|Property type||chateau / country house|
Casteyre is a traditional stone Gascon farmhouse which comfortably accommodates eight to ten people. It was originally built in the 17th century as three sheep folds, or 'bergeries'. It has been transformed into a large single spacious, sun-filled four-bedroom home, all on ground level which combines the house’s rustic character with all modern comforts. The property enjoys panoramic views over the idyllic Gascon countryside. With its thick honey-coloured stone walls, it stays cool in summer, but is warm and cosy in winter.
Casteyre is situated in ten acres (four hectares) of private land on a hilltop between two sunny valleys, enjoying 360-degree views over the surrounding Gers countryside of valleys, vineyards, woods, sunflower and corn fields, farms, medieval villages, and the Pyrénées mountains. The medieval pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella in Spain runs right past the property.
The house is at the end of a lane among oleander bushes and olive trees. Guests have the use of all of the mature gardens and many terraces, as well as a croquet set, outdoor table tennis, table football and for those who want to be truly french enjoy our newly constructed flood lit petanque court (french boules). There are five different terraces situated around the gardens. All have different views and atmosphere, comfortable garden furniture and suitable lighting. There is a large salt-water swimming pool with a beautiful cascade, situated by the main terrace, overlooking the surrounding landscape (heated upon request). The pool is lined with non-slip crushed marble; at one end is a shallow area with roman steps where children can play safely. The pool is surrounded by a well-stocked border planted with lavenders and cypress trees. It can be floodlit at night, as can the gardens and terraces.
The house is full of light-filled rooms with high ceilings, original oak beams, shuttered windows, and exposed stone walls. The floors are made up with restored old tiles and strewn with antique rugs. The rustic oak front door opens into a large hallway which leads to the open-plan living area, furnished with large comfortable sofas and armchairs and antique sideboards. It also has a large wood burning stove, for those chilly evenings or winter breaks (in addition to underfloor heating throughout the house). The stone walls are adorned with original paintings and beautifully decorated. A dining area easily seats ten. Guests have the use of satellite flat screen television, dvd player, a cupboard full of traditional and current games, and of course wifi internet access.
French doors lead onto the first of many terraces, where guests can dine outside under a pretty canopy or if preferred choose another terrace under the stars. The bright traditional-style kitchen is fully modernised and equipped with a large fridge-freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, oven, microwave, coffee machine etc, and a bone china dinner service. For the gourmet cooks the cupboards have all utensils you would require.
Each of the four finely furnished bedrooms have luxurious en suite bathrooms with power showers, and French doors leading to the terraces.
The Green bedroom (a favourite with children) has twin beds, en suite shower room and opens onto the main communal terrace. The Red bedroom has a traditional French double bed, full en suite, plus an extra double sofa bed and its own door to the gardens.
The Gold bedroom has a queen size bed, full en suite, and patio doors to a smaller terrace shared with the Blue bedroom, which has a Victorian double brass bed., and shower room.
All bedrooms are exquisitely decorated and furnished. An extra toilet is available in the hallway.
In addition to this wonderful property we have a small collection of various farm animals. There is plenty for children to see : the donkeys, miniature goats and Loulou the friendly pig. Fresh eggs are available during your stay from our very own happy chickens. There are also several cats and three small very friendly dogs, including Digley the extra tiny dachshund who loves to play with children if allowed.
Please note as the house and outside access is all on one level, it is also suitable for disabled and elderly guests.
Casteyre is a truly magical place and infact........simply Paradise
Being half french and half 'Hertfordshire' UK, and lucky enough to be brought up in both countries, it was just a natural step to move back to the country of my birth. Far from the pollution and stress of the UK, I soon discovered that the Gers is truly a little bit of Paradise 'far form the madding crowd'. As a wildlife artist , this area is made for those who love animals and birds and the fabulous natural beauty that Gascony has to offer. The views are stunning, the weather generally always good, the locals are charming and so friendly, and of course, as I also love cooking..its a cooks heaven here! Since moving here, my life has changed radically...from a more formal life in busy London and Buckinghamshire, to a simpler but rewarding and healthier life in the Gers rural countryside. Loving interior decoration, I loved doing up 'Casteyre' and designing the garden and terraces, and the idea of being able to share it with guests every year is a wonderful joy to me. I have also just recently fulfilled another dream, which is to build a small animal park...donkeys,ponies,goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, cats and dachshund dogs......all to share with friends and guests. Its all hard work of course, but worth every minute as I see visitors smile have fun and enjoy my home, garden and area as much as I do. The guest book says it all and I am very proud of it. It never stops of course...you only get what you put in after all! so I am always looking for new ideas and redesigning parts of the grounds and adding here and there. Several new terraces, new boules court, newly decorated bathrooms, and a new luxury swimming pool with side pool for toddlers, and handicap guests. All facing South with a shower and yet another terrace for alfresco dining with a barbecue. I am always busy..gite guests to welcome and help if required, animals to look after, cooking, gardening and maintaining the house/ grounds to a high standard. But at least I am happy and my guests certainly are too!
Sophie Allington purchased this chateau / country house in 2003
We had a fantastic 2 weeks at this beautiful farmhouse set in the stunning Gasgony countryside. The house has been lovingly decorated by Sophie (owner) and is a pleasure to relax in when it got too hot outside for our kids. There is large external pool with views that are not done justice in the photos. Sophie has a small farm with a variety of animals which our kids loved helping to feed..... in addition we were supplied with fresh eggs most days. The house has good access for disabled people which was a big plus for my mother-in-law. The property is surrounded by lovely villages and towns that are full of history and great little restaurants. The locally produced duck and fois gras is a must! Enjoy!
We stayed here with our 2 boys (age 3 and 9) and my in-laws and it was the perfect holiday. The grounds are stunning, there are places to sit and take in views, gorgeous flowers, well kept lawns and the most amazing swimming pool. The house itself is lovely and furnished and decorated to a very high standard. It was comfortable and very well equipped. It was so hot we didn't do too much sight seeing as we loved swimming in the pool and reading in the garden but the surrounding area is gorgeous with excellent markets and restaurants. Sophie could not have been a better hostess - she booked restaurants for us, gave us recommendations of things to do, helped us light our barbecue and generally was a lovely person to have around.
The children could run around without us having to worry about them as the grounds are completely enclosed and safe. They loved exploring the grounds and hanging out with all the cute pets and looking at the wildlife. We didn't want to leave and we'll definitely be back!
Thank you very much for staying at your beautiful place Casteyre. We had a very relaxing time with lots of possibilities. For example the great big bbq we used every night. We also used every lovely seat around the house with great view over the amazing varying landscape. My little niece was a big fan of the donkeys and still talks about them. We cycled a lot through the historic medieval villages dispite the pleasant warm/hot weather. The great big pool gave us nice cool down. We loved the typical English style of the interior of the house. We will not forget the beatiful place. Thanks again!
