About the property

Shortlisted for The Australian Interior Design Awards 2017 Two Categories.

Amazing interiors, beautiful textures, unique design and grand scale!

Nestled under giant Douglas Fir and Himalayan Spruce trees planted around 1860 high on Wombat Hill, close to the Convent Gallery and Botanic Gardens and within walking distance to gourmet restaurants, casual eateries and eclectic shops. Set in a bamboo garden, Hardwood House surprises with it's peaceful atmosphere and the luxury of space.

Hardwood House was created by the founder of Neometro, Barry Ludlow and designer Renata Kane.

The initial concept was based on the iconic and historic buildings of the area and the use of local materials. Using the rough hardwood timber inside and out allowed the beauty of wood imperfection to enhance it's authenticity and add great texture to walls, ceilings and floors. Materials like steel and reclaimed timber were selected and thoughtfully used in every area of Hardwood House to create a dialog between history and all comforts the of modern life.

The character of Hardwood House is achieved by a modest approach to design which is inviting and inspiring with it's solid and simple volumes.

Barry and Renata wanted to express Hardwood House's character in a most humble way creating architecture so simple, that it belongs as much to the past as to the future.

The entrance to Hardwood House leads to a a grand living area which opens to a charming dining room overlooking a peaceful shaded garden and deck.

Hardwood House comprises of two double bedrooms, a spacious master bedroom with luxurious king bed and Bemboka Belgium linen, leading to a beautiful moody room with a freestanding bath and separate walk in shower.Replica geometric concrete tiles the bathroom floor, rough hardwood timber wall lining, whimsical wooden towel hooks and sparkling pendant lights are typical examples of the designers attention to detail.

Leading off the living area is large powder room with a vintage brass basin and in situ concrete bench top resting on a handcrafted vanity cabinet.

The second bedroom has has two king single beds, a moody Moooi pendant light, and quirky Bougie lamp on a rough sawn night stand. Many of the items in the house are from Space Furniture in Richmond, all of the paint and plaster finishes are from Porters paint in Fitzroy.

Hardwood House has an elegant chef 's kitchen with a large Smeg cooker, set to inspire the cooking of some fabulous meals using some of our fresh local produce. Miele dishwasher, and a pod coffee maker.

There is also an integrated European laundry with a washing machine.

Hardwood House is styled with a careful selection of objects collected at local markets, historical estates and antique shops and mixed with modern pieces in perfect harmony.

The final result is a house which is beautifully moody, welcoming and elegant.

Hardwood House can also be included with the Crow 's Nest wing, adding another stand alone option for an extra couple with it's own king bedroom and bathroom.

Beautiful tranquil modern home close to great restaurants and cafes

  • 5 of 5

This was a beautifully executed home with thoughtful owners who went to every trouble to ensure our comfortable stay. We enjoyed everything the home had to offer, it was close to great restaurants but quiet and peaceful. The home is a design haven, is amazingly clean with luxurious furniture and modern appliances. We loved our stay.

What a gorgeous house!

  • 5 of 5

This house gave me serious envy. As a lover of wood it was a dream. Well appointed, clean, stunning lines and attention to detail. Loved the bath. Comfortable bed and crisp fresh linen on the bed made for a super cosy stay. It is close to everything and so peaceful. Highly recommended!

Fabulously stylish getaway

  • 5 of 5

Renata and Barry's property speaks for itself. Beautifully styled and appointed, we chose to stay at Hardwood House for it's unique feel and 'getaway' from the norm. Tasteful and considered in design and layout, we found our stay to be very relaxing and catered for. All other amenities and tourist points within very close distance, all while feeling nicely secluded.

In addition, Renata was organised, warmly welcoming, attentive and very accommodating of our wedding anniversary and 7 week old baby.

We will return without hesitation!

Wonderful Property

  • 5 of 5

My husband & I recently had a wonderful 4 night stay cocooned in the comfort of Hardwood House. The furniture & furnishings are gorgeous and work together to welcome you and then wrap you up in comfort. Big comfortable sofas, luxurious Belgium linen sheets and towels, a lovely big bath and a fabulous kitchen, should you get the desire to cook rather than try out the great selection of Daylesford eateries. All of this creates an accomodation that is top class - and it has location! Perched on Wombat Hill near the Botanic Gardens & Convent Gallery, it is an easy walk to the galleries, restaurants & cafes. It's position also provides a view of some wonderful sunsets - the best was on our last night.

On top of all this Renata And Barry are thoughtful and discreet hosts. In the kitchen we found a lovely bottle of sparkling and some tasty treats along with a selection of coffees, teas, sauces etc.; all much appreciated. We highly recommend this property.

Chic, stylish sanctuary.

  • 5 of 5

The most relaxing, yet inspiring stay I can recall. Cocooned in this timber oasis it was hard to leave but we were within walking distance to all of the town's attractions. The design of the property is divine; very cool, sophisticated, very groovy. Bed was super comfortable and we fell asleep with the satisfying delicate perfume of cut timber and woke to quiet birdsong. Do not hesitate to book this house; so different to run of the mill (excuse the pun) accommodation and makes you rethink home design and materials. Just a perfect stay. Thank you to Renata for all your local knowledge and helpful suggestions and, of course, for building this amazing retreat.
