Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday apartment in Tours - Les Carmes

Elegant and modern comfort in an authentic frame for 4 to 6 persons + Baby

On the first floor of a 19th century lime stone mansion protected by the National Monuments Chart your self-catering apartment opens its 4 large French doors on a quiet leafy square.

Entirely renovated in 2012, keeping in mind the historical aspects, the high ceilings with their molding, the plain oak floors, it now offers an elegant and modern comfort.

You enter into the living room, a bright & spacious room opening to the square with 2 French doors from which you might catch a glimpse at the slate- covered medieval house on the other side between the leaves.

To the right is the entrance of the Littre suite, which opens as well onto the square. From its French door it will be easier to see the lovely front of the “Ecole des Compagnons” followed by the St Saturnin’s church, the remains of the former convent and now a part time exhibit place, then the banks of the Loire river.

To the left, past the dining area, is the Balzac suite, while the kitchen is at the back.

Thanks to its floor plan, Les Carmes is the perfect location for either a family vacation or shared by two couples who can from each enjoy total privacy but still meet in the living room for a Scrabble game or in the kitchen with a glass of “Noble Joue”, a local wine,in hand.

The main room:

As you open the entrance door, the main room reminds you of the history of the mansion: Oak floors, mouldings and trim. The ceiling, over 3 metres up contributes to the feeling of space and freedom. On your right is the living room area with its convertible sofa and the two Archibald armchairs inviting to some relaxation. Modernity has not ben forgotten, with the digital TV and its 150 channels, the Wi-Fi, and a stereo as well. The house phone can as well be customized with your own Skype account. On your left, is the dining area across from the kitchen. On each side of the main rooms are the bedrooms suites.

The bedrooms:

The 'Balzac' bedroom, in honour of Honoré de Balzac, a XIXth century French writer who was born in the city and kept coming back all his life to find his muse, is 14m² (150 Sqft). Usually considered as the 'Parent's suite' it has a Queen size bed where you will sleep away the hard work of a tourist's day! By the window is the writer's desk where you will be able to write down your memories unless the Casanova armchair welcomes you for some reading times. From the bedroom you have a direct access to your private bathroom equipped with a bathtub and toilets.

The 'Littré' bedroom on the right of the main room, slightly smaller with its 12m² (130 Sqft offers the polyvalence of a king bed or two single beds. The room has its own private entrance if need be. The room has also its own bathroom equipped with a multi- function shower and a private toilet.

The kitchen:

Some people will tell you it's the most important room in a French home! This is probably why we spent some extra time in designing the room during the recent renovations. As a result you will find there all the modern equipment you can expect: Oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, induction stove,, dishwasher, washing machine... Breakfast was not forgotten either with its toaster, coffee maker and electric kettle. In the cabinets you will find all the utensils you may dream of to cook memorable meals.

The Private Courtyard:

Nothing too exciting there but it’s a safe place to park your bicycles for the night.

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

This is a very late review but better late than never. I was part of a group of 5 ladies who stayed in this apartment. Words to describe it...wonderful, central, clean, tasteful, comfortable. We loved our stay here. Everything in it was as stated. The agent explained clearly where everything was and how it worked and as none of us could speak French, her communication in English was excellent. When our group meet together back in Australia and we talk about our stay in Tours, we all have smiles on our faces remembering our experiences and our great accommodation. Thoroughly recommend

We agree with the previous reviewers!

It's hard to add much to what has already been said. The apartment suited us very well for our week's stay, and the owner's representative (Gisele) handled our arrival and departure promptly - and I'm sure would have addressed any problems or concerns, but we never had any! Good location for seeing both the city and the region, facilities in the apartment excellent.

Excellent Proerty and Well Located

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was as advertised and very well appointed. The kitchen was a favorite as we ate in for our breakfast and evening meals. The stove cook-top uses induction heating a first for us and excellent, very quick to heat. We traveled by automobile just about every day to other towns and the parking garage nearby was quite convenient as was highway access. Overall an excellent stay.

Owner's Response: Dear Bill, The kitchen in a French house is one of the most important place! When time came to choose its equipment we wanted to offer our Guest the best in term of technology but also the most eco-friendly thus the induction cooktop. But this was not the only effort we made to make Les Carmes a Green accommodation. Our electricity provider, for example, guarantees us a 100% eco-friendly electricity from renewable sources like solar, wind, water... This is one more of our difference at Etape de Charme.

Brilliant apartment and location. Recommend highly

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at the apartment for 13 weeks while studying French at a nearby language school. We wanted a home away from home and were lucky enough to find this apartment. It's located on the first floor of a 19th century mansion and looks out onto quiet Place de Carmes. We had no problems with noise from other tenants in the building.

The apartment has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms separated by a generously sized dining and living area which has large french doors providing wonderful light and views. The modern kitchen allows for daily meal preparation.

Fabrice and Frederique (owners) have renovated and furnished the apartment to provide a stylish and comfortable living space which is ideal for a family, 2 couples or a group of friends.

The location of the apartment is brilliant. It is situated in the old historic part of Tours, a minutes walk to Place Plumereau which is a fantastic large square surrounded by cafe's and restaurants.

