About Don Carson
Susan until 09/09 was director of Canopy Studio, an aerial arts teaching and performing center in Athens, GA. Don built Canopy Studio and did the rigging and technical work there. He now makes carbon fiber dance trapezes and sells them all over the world. Susan still teaches some workshops and master classes around the country, but mostly she teaches occasional workshop/retreats to aerialists that come from around the country to the aerial dance studio that Don built next to Marshbreeze (which opended April, '13). They met in New York City (where Susan taught and performed and Don was a commercial photographer) before moving to the SF bay area for 9 years, then to Athens for 10 years. Now they are full time in Darien.

Why Don Carson chose Darien
We decided that we love the marsh more than the beaches. There is so much wildlife just off our deck. It never gets dull. One minute it is tranquil with a golden glow sunset. Then, other times we are treated with a symphony of thunder and lightning. We like the proximity to Savannah as well as the civilized Jacksonville airport.
What makes this House unique
Fabulous for bird watchers.

We loved our stay at Marshbreeze despite the unexpected heat wave in May! The home was stocked with everything you could need and more. Linens, blankets, towels, condiments, shampoo, Wifi, TV, sound system, etc... I have never stayed anywhere that I have had so much thought put into the comforts of the stay. The place felt like home when you entered and exceeded our expectations. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen provided every appliance you would need. The screened in porch was wonderful and we spent every night listening to the birds, frogs, and relaxing with nature. The kayaks were great with life jackets provided. You have to pay attention to the tides, but that is the marsh life! Bikes are ready and available with safe, quiet, roads to ride. The ferry is within visual distance to Sapelo Island. The place is remote, quiet, and serene, but withing 30 - 45 minutes from the hustle of Savannah, Jekyll, or St. Simon if you so desire. There are excellent restaurants in Darien and Brunswick. Owners live right across the way and were there to greet us and even helped my father carry some items in. They were there for introductions and questions, but provided privacy. It was nice to know they were close when we left, but answered questions before and after checking in. The ramp proved helpful for those that could not do the steps. The hot tub was awesome, despite the 100 degree temps! We had age 23-83 and all found something wonderful to remember from our trip! Thank you...we will be back.
Marsh Breeze is a "must" for nature lovers and those hunting a quiet place to relax. The large screened porch provides unlimited opportunities to enjoy the sights and sounds of the marsh. Anything you may need during your stay is available - from a well stocked kitchen to kayaks, bikes and a hot tub!
Enjoyed having you. Please come again.
A solid 3.5 stars
The area was exactly what we were looking for: peace and quiet, so 5 stars for this! The area provides excellent birding, and close enough to explore the hotspots of the surrounding areas. The house needs a little TLC spring cleaning interior and out; the property is beautiful but would benefit from some organization, cleaning, and upkeep. I attempted to use a bike, and picked out the best one I could find, one that wasn't extremely rusted, duct taped, or needing repair, only to have the brake locked/rusted on the front tire. It was good resistance training, so I can also look beyond. Perhaps, bring your own bikes for those seeking longer treks. The photo that is advertised on VRBO as pic 16 out of 17 of the ocean in front was a bit deceiving. Unless a hurricane comes through, I don't believe any guest will ever experience that abundance of water. You will see channels during high tide, and that's about it. So for those hoping to experience an ocean setting, keep searching. The weather was a bit too windy for canoes and kayaks, we tried, but didn't paddle too far. The porch is lovely. The southern food at the local hidden diner gems is amazing. The house is well stocked with everything a guest may need, and suited our needs. But in comparison to other on-water VRBO places we have stayed at, this one will receive a lower rating than previous vacation rentals that had the same or even cheaper rates. Don and Susan are also quiet and I think it is handy to have them close in case a guest would ever need anything.
I hope you did notice the positive benefits of our changing out all the screens to the anti-no-seeum variety on the porch, including putting on screens underneath the deck. We also redid the support and siding on a corner of the deck. Now we can get to the outside, which will be pressure washed soon. I agree that some of the inside does need a paint job, but it is extremely clean. I don't recommend eating off the floor, but you could. I'm surprised you couldn't find a bike you liked. I always keep 6 or 8 out that are very serviceable. You must have found the three set aside in the corner of the garage that needed maintenance. The water does get as high as shown in the photos during several times during the year, and, of course, it gets much higher than that during a hurricane. Normally you can expect good kayaking during high tides at least half the time. We could have taken the kayaks to a place nearby to set them in, too. I wish you had let us know of these issues at the time. That's one of the positve aspects of having us next door. Hope to see you again one day.
Nice spot but needs update
Nicely located house in a remote area (although owners' house is close-by) with nice view of the marshes. The house itself needs some update especially in terms of furniture.
Marsh Breeze Revives My Soul
I fell in love with this part of coastal Georgia the first time I visited and have returned many times over the past several years. This cottage is my favorite place to stay--not only because of the extensively equipped kitchen, the Tempurpedic beds, the outdoor hot tub, and the full length screened back porch, but also because Don and Susan are such warm and responsive hosts. They live right next door, are leaders in the local arts community, and can point you in the right direction for anything you want to see or do while you are in the area. I'd be happy never to leave the property. There's a lovely two mile walk to Sea Breeze Island that starts right out the front door; the dock to Sapelo Island is about a mile in the other direction; there's a bike path to Darien that starts a little ways down Highway 99; and birders will find plenty to see through their binoculars, especially during winter migration. My favorite place remains the back porch, where I can watch the sun glinting on the water as the tide fills the marsh and recedes again. This place revives my soul.
The only thing more wonderful than this review is having you stay at Marshbreeze.
Gorgeous view, private retreat in the heart of nature
The house is comfortable with all the necessities of home plus the added luxury of the incredible marsh view. Couldn't have asked for a better vacation from the hustle of everyday life...quiet and calm with family. Plugged or unplugged, this place is perfect for getting away from it all.
We enjoyed the kayaks and the ability to put them in the water right outside at high tide. We traversed the tidal marsh and saw dolphins and lots of birds.
The house has tons of creature comforts like a fully stocked kitchen... plenty of dishes, pots, accessories, and staples in the pantry to make cooking easy. There are games, books, satellite TV, blue ray player, wifi, hot tub, and more. No need to bring much from home. They even have bathroom supplies in case you forget something. And, the Carson family is right next door if you need anything.
The screened porch is the bomb. With plenty of seating and a table to relax around with a meal or a game, you can sit outside in comfort and enjoy family and the view without being "bugged."
Such wonderful accommodations are hard to find. We loved it! Come see what you are missing!
As I mentioned to you, I know you enjoyed your stay, because I have never seen a family stay at the house as much as you did. It was a pleasure to have you. And thanks for leaving everything in great condition.
Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge with 1000's of birds in nesting season only 25 min. away is unmatched. There are many historical sites, including forts, plantations, and churches. Sapelo Island is a 15 min. ferry ride away. It has incredible history, wildlife and beaches.
