Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cabin in Woods Landing-Jelm

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6-8)

The River Guest House, one of several historic log cabins, at the Woods Landing Resort, is nestled in the cottonwoods, right on the bank of the Big Laramie River. This cozy cabin offers three bedrooms, one bath, newly remodeled (2011) full kitchen with cooking utensils and dishes, laundry room, and a large mudroom. The cabin is heated with a forced air furnace, along with a woodstove. The Big Laramie River is right out the back door and Jelm Mountain is across the road. Sit out on the front porch and watch the mule deer wander by, along with an occasional moose, elk, bobcat, coyote, or black bear. Mountain biking and hiking trails start on our property and head west, up the hill to join up with miles of trails and roads, in the Medicine Bow National Forest.

The Woods Landing Resort is a historic roadside retreat located at the base of the Medicine Bow Mountains, approximately 27 miles southwest of Laramie, Wyoming. Originally a saloon built by Colonel Samuel Wood in 1883, Woods Landing became a regular stop for lumberjacks, freighters and stage drivers because it was at the intersection of three roadways. In 1932, the owners built a dancehall and a few cabins for vacationers, including the River Guest House. The dancehall was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Today the Woods Landing Resort offers a full service restaurant, bar and dancehall, as well as a general store, post office, and cabins. The bar and dancehall is a regular meeting place for area ranchers and dudes, who come from the entire Big Laramie River valley, to enjoy our Saturday night dances. The café serves up the best burgers, shakes, and pie in the Valley. Besides the River Guest House, other lodging at the Woods Landing Resort includes a new luxury log cabin duplex, six rustic log cabins, and 10 recreational vehicle spaces. In all, we can sleep about 36 people, in addition to recreational vehicle spaces so we are a perfect venue for family reunions, weddings, and just plain fun.

During the summer months, you can bird-watch, raft or fly fish on the river or on one of the numerous plains and mountain lakes, within 10 miles of Woods Landing. Lake Hattie is a favorite lake for windsurfing in the summer and ice-fishing in the winter. You can hike or bike right from your cabin or drive to one of many trailheads, within a 10-mile radius of the resort. There are also hundreds of miles of ATV roads close by. Hunting for elk and mule deer is a favorite part-time in the fall. During the winter months, there are miles and miles of groomed snowmobile and cross-country ski trails, just a few miles up the road. Laramie, home of the University of Wyoming, is only a short half hour drive from Woods Landing. Visit the many art galleries, museums, or the Territorial Park during an outing to town.

Thank you for a most excellent time. My family Clan "the Planks" stayed at Woods Landing July 19 - July 26. My family stayed in the house. It was very clean and comfortable. The whole vacation was enhanced by your resort. Sitting around the camp fire with my brothers, sisters, children, grand children and parents will be remembered for the rest of our lives.

Thanks you.

Beautiful historic cabin on the river

  • 5 of 5

This was the best place ever to stay-owners Sue and Bill were great to work with. Everything was clean and comfortable except the home made screens could have been better-many spaces, we had to leave the windows closed. The other problem we had were the vicious mosquitoes, we could not go outside at all without repellent on. I know they had some recent rains so that may account for it. For some reason flies were in the house on the second day after opening up the house, I know there wasn't anyone before us this was alittle crazy, swatting was not fun nor cleaning it up.

Location was great far away from everything but close enough to drive in or up to the mountains. Disappointed that the "Dance Hall" did not have a band or dancing that would have made the place, café and bar very cute and atmosphere was great!

Relaxing location

  • 4 of 5

Though the check-in process was a bit scattered and stressful, we overall enjoyed our stay. The cabin was a good size and was clean and comfortable. The area was remote, which was what we were looking for (our phones didn't have signal but we were ok with that!).

Be sure to check in with the owner in advance. We did not receive an email outlining what we needed to do upon arrival, even though our initial confirmation email said we would. We were able to touch base on the drive and we arranged to pick up the key at the cafe before 9:30 p.m. We arrived at 9:15 and the door was locked. After knocking multiple times, we were finally let in and were rudely given the key with instructions on where to go. It was not a great start to our trip.

Owner's Response: We're sorry for the confusion during check-in. Part of the problem is VRBO's confusing process when a customer pays online. I'm so sorry that you were confused because I was too. Because VRBO has now started charging a "service fee" to renters when they book online we are going to discontinue the online payment option with VRBO. Future renters can book directly with the owners to avoid the service fee. As far as rudeness on the part of our employees, we sincerely apologize and will remedy the situation immediately. Thanks for staying with us.

Delightful Destination

  • 5 of 5

I highly recommend the Guest House on the river. Grandma (that's me!), Mom, teenage Grandson and family dog loved our stay. Hiking, panning for gold, bird watching, photography, and fabulous stargazing conditions kept us busy, and the wonderful accomodations were really a big plus. The cafe serves a great steak and the pie is super! No breakfast, though - and you will want to pack lunches to take out into the amazing countryside, so bring food. The big, comfy kitchen has everything you will need for storage and food preparation.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the great review. The cafe does serve breakfast but only on Sundays from 8 to 11. We hope to be able to take reservations for breakfast on other days in the near future. Sue

Second home

  • 5 of 5

This visit was our second time to Woods Landing, and we felt like we had come home instead of starting our vacation. The cabin was welcoming, clean, and had the feel of a family home. We were certainly surprised and within 15 minutes felt as if we had lived there for years. The views are wonderful and the early morning visits from the local canines made us feel right at home. The proximity to the Medicine Bow Range makes for quick travel times to and from the cabin. Loved it. Look forward to coming back.

Winter Storm People from Wisconsin

  • 5 of 5

I'd like to thank Sue and Bill for putting us up in one of their smaller cabins when the people from Colorado were still in the house cabin for the first night that we rented. The Colorado people claimed that they were completely snowed in, I guess. They were a larger group than we were, and Hwy 80 was completely closed down. Hwy 80 was the only way for them to get back to Colorado. I know that everyone was surprised that we were able to show up that night, but we are from Wisconsin and we don't ever close our highways down. We are used to bad weather and can handle it. Even though the first night was an inconvenience in the smaller cabin, the week was wonderful. These are wonderful hosts. If you have an opportunity, go and visit this place on the beautiful Laramie River...it is gorgeous!
