Buena Vista was just the right spot for our first visit to Culebra. It felt like home (not just a rental). High on the hill, we saw beautiful sunrises over the harbor and caught cool refreshing breezes all day. When we weren't out exploring the beaches, snorkel spots, trails, museum, and local spots to eat, we loved relaxing on the covered front porch. We enjoyed stargazing on the roof, and appreciated the outdoor shower to get off sand after beach visits. The full size kitchen and access to a washer/dryer were a big plus. We stayed for over two weeks , and came home refreshed and enthused about Culebra and the warm, generous people who live here. Evan and Christian were very helpful and responsive to questions and details about the house.
Just months after the devastating hurricanes, the island is green again and in bloom. We felt privileged to be the first visitors to Buena Vista after the storms, and were so impressed with the amazing job that Evan has done in getting the house and the grounds cleaned up and repaired and ready for guests. A bonus was having prints of his artwork throughout the house to enjoy every day!
The house was very neat and clean. Beautiful view of the Ensenada.
Evan was available through messaging for all our questions. We really enjoyed our stay.
The perfect place for us!
We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Buenavista guest house. The location was perfect. Close to everything while still feeling secluded. The porch was awesome. Very comfy patio furniture, spectacular view, wonderful constant breeze, chickens, roosters and baby chicks. We spent hours on the patio!
The kitchen had everything you could think of. I don't think there was a thing we wanted that wasn't right there. Both bedrooms were very nice. The showers were great and the water was hot. We really loved the outdoor shower and hose. It was great to be able to wash off all our snorkel gear before going in the house.
Communicating with Evan was great! Once the TV wouldn't work and I texted him. He said he'd send someone over. Honestly I thought we probably wouldn't have TV the rest of our stay. It was a wonderful surprise when about 15 minutes later someone knocked on our door and fixed the TV. Which wasn't even broken. it was operator error. Maybe a little information on how to use the remotes would be helpful. The wi-fi worked great! Better than at home.
All in all the house was great and if I return I would definitely stay there again. OK there was a negative. That driveway! It is really hard to back out. Really really Hard! But everything's a trade off. I'd stay there again!
Perfect Family Vacation Base
This is a lovely house, sitting on a hill on the edge of Culebra's main town. It catches the breezes and has lovely views. The house is in good shape. The 2 bedrooms have comfy beds with nice linens. The bathrooms are good, and the indoor and outdoor living areas are very nicely furnished. The cookware is very good, so it is enjoyable to make one's own meals here. Plus there is a nice gas grill outside too. We appreciated the beach chairs, cooler. and beach towels that were provided, and it was a nice bonus to have a washer and dryer in the house. All of this meant we could pack light.
It is true that the roosters on Culebra take their morning wake-up duties very seriously - but we didn't mind! The early mornings on the patio with a coffee and a book were enjoyable anyway!
There was a problem with the wifi during our stay, but Evan was super-responsive and the problem was fixed quickly.
This was our first time to Culebra and we loved it. The house was a great base for exploring. We enjoyed snorkeling at several different beaches (Carlos Rosario was probably our favorite), and swimming at others. We went out for a day with Captain Bill on his catamaran, which was lovely, and we enjoyed poking around the town. I recommend the Museum (on the road toward Zoni) too. For a good dinner, try Susies, and for a cold beer or a cocktail, the DinghyDock is fun. These are just a few recommendations - there is plenty to discover and enjoy here and Evan's house is the perfect base.
We love Culebra and have vacationed here several times. The house had everything that we needed - 2 full baths was ideal. Everything was in working order. Great view from the porch and roof deck with an occasional chicken or three wandering about. Many hours reading, admiring the view and star gazing. Homeowner left great info about local activities and restaurants and was very accommodating and helpful. Had a great sail with Captain Bill to Culebrita, an amazing island. You will hear the roosters and mourning doves early in the morning reminding you not to waste a moment of time on this beautiful island. Driveway tip: go to the top of the road and turn around to enter the driveway. I highly recommend this property.
Staying at Buena Vista was one of the highest lights of our vacation--it is a spacious and serene property nestled near the top of one of the highest hills overlooking the ensenada. It is a peaceful place, despite the omnipresent crowing roosters, barking dogs, and cooing pigeons that become a kind of background music. The view was magnificent by day or night, we particularly enjoyed our evenings on the rooftop looking at the stars. Yes, the mosquitos were persistent--especially at dawn and dusk, but we either avoided sitting outside at those times or used insect repellant. We did not rent a vehicle for our first 4 days on the island and were able to walk to all 3 grocery stores and some of Culebra's best restaurants with ease--climbing the steep hill back up to the house kept us fit. Later, we rented a golf cart and had no trouble getting up the hill or the driveway--though Culebra's roads are very bumpy (plus there are speed humps on several streets) and on our next visit we will rent a jeep. The beds in both bedrooms were very comfortable--we opted to stay in the bedroom that faced the hillside to minimize noise and light while sleeping. We never used the AC, the breeze and ceiling fans kept us cool. Though some of the furnishings showed wear, we found everything here was exceptionally clean and either worked (such as the WIFI) or had a good workaround (such as abundant ice trays to replace the non-functioning ice maker in the fridge). The kitchen was well supplied with cookware, utensils, etc, but you'll need either to bring your own basic supplies (such as salt and pepper, tea, cookng oil, etc) or buy them in one of Dewey's tiny grocery stores (Costa del Sol was the least expensive but Milka had the greatest variety of staples, bread, and produce--there was also a produce stall that set up periodically in the center of Dewey). Evan's paintings, mounted throughout the house, capture the essance of Culebra's natural beauty, so even if you aren't up to hiking or snorkeling, you can still get a taste of Culebra from them. Snorkeling at Soldado was good, Tamarindo was even better, and the lower end of Carlos Rosario was the best, but hard to get to. We also booked an excellent trip with Louis Padron to snorkel and hike on Culebrita. And we had the sanctuary at Buena Vista to come back to at the end of each day! Communications with Evan were fast and his responses to my emails were considerate and informative. Thanks for everything, Evan!