The apartment is close to a medium size supermarket (Carrefour) and Les Halles, an undercover market where there is fantastic local cheeses, wines, meats, seafood, fruit and vegetables, breads and pastries. The outdoor farmers market is also there two mornings a week. Lots of fun.

5 mins by foot is Rue Nationale, the main shopping street in Tours with the tram line - very convenient. The Loire River is a 2 minute walk from the apartment.

15 minute walk to the train station where trains leave for destinations throughout the Loire valley. The apartment is an ideal base from which to explore the Loire.

Fabrice and Frederique are great to deal with and make the booking process so easy. Highly recommended.

Absolutely Awesome Apartment

  • 5 of 5

My husband and myself stayed at F&F's apartment for 1 week over the course of our daughter's wedding to a young Frenchman she met while studying in Tours. The apartment exceeded all our expectations, to say the least! We visited Tours in 2009 and when the wedding was planned we knew we wanted to stay in the Place Plumereau area. We were thrilled to find the apartment was only about 1 block from the heart of Place Plumereau rather than the 2-3 we thought it was by the map of the area! Location, location, location..with none of the noise you might expect. We hosted get-togethers with both the French and Canadian guests/family and all wondered if we had secretly won the lottery! Absolutely beautiful, with all the amenities you could want. Both owers and the housekeeper were very helpful the one time we contacted them during our stay. We were only about a 15 min walk to Cathedral St. Gatien, 10 min tram ride to downtown Tours, 20 min drive to Amboise, 30 min to Chateau Villandry and some wineries. Absolutely perfect. We would definitely recommend this to friends and relatives...ideed our daughter and her new husband would love to stay here whenever they come back to Tours!

Owner's Response: Dear Wendy, Thank you so much for your warm comments on Les Carmes. It was a real pleasure following the wedding organization and helping as much as we could. We are glad you found staying at Les Carmes was a complete experience and not only renting an apartment as this is what we strive to offer to our Guest. We’ll be delighted to have you again as Guest every time you’ll feel the need for a break in Touraine. Kindly yours, Fabrice & Frederique

Charming, spacious and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Fabrice and Frederique, the delightful owners of the apartment were extremely friendly and helpful. Fabrice collected us from the train station and transported the 4 of us, and our luggage, to the apartment which is situated in the original medieval sector of the historic city of Tours. Metres away from Place Plumereau which is packed with a host of reasonably priced restaurants, surrounded by timber framed multi story biuldings. The apartment was well equipped, great bathrooms and fully equipped kitchen, dining area and comfortable sofas decorated in a traditional French style. An extensive library of tourist and reading material was available as was the free wifi. Always only a phone call away, Fabrice and Frederique were only too happy to help with any enquiries.

Located centrally for road access to all of the Loire valley's Chateau's from Angers to the west to Blois in the East. We even managed a trip to Le Mans to visit the motor museum and the cathedral which is full of Plantagenet history. The apartment was only 100 metres from the new tram in Tours which gave quick access to the shopping precinct.

I would highly recommend this property to anyone visiting the Loire.

Owner's Response: Dear Dave, It was a pleasure helping you in setting up your trip then, when your travel agent had the brilliant idea to reroute you on a 14h train ride, to suggest an easier way to reach Tours and find the appropriate timings. Don’t tell anybody but we love it! We also feel that it is our duty to make sure your vacations is filled only with good memories of our Country. Kindly yours, Fabrice & Frederique

Just under an hour away from Paris by TGV train and a tad more from London, Dublin, Porto, and many more, in the middle of the « Garden of France » The Touraine region is a welcoming place well known because the Kings of France built there over 200 Royal Castles since the Renaissance The mild climate all year long is also a reason why the area is the third best wine region in France.

More precisely, it’s in the medieval district of Tours almost at the junction of two major rivers, the Loire and the Cher that we welcome you in our vacation rentals. You might be travelling with your family or coming for business, be it a couple of days or weeks, we will find a suitable and memorable housing solution for you .

“Look up and admire” is written on a plaque at the beginning of Blanqui street. The streets in Tours are like a history book. From the RomanBaths, to the medieval brick and timber houses, often leaning forward or sideways, then further to the lime stone houses, a regional tradition, each step will take you on a journey at leisure.

In the midst of the medieval town, a stone throw away from the lively “Place Plumereau” or the busy “Rue du Commerce” the Carmes square is a secluded area. The square itself is a history lesson: Initially a convent, then a fish market it is now a quiet square tucked away in a leafy shell. The mansion where your self-catering apartment is located is from the 19th century, it is surrounded by another lime stone mansion to the right, now home of the most prestigious craftsmanship school in France (“Les Compagnons du Devoir”), a medieval slate-covered house the North and another 19th century mansion to the left.

Once you have crossed the square , it will take you a few steps before you get to the banks of the Loire river. The city has worked hard to make it a pleasant place where it feels good strolling along after a gastronomic meal. In the recent years, a “guinguette” even started entertaining people. Take a book with you, have a drink or just look at people, another favorite activity of French people. The banks are also a start for some of the numerous bike tracks, over 800km in the area. They will take you between nature and history at your pace.

By now, you know! Tours and its region of the Loire valley is a place where you will always find something to do regardless of the season. People might rush to the Royal Castles or the wineries but do not miss the hidden treasures. For that you can count on us, we will be more than happy to guide you in this region where we have lived for several decades.
