux. The city has so much to offer and when we are away, it is a pleasure to be able to share this experience with others and help them make the most of their holiday. Our team have a vast amount of experience in meeting, greeting and making guests feel comfortable. We are happy to assist in every way.

Suzanna Clarke purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Suzanna Clarke chose Bordeaux

The first time we walked out onto the terrace of this apartment and saw the amazing view, all we could say was 'Wow'! We immediately decided to buy it, before we had even seen the entire place. It's the only apartment with a terrace like this that we've seen in this area. We love the fact it is in the heart of the historic centre of Bordeaux, yet has a sense of being peaceful and away from everything.

What makes this apartment unique

You can take your drink or meal onto the terrace and watch the world below. We've seen gigantic aircraft wings floating down the river, rowdy demonstrations, beautiful firework displays and delicate falling snow from here. Within five minutes we can be in Rue St Catherine, the longest shopping street in Europe, or at Capucins market, where they sell the best oysters, foie gras and cheeses. There is an artisan baker just around the corner, and on Saturdays a fantastic fruit and vegetable market. On Sundays, only metres from the apartment building, you can hunt for treasures among the bric-a-brac and antiques of the St Michel market. I've found some great and inexpensive collectables here, ranging from early editions of classic books, to old photos, to vintage clothing, to kitchenware, to pieces of embroidery and garden sculptures.

There is a wide selection of restaurants and bars very nearby, and the tram stop to go further afield is less than 50 meters away.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Many thanks for the opportunity of staying in the apartment. It has all the essentials and the courtesy that you show to your guests continues each time someone else stays - the food supplies which are passed on are testament to this. It is a flat with a difference, so "vive la difference".

Bordeaux is beautiful and the outlook from the terrace will stay with us for a long time.

The perfect pied a terre in Bordeaux

  • 5 of 5

It is difficult not to fall into a trap of using too many superlatives when describing the Bordeaux Terrace and so losing the impact that any review of this Bordeaux apartment merits.

The location is ideal for anyone visiting Bordeaux -- right next to the old town with all its little cobblestoned streets, its sights, vast choice of shops and restaurants, conveniently next to the main tram line, right on the river bank overlooking one of the most beautiful bridges in France -- the Pont St Pierre, and with something very special for Bordeaux -- a terrace on the top floor of the building overlooking the Gironde River.

The apartment is tastefully but simply furnished and equipped with everything a visitor needs to feel completely at home.

Bordeaux is a National Heritage Site and a must-see on a visit to France, and the Bordeaux Terrace apartment is the only possible place to stay!

Beautiful Bordeaux

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have been happier with the location. Right In the heart of the old town and minutes away from the centre, the quayside promenade and the bustling St Michel square. Full of colour and life the sqaure offers one of the best boulangeries in Bordeaux along with cafes, salons du the and restaurants. The best of which is the Brasserie next to a very quirky antique store full of tempting goodies if you have the room to take them home. Only a few minutes walk is the Marche Capucins which overflows with great butchers, bakers, small restaurants and fruiterers - open everyday except Monday. The local sqaure also houses a market each day, sometimes, a flea market, other times second hand clothes and a food market each Saturday. The apartment was well equiped with pots, pans and serving dishes to avail anyone who likes to cook up a storm. The terrace is a total bonus, overlooking the Large a port de Borgoyne which leads onto the bridge taking one to the other side of the Garonne river.

Bordeaux centre is elegant, full of good shopping and restaurants. A must to buy is Le weekend Bordeaux by Anne who has a terrific food, wine and travel blog, papilles et pupilles - worth seeking out and full of great addresses for the best ice cream shops, patisseries, spice shops et el. Written in French it is easy to navigate if you understand a little French.

Would I stay at Bordeaux Terrace again? - absolutely. It's a quiet haven in a very buzzy and Bobo part of the city. Bonus is the lift up to the top floor of this ancient building or beautiful winding stairs for the young and fit. A perfect rental in a perfect city.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your excellent and comprehensive summary of what Bordeaux Terrace and the surrounding area has to offer. St Michel is one of the most fascinating, colourful areas of the city, and your review captured it perfectly! Kind regards, Suzanna Clarke

The nightly dilemma

  • 4 of 5

The seven days of nice weather we had were offset by the dilemma faced every night when we had to choose to be either be very warm in bed or cool and be bitten by mosquitos, the choice was ours. This very nice apartment has windows on 3 sides, perfect for cross ventilation on cool evenings. The only drawback is that none of the windows have screens and so to open them to try to cool the top floor apartment that has baked in the sun just invites in the skeeters. So make the choice sleep to the roar of fans or be cool and be a blood donor.

We come from Canada where mosquitos carry West Nile encephalitis and so for us the choice was easy, we took the 8 hours of sweating option. Spoiled an otherwise nice vacation.

The apartment is as nice as the photos show, with the exception of the terrace, it’s better and bigger than it looks. (approx 6’ x 20’). It was as the owner says ‘newly renovated’ but that was several years ago. A can of white paint and a couple of hours work would really make the place sparkle again and it would be good value for the money. Now it just looks a little tired.

Florence was there as promised and provided a wonderful introduction to the apartment and her city. She invited us to call her at any time with problems or questions. We took advantage and she was very helpful on several occasions. Good ambassador for the owner.

The big question she could not answer - why don’t the windows have screens?

Owner's Response: Insect screens were installed on all the windows of the apartment, and the terrace door in 2015. So we no longer have problems with mosquitos. The apartment has also been re-painted and there is some new furniture since this review was written.

Very good!

  • 4 of 5

The location is great, right in city centre, walking distance to main old pedestrian area, supermarket 5mins walk away and a tram stop virtually opposite.

The flat itself is also comfortable, good kitchen facilities and the terrace is awesome.

Couple of minor points, my family and I were bitten pretty badly by mosquitoes on the first night not realising this would be a problem which made the rest of our stay a bit uncomfortable! It may therefore be a good idea to warn people on email prior to arrival that this might be the case at certain times of the year sop they can buy some spray. Also the plug in mosquito deterrents in the flat I believe did not work or at least were not hugely effective.

The toilet room seemed a bit out of keeping with the rest of the flat (eccentric is probably how I would describe it!) but aside from that it was a great flat for our purposes of exploring the city, a little home away from home, with the roof terrace overlooking the bridge being fantastic.

Would definitely visit again although would wear mosquito spray from the first night!

Thanks,

George

A great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this apartment very much. Its location makes it a great base from which to explore Bordeaux and the way the owners have set the apartment up makes it very comfortable and inviting. The owners and the caretaker are very pleasant and helpful to deal with. Bordeaux is a lovely place to visit and this apartment is a great place to stay.

Simply lovely!

  • 4 of 5

We love the character of the whole place; and with a clothes washer too. It's great to have so many windows to open to appreciate the summer weather.

All appliances are in good working order, and how nice to discover a well-supplied kitchen and contemporary bathroom. The apartment was so welcoming, we had a tough choice between exploring Bordeaux and relaxing in this prime location.

Thank you for offering your prime real estate for rental. Your apartment made Bordeaux a highlight of our vacation.
