Beautiful property set among the hills of Liguria. It overlooks a typical Ligurian village and is located only 10 km away from the sea and from Sestri Levante; the closer airports are Genova Cristoforo Colombo (at 50km) and Pisa Galileo Galilei (at 110km). The village (shops, bars, groceries, newspapers, etc.) is within a short walk through a steep pedestrian track. The property enjoys beautiful panoramic views of the mountains and the sea.
The old Ligurian house, on 3 floors and 350 sqm, has been recently completely renovated and is surrounded by 4000 sqm of beautiful terraced gardens and an orchard. The swimming pool, set next to the house, is a converted water cistern of approximately 8m x 8m with overflow and a splendid view over the mountains. The west terrace offers a spectacular view of the sea and Sestri Levante.
The house has been completely rebuilt with traditional materials though in a contemporary fashion. It is fully equipped with all comforts. Tastefully furnished, the interior design blends contemporary and Scandinavian vintage pieces.
The house has been published in several important design and decoration magazines such as Coté Sud, Ville e Casali, Casaviva, Case di Campagna.
Entrance, living room with a double-sided fireplace, open kitchen and dining room, bathroom. Several doors open on the surrounding terrace and the swimming pool.
The kitchen is fully equipped with all necessary kitchenware and household appliances (built-in gas hob, oven, microwave oven and dishwashing machine).
Sitting room with flat TV and satellite, 3 double bedrooms (two double-bed rooms and 1 double room), 2 bathrooms (1 with shower and 1 with shower and bathtub).
2nd floor (attic):
Sitting room with flat TV and DVD player, 2 bedrooms (1 double-bed with a third bed/sofa and 1 double room), 1 bathroom with shower.
In the cellar there is a washing machine, a dryer and an additional fridge with refrigerator. Internet access ADSL + Wi-Fi; PC and printer for guests use.
Parking space for 4 cars.
The house is not suitable for small children because of the high terrace, unprotected staircases, high walls, overflow pool...
A cleaning lady is included for 2 hours everyday.
Additional services can be provided: transportation to and from the airport/railway station, private chef, cooking classes, etc.
I was brought up in a challenging cultural and political environment in Warsaw. In 1969, after the dramatic 1968 upraising in Czechoslovakia, my family moves to Brussels where I finish high school and graduate in architecture at 'La Cambre', the post Bauhaus school founded by Henry Van De Velde.
I spent two years in Cambridge and got my masters degree in Environmental design from MIT.
I then move to Italy where, after an architecture stage with Giancarlo De Carlo, I join the Corporate Image department of Olivetti in Milan.
A passion for modernist furniture, I collect XX Century Design pieces from Scandinavia and Brazil.
I pursue my career as an architect and art director for private and commercial projects.
I have a passionate approach to architecture adn design and my interests embrace visual arts, communication and new media. I love our country retreat where I spend as much time as possible...The property is named after my father, Leopold Unger, journalist and writer who loved this place as much as I do
Monika Unger purchased this estate in 2003
I fell in love with a romanitc ruin, embraced by a Wisteria tree overlooking the small Ligurian village of Castiglione Chiavarese, with views of the mountains to the east and sea to the west. A lot of hard work to push the project through the Italian bureaucracy, the property was finally ready in the summer of 2008...
Villa Leopoldo is a beautiful place for people of all ages! We stayed for a week with two families with teenaged children (11 in our party which the house easily accomodated). Everybody loved the place with the fanastic views and the hardest part was convincing the others to leave the house and enjoy the surroundings. It was great to see everyone finding his favorite spot and enjoying the place. The design, the pool, all the rooms, the views, the outside table, the BBQ place, the groceries upon our arrival, we all loved it. It was great meeting Monika as well, she is a lovely person.
The location of the property is perfect for sightseeing as well and the environment offers so much. We followed Monika' s advises from the vademecum and visited Sestri Levante (a great and very lively town), we took a train to Cinqueterre and walked the trail, we took a boat from Sestri Levante to the awesome Portofino. Highly recommended, this villa is definitely the ultimate holiday place!
10 of us spent a week at this beautiful property celebrating my husbands 60th birthday .
Perfect in every way ... The photos did not do it justice !
Very comfortable with excellent facilities . And a daily housekeeper .
Stunning views were ' the icing on the cake ' !
We reluctantly left after a week to continue on our travels across Italy and would have no hesitation in recommending this property .
