The Retreat - Mud Brick Hideaway

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage

About the property

Our cottage is a delightful, character filled mud brick house set in two and half acres of trees and gardens. Its a haven of peace and quiet on the edge of a small village in the lovely Southern Highlands rural area less than two hours south of Sydney. The area abounds in national parks, forests with abundant walking and cycling trails. Nearby towns and villages feature cafes, galleries and antique browsing opportunities.

It has one bedroom with a queen sized bed plus a comfortable single bed that folds away. Its in a cool area but has a glass front wood heater, a wood cooking range as well as gas heating. The kitchen is very well equipped with a chef's range with five burner gas cooktop and very large electric oven along with dishwasher and all the usual cooking requirements.

The grounds are a lovely area to sit and read, bird watch or just chill out.

Cosy, peaceful home

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful, comfortable and welcoming home with everything you need for a quiet weekend. The bed is super comfy, the hot water is plenty for showers, the kitchen has all the bits and pieces that make self-catering easy. The unexpected treat is the beautiful garden, with something interesting from every window. Zoe was very helpful with replies to all questions, and we couldn’t have had a nicer time. In terms of location, the house is on a quiet lane and feels very private even though there are other houses around. Easy, pretty drive to other nearby towns, markets, walks and food. We loved it and would go again in a heartbeat.

Winter getaway

  • 3 of 5

Zoe was very accommodating in arranging our stay - especially since we had a newborn with us (3 months old).

Despite being winter (cold!), the fireplace and the gas heater kept us nice and warm! And the queen bed was super comfy.

The lack of hot water was an issue, barely covered two adults having one very quick shower a day (not great when its very cold outside) thus, we had to boil hot water for the baby's bath.

The photos are a bit misleading too - we thought this was a rural property. It is in fact on a semi-residential street with a neighbour right next door.

That said, we enjoyed a walk down to the fire trail only 200 metres away and had a lovely stroll through the bush.

Thanks for having us - we loved the bee hive!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review Sophia. Glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for the feedback about the hot water system. In light of your comments we have decided to suspend bookings until we have a new hot water system fitted. Regarding the location, it is in a small village with a shop (as we discussed) and as such there are going to be some neighbours. we are on a large block of land 2 acres so mostly they are not too close.the house next door is mostly unoccupied.Chris and Zoe.

rustic charm

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful warm clean comfortable cosy bed, loved the fireplace and the gas heater. Sunny and comfortable little cottage with everything we needed. Private and quiet and I loved the bath with a view! Do check the instructions though if more than one or two are staying....there isn't a lot of hot water which is to be expected in this rural setting. I didn't mind heating water on the stove to top up the bath but other visitors might. I absolutely loved the place and only wish I could have stayed longer. Thank you for your hospitality
