Lovely lake property, but needs a thorough cleaning

  • 3 of 5

We spent March and most of April here. My first impression of the house was that it wasn't clean. The bed in the master looked like someone had gotten out of it and just pulled the comforter over the top. When I contacted Luis, he assured me his cleaner had cleaned prior to our arrival. But, that made me uncomfortable as to what else was not cleaned. I washed the bedding right off.

The house needs a thorough cleaning. The futons and pillows in the tv room are dirty and smell musty. There are dead bugs and filth on the window sills and behind the furniture. The kitchen cabinets need a thorough cleaning as well. The blinds at some of the windows are falling apart.

The well water smells and tastes awful. We had to buy all of our consumable water. Also, when doing laundry, clothes came out discolored. If staying here for only a few days, this wouldn't be an issue, but is when staying for several weeks.

All of this being said, the property is lovely. It is quiet and peaceful, and we enjoyed all the birds. The screened porch and front porch are the best features of the house. But, it would be nice if all the stuff on the front porch was stored away.

We have rented houses in Florida for 15 years, and this is only the second time we have had to stay in a property that was so unkempt. I encourage Luis to do a major cleaning before continuing to advertise this house. There isn't anything he can do about the well water, but there is a lot he can do about the condition of the house.

Owner's Response: We have hired a new cleaning person since this last incident. The cottage is our personal HomeAway for my family and it is stage the way we like to use it when we are there. The porch in question has all the water toys, life jackets, fishing poles and such that we leave there to share with other guest. The home was built in the 50's and it has a long section of jalousie windows which needs to be clean constantly because they allow bugs to get between the glass and the inside screen. We stated in the rules and info of the cottage the issue about the well water. As we stay there, the water is ok for bathing, general cleaning and laundry but tenants should bring their on drinking water and ice. It is part of our aquifer where there is more iron oxide in the water and it can affect the smell and taste of the water. It can also affect the color of delicates and general laundry. Since we purchase this vacation cottage we continue very year to remodel sections of the home. The jalousie windows and the well are on the list of redo's for this 60+ year old lake cottage. We hope to get to them this year.

Perfect lake adventure

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week and all the comforts of home plus! Everything you would need for a relaxing time on a beautiful lake. The access to the water from the dock or the beach made it so easy to kayak or just splash around. Fishing was an extra added treat.

We will definitely plan to stay here again!

Lovely Lakeside set-up

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at this property for a little over 2 weeks after having surgery at Shands and needing a place nearby to recover. The house is in a nice, quiet little town and is on a beautiful lake. For recovery, you could not ask for a better, more tranquil location and we really enjoyed it a lot.

The house has everything you would need to make it comfortable. The kitchen has everything you need to make and serve meals and we were all comfortable there (2 couples).

The only reason I give it 3 stars is that it could use a professional cleaning. We cleaned up after we left but there are things that need the attention of a professional cleaner such as the window sills in the family room. A guest should not be expected to clean things like that. Also, the pillows in the family room are way past their prime and taking on a musty smell, throw them out and replace with indoor/outdoor pillows that will hold up better in a damp environment.

That being said, we would definitely recommend this house and would stay there again ourselves. You really can't beat the tranquility and the lakeside setting. We were also treated to two red tailed hawks each day in the front yard in additional to other birds. It was definitely a treat to see the hawks.

A cozy cabin with great views

  • 4 of 5

The place has a wonderful dock with table, umbrella and chairs. There were kayaks and a paddle board, but we didn't use them. The water in the cabin has an odor. Make sure to brink drinking water. The cabin is rustic, but is fine. Plenty of screened in and outdoor space

Quiet and Peacefull

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at this house for 2 weeks and found the place to be adequate, very nice location and very quite area. The house is a little old and well worn but not too bad, depending on your expectations. One bathroom is actually accessed from the front porch and is a little chilly at times. The house is well stocked and all the appliances worked fine, a/c and heat worked good. Good place for kids and pets.