Ps .. Ask for Luisa to come prepare a meal at the property . Very special .
We recently stayed at Casa Leopoldo for a week in June with a large party (8 adults, 4 children). The villa is really beautiful- just like the pictures, and more! We had more than enough room for all of us and were able to spread out throughout the villa. There are so many private spaces, both inside and out, and we never felt cramped. Monika was a great host and left us well stocked for our first day and was extremely responsive to any questions asked during our stay. The grounds of the villa are gorgeous and our boys loved playing outside. The pool is stunning as well. It is a bit of a trek to get to the beaches, however we felt the villa was a good "home base" to go everywhere we wanted. It was always nice coming back to the villa, that was cleaned daily while we were out I would add, and relax in our large and very private space. We cooked a lot during our stay and I have to say it's one of the most well-stocked kitchens I've ever been in- possibly better than mine at home! We had a lovely dinner from Chef Luisa and her mother on our last evening as well.
Thank you Monika, we enjoyed our stay very much!

My family has rented a number of vacation homes through VRBO. And a quick plug for them, we've had absolutely great success. I tend to go by the pictures first. In evaluating a rental I ask how realistic were the photos; then, how realistic was the description. Casa Leopoldo exceeded its advance billing on both counts. The Villa is stunning in every respect. The views are awesome and I can't say enough about the quality of the construction in every respect. The phrase "spared no expense" comes to mind. I'm not sure we would have changed a thing.
There were 8 adults in our family and the villa accommodated us easily. The roads up to the villa are a bit of a challenge but we had a 9 passenger van and we managed without a problem. We used the villa as a base for day trips to Cinque Terre, Lucca, Sestri Levante, and an overnite to Florence and it worked extremely well. On Monika's advice, we cut back on a couple of longer trips and had more time to enjoy the local area. Florence was wonderful and Lucca was a pleasant surprise.
Our stay here was a truly memorable part of our trip to Italy.
Casa Leopoldo is superb in every way imaginable. Furnished beautifully, well stocked with an abundance of towels, kitchen supplies, every amenity possible. An ample supply of lounge chairs to enjoy at the pool and get swept away by the views. Daily maid service an additional bonus. We should have saved time in our busy schedule to spend a day or two at the villa, buts its location near the beach towns of the Italian Riviera made it too easy to reach Camogli, Santa Marguerita, Portofino, etc. Schedule a dinner with Luisa and bring an appetite. If opportunity allows we will return.
Impeccably maintained, beautiful house with spectacular views in a lovely little town. The hardest part about staying here was trying to decide which view to take in from one of the many outdoor seating areas. Monika the owner is a wonderful person - fun to talk to and full of life. She had the house stocked with groceries upon our arrival and took care of our every need. The housekeeper, Yami, is likewise a pleasure. The house was equipped with everything we needed for our stay. Our family of six (two teenagers, two adults and 2 seniors) had no problem getting around the property and enjoyed all the space we had. The pool was an absolute highlight. I also loved the steps that lead from the property down into Castiglione Chiavarese (a very close walk but not for anyone who has difficulty with steep steps). With its close proximity to Sestri Levante, the location of the property is perfect for sightseeing. We were able to take a ferry from Sestri Levante to Cinque Terre and a train from Sestri Levante to Santa Margherita/Portofino. We also drove into Santa Margherita one night for dinner (an easy drive on the highway). Dinner at nearby Agriturismo Il Castagneto was an amazing experience (Marco was kind enough to make the reservations for us). Don't miss out on seeing the church in town. The inside is surprisingly ornate for such a small building. The locals are very friendly as well. The only downsides were the mosquitos and ants (but that's just a part of vacationing in the countryside). So just be prepared with lots of repellent and anti-itch cream, and keep the windows closed at night to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
The property is located 10km from the Sestri levante highway exit and 15km from the Sestri levante downtown and beaches, 15km from Moneglia, 30 km from Portofino and the Cinque Terre, 50km from Genoa, 100km from Pisa airport.
Walking distance, through a steep path, to the village of Castiglione Chiavarese (café, groceries, pharmacy, butcher...)
Intersting spots inland: Varese Ligure, Sarzana, Lucca, Florence
Great small towns along the cost towards Genoa: Chiavari, Rapallo, Santa Margherita as well as Portofino and the city of Genoa.
Great spots towards La Spezia: Cinque Terre, Porto Venere, Lerici, Tellaro...
