About Susanna Hughes

I grew up in the village of Marazion, went to school in Penzance, and have always loved West Penwith. My 2 children also love Marazion, as do their partners and now my grandchildren. We all visit regularly, separately or sometimes all together!

Susanna Hughes purchased this cottage in 1983

Why Susanna Hughes chose Marazion

We chose Sarnia because it is adjacent to Tresco, which was the cottage I grew up in, now owned by my niece Jane (the two cottages can be rented together and would then accommodate 12).

What makes this cottage unique

Just 2 minutes from the beach

The beach is very safe for young children

The causeway to St.Michael's Mount is 2 mins away

Very close to all village shops and amenities

Excellent restaurants just 2 mins walk away

All mod cons as furnished for our own use.

Storage heaters and woodburning stove.

Back patio and balcony get afternoon and early evening sun. Ideal for BBQs.

Fabulous cottage in a perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

The Sarnia is a super cottage centrally located in the beautiful town of Marazion. It is well equipped and very comfortable and although the parking is not outside we had no difficulty getting a space at the nearby car park for £4.50 for 24 hours. The cottage has everything you need for a great stay and my two children, my husband and I are already thinking about a return visit!

Lovely week away

  • 4 of 5

Had a lovely few days away in Marazion! The house was an ideal base for touring West Cornwall. Marazion was great for relaxing and people watching after a long day sight seeing.

Positive first time

  • 4 of 5

First time we've ever stayed in someone's property rather than doing the B&B thing, would definitely recommend from this experience. The home was comfortable, just the right décor, very homey feel and great facilities provided. I only leave one star off as no parking and having to pay £4/day then £5/overnight gets costly, but hey ho. But lovely quiet location down a side street, great outside area for eating outside, bbq etc. Nice thick walls so quiet property for sleeping in. The only thing waking us was the fact we had the windows open as hot weather and the birds waking us up! Not a complaint, a luxury really. Picking and choosing when you get up to have breakfast and having more than just a bedroom for a holiday is fantastic!

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay, But so sorry you had to pay so much for parking, I was there for a few nights just before you, and I only had to pay £5 per day/night. A week is £35. I think it's best to say, ' I'm here for 4 nights ' and pay up front! Another time, maybe it's negotiable! Susanna

Beautiful cottage in the perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful long weekend at Sarnia in May this year, from the first impressions when driving into Marazion, we knew we would get the relaxing break we were hoping for, and when we arrived at Sarnia this was confirmed. It is a lovely, bright and welcoming cottage in the perfect location just a minute walk from the sea. It feels like a home from home, and the owners really have thought of everything you could possibly need. We spent time in the village browsing in the shops, had drinks and cream tea at the Godolphin Hotel with wonderful views of St Michaels Mount and some lovely walks along the beach. We visited Lizard Point and spent a day at St Michaels Mount, as well as a lazy afternoon enjoying the sunshine in the garden. At the end of the day it was lovely to curl up in the cosy living room to watch a film on Netflix, as I said, the owners really have thought of everything! It was our first visit to Cornwall and certainly won't be our last, and we would definitely stay at Sarnia again.

Car: recommended

Please note that we have not got our own dedicated parking. Parking is in the local car park less than100m away. We are no.2 on the list waiting for an annual pass, but at the moment you have to pay £4.50 in the summer for a 24 hour period. Free out of season.

Sarnia Cottage is in the pretty village of Marazion about 2 miles from Penzance. The village has a general store, Post Office and bakery along with a number of art galleries. There are four pubs all serving good food. We would especially recommend The Fire Engine at the top of the village and The Godolphin on the sea front. The restaurant 'Ben's Cornish Kitchen' has a national reputation.

The historic St. Michaels Mount can be reached at low tide by the causeway or a relaxing ferry ride at high tide. The Castle is a National Trust property.

Marazion is a wonderful place for children with a safe, sandy beach and a small river in which dinghies can be used. It also has a great adventure playground. Sarnia is just 2 minutes walk from the beach, sailing club and playground. Further along the beach are facilities for learning to windsurf, paddleboarding and kite surf. There are surf schools at nearby Sennon.

Marazion is on the South West Coastal Path which has fantastic walks. Close by is the Lizard peninsula with its' dramatic coastline. Travelling west you can visit Chysauster, Minack Theatre, Lands End, Sennon and Mousehole. St. Ives is less than 10 miles away. Penzance also has a lot to offer.

Other Activities: bird watching, kite flying
