Welcome to the House on the Creek. Located just ten minutes from downtown Austin in beautiful West Lake Hills the House on the Creek is like a tree house in the woods. This private estate sits on a one-acre wooden lot and is a great escape among the deer and the trees, while only minutes from the hustle of downtown Austin. Your stay at the House on the Creek allows you access to a well-tended walking/hiking trail bordered by the creek on two adjacent wooded lots.
This welcoming split-level home features four outside decks and two stone fireplaces. 3 upstairs bedrooms (king, queen and 2 twin beds), a large sunny, sunken living room, indoor and outdoor dining areas and the kitchen are all in one big open space. Downstairs has an office/playroom, a large family room, a private queen bedroom suite, a small kitchen, full bath and a deck that wraps around the entire downstairs floor with access from every room.
A great place to escape and relax, ideal for family’s, retreats or gatherings.
The House on the Creek does have a permit with the City of Westlake Hills and does collect 6% in Texas State Hotel Tax.
This partner has demonstrated and is committed to fast response times, the best rates, and a great guest experience.
Gretchen is a writer, poet and philanthropist. She has lived in the house next door for 40 years. She purchased this property as a guest house for her friends and family. She also owns the two wooded lots on the backside of the property. She is an avid hiker and walks the trails daily. The four lots combined are a rare gem in a major city, and part of the reason you feel like you are in the middle of the woods when in fact you are 10 minutes from downtown.
Gretchen purchased this estate in 2000
Family friendly home with lots of acres on the property to enjoy the outdoors. Near the creek and Lady Bird Lake. Owner seemed like a genuinely nice person who is concerned and goes out of her way to make sure the guests have a safe and pleasant stay. Property manager very accommodating and responsive and maintenance man helpful. Lots of fun bonuses on the property and in the house for young children and active adults.
First off - I love that we had a place big enough to hold all of our friends for a birthday get away. And the place is really roomy for that. But there are a few downsides. It is really dated, appliances and furniture, and needs new paint. The set up is different and made it hard for all of us to gather together upstairs together which is where the kitchen and most of the rooms are. There needs to be more seating and entertainment in that sunken living room because most people gather there. The kitchen is small - only two people can be in there cooking and that was tight. The pictures don't really reflect the age of the house. And according to other guests, beds were way too soft. But it has stunning views, alot of space to stretch out and even a zip line for the kids (we didn't have any). I think this would be better suited for families with children, just need to watch out for the amazingly steep driveway. But its tucked away in a quite neighborhood (Lyft drivers had a little hard time seeing the turn but still got there) and not far from downtown Austin - a 10 to 15 minute drive. We had a lot of fun and made it work. And everything we needed from linens to dishware was provided which is really necessary with large groups. Definitely recommend for families.
This property was definitely a place I enjoyed coming back to after being out around Austin all day. I had a large group and it was a great way to relax at the end of the day after exploring the city. Rana the property manager was very friendly and always available when I needed to reach out. I would definitely come back next time I visit Austin!
The house is large and perfectly divided for a large number of guests to have their own areas. Lots of group space upstairs and downstairs, including decks surrounding the home. Great playroom furnished with toys, too!
I left you a few notes on things that could be improved on, but I didn't get to mention the things that we loved. The upstairs living/dining area was so pleasant, and where we spent most of our time, there were 10 of us. (More dining chairs and living room seating would have been appreciated, we made do by bringing in 2 of the outside patio chairs.). The one frying pan took about 30 minutes to clean each time it was used, please consider getting another one. The fireplace worked beautifully, and even though it was not really cold enough for it, we enjoyed the one night we used it immensely. The older grandkids loved the zip line, couldn't wait to get up the next morning to try it again. All beds were comfortable with adequate linen. It was like staying in a tree house, which I loved. There are so many different levels both upstairs and down, I would not recommend it for anyone seriously disabled. I have bad knees, and it was a challenge, but worth it. The hiking trails were wonderful for the athletes in the family.
Just want to say thank you very much for the use of the house.
Our family had a very nice time at this property.... it is great for kids as they have swings and playhouse... it is also very quiet and peaceful... we even saw deer walking right through the property! It is also in a good location to Austin and airport and the many parks and food truck areas.
10 minutes from Downtown Austin. 2 miles to Bee Caves Road where there are two major grocery stores, fast food, banks, kinkos, stores, and restaurants. 3 miles from Barton Creek Mall. 2 miles to Zilker Park where there is Barton Springs Pool, canoe/kayak rentals, soccer fields, disc golf course, a children's play scape and train. Also, where ACL festival is held.
Other Activities: Zilker Park, Shopping, Kayaking, Biking, Boating.... Although you will feel like you are in the woods you are just minutes away from everything in Austin, museums, shops, the Bat's, bars and restaurants, lake activities, golf
Golf: Lions Municipal Golf Course is only two miles away and is opened year round. http://www.austintexas.gov/department/golf But there are other great golf courses in Austin as well.
