MAUSSANE ALPILLES

"Situated at the foot of the Alpilles, Maussane is a pleasant village that stretches in the Baux valley amid extensive olive groves and stunning scenery. In this tourist area, Maussane-les-Alpilles retains its Provençal authenticity, with its olive groves, ancient ruins and traditional festivals.

This green village offers the freshness of its old fountains and wash houses. Provençal magic here, with its procession of sunny images, olive oil taste and warm wine, song of the cicadas and unavoidable folklore.

Although Maussane is located along the old Roman road which connected Arles to Aix en Provence, there are only few remains of that era. Its history is linked to that of Baux de Provence where wartime inhabitants would take refuge.

Gradually, Maussane became independent and prosperous quickly thanks to the abundance of its sources and the fertility of its lands. In the 1830s, Maussane possessed more than 650 hectares of olive groves and no less than 12 oil mills.

With 400 000 liters of oil products per year, the village is the largest producer of olive oil AOC France. This 'green gold' has promoted the village on five continents, offering the amateur a range of surprising and unparalleled taste.
