About Greg Spillane

Sorry there is no photo but I do not want to put you off your dinner!

I'm old... (60)... and have been holidaying and or living at Sussex for 59 years.... (the family went to Minnamurra when I was 12 months old and my memory is a little idea why!) I,m a retired performer (clown, juggler unicyclist, trick cyclist who performed in a duo act for 30 years in schools, festivals, agricultural shows, shopping centres and gutters all around Australia and New Zealand. So I am quite fortunately to have travelled to and meet many great people and basically did something I loved which was encouraging children and adults to have a laugh. I certainly enjoyed teaching these circus skills because I still remember the first time I learnt to juggle or unicycle and it was a great feeling. I have also had the privilege to visit numerous remote aboriginal communities and to be welcomed into their communities. I could mention lots of places and experiences .. a few come to mind like flying the light aircraft in the kimberley and territory, (the pilot told me to stop looking at the gauges to keep the plane level but just look out at the horizon to keep everything level...I got the other 2... 30 seconds later I asked 'where's the horizon?' I'm only 5 ft 4.5 inches and was looking at the ceiling of the cockpit! The kids in the Torres Strait (Boigu Island) taking me around to their home to see their 'pet crocodile' .. very smelly and scary .. I,m no hero! Visiting the Opal mines in Mintabie (S.A) and of course playing with the dolphins at Monkey Mia (WA). I'm a lucky chap.

Now I'm coping with a degenerative neurological condition and 3 tremors (no not tenors I can't sing) which i quite debilitating... so I hope one day to get back to "Paradise on Earth". I realise I am very fortunate in Australia to have such a gifted neurological team looking after me. As they say my case is unique but my word is "I'm special". And I know in our world their are many people much worse off than I

Greg Spillane purchased this house in 2014

Why Greg Spillane chose Sussex Inlet

My parents retired to Sussex in 1986 and thats when the house was built. Dad first come to Sussex when he was 9 years old (about 1939). He passed away in 2000 and mum in 2014 ( complications from dementia) which is a horrible disease.

Anyway I bought my brother's half share of the house during 2014/15 and to help cover the costs of owning it, I decided to make it a holiday rental. I spent a lot of time arranging this, however being at Sussex was very enjoyable for me. With the help of my partner and my caretaker hopefully we have created a nice 'home' for people to enjoy Sussex as I have over the many years.

We used to camp or caravan at Alamein Caravan Park (opposite the Lions Park) and I remember when we would be leaving after 4 weeks at Christmas/January... I'd be so upset and crying my eyes out as I wanted to stay. In the last few years I've begun to control this emotion! Just!

I hope you, your family and any fur babies enjoy Sussex like I do.

What makes this house unique

I'd say that because Sussex is 12-13 km off the Princes Hwy... we don't get the same passing traffic which makes for a a much more relaxing holiday destination. However there is always plenty to do. Also the table tennis table at Pelican Calm can be handy if there is rain. And I have heard from numerous dog owners that the house really is good and safe for their fur babies. For me though it is the water activities, as I love jumping in off the wharf a swimming, floating back with the tide. However always check the water depth at the wharf and look out for passing boats. I splash a lot. Enjoy yourselves and respect my neighbours.... they are all quite good neighbours to me.. You can always contact me with any questions and rest assured will not be interrupting you unless there is an urgent message that you need to know about. Cheers Greg

Pelican Calm - Sussex Inlet

  • 4 of 5

Very roomy and comfortable home in a very good location. Everything you need is there. Supermarket 3 mins drive away and the inlet is a really short walk with great play area and picnic grounds. Beach is also really close. Yard is 100% secure for dogs and plenty of places to walk them as well. Lots of off leash areas as well. Highly recommend. Greg, the owner, provided really good directions and contact. The house itself is modern and very clean. We had a great stay.

Owner's Response: Glad you had a nice weekend and that you found everything was close and convenient for your visit. I am very fortunate as my caretaker looks after and presents the house as if it was her own and always tries to make sure 'Pelican Calm' is 'sparkling', (her words), for your arrival. Cheers Greg

The Perfect place to stay, was loved by all (especially the 4 legged member of the family)

  • 5 of 5

This Home ticked all of the boxes for us, we were expecting a house and we were welcomed straight into a home.

Everything we needed was just a stones throw away but at the same time we were able to spend plenty of time at the property because there was plenty of things for us

(3 generations) and a pooch to do and plenty of space to do it in peace.

We absolutely loved it and would love to return :)

Owner's Response: Hi Leeanne & family and of course your pooch, I'm glad you had a relaxing time at Pelican Calm. As mentioned, I've been holidaying or living at Sussex Inlet for 59 years, (I'm old) and I consider Sussex Inlet to be 'Paradise on Earth'! I'm biased! The fact Sussex is 12 km off the Princes Highway means it does not have the passing traffic and makes for a relaxing stay. I am also very lucky to have a wonderful caretaker, who really looks after the house and makes this home most welcoming for all my guests. All the best to you, your family and (of course.. your fur baby) for the year ahead. Cheers Greg

Every thing you need

  • 4 of 5

Had a great time at Pelican Calm. Nice quiet family atmosphere with a beach house feel and a secure backyard for our dog. The table tennis and other games provided ensured less TV / ipad time for our son. Maybe some new lounge chars for a more comfy time watching a DVD. Short drive to beach or lake. Great being able to walk down to the inlet and take our dog for a swim.

Owner's Response: Hi Chris I could not agree more! The lounge will be re-upholstered, new cushions and re-sprung etc. The material has been chosen (its in the spare wardrobe) but unfortunately the 'man from Nowra' could not fit me in till February. I also just brought back some more DVD's for the whole family. And thanks for the leaving the house in tip top condition. I really appreciate you doing that! Cheers Greg

Fantastic family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had such a lovely time at Pelican Calm.

The house is spacious, clean and charming. Vintage decor combine with modern beachy homewares to create a lovely and calm

Home away from home where old meets new. The house is in fantastic condition and Greg is a lovely host. We couldn't fault anything at all.

It is so well equipped that we didn't want for anything. The kids had a ball getting off their iPads and playing board games and ping pong. My husband got excited by the record player and abundance of old music available.

The beach is a short distance away and is patrolled in the summer months - it's always very quiet with no more than 40 odd people there every day we were there.

We can't wait to come back and visit again shortly.

We ventured into Huskisson one day and couldn't get over the crowds there - nothing like Sussex Inlet - it's a beautiful little town - highly recommend Thongs pizza place!

Thank you Greg for allowing us the opportunity to really relax and have a great family holiday.

Much More Than Anticipated

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Sussex Inlet and first stay at "Pelican Calm". Expectations (and more) were met at both.

"Pelican Calm" is situated at Sussex Inlet South, a short drive to the shopping precinct and conveniently located for drives to an array of beaches, lakes and other coastal towns; plus walks with Crosby, our dog along quiet tree lined streets and waterways.

"Pelican Calm" is a great "Home away from Home" which on arrival, provides complimentary chocolates, home made ice cream, plunger coffee and wine. Other features include a lovely outdoors' area with barbecue, great dining table and solar lights, modern kitchen, spacious living areas, televisions throughout, terrific games room and three bedrooms (main, with en suite). It is exceptionally clean, well appointed and very well maintained. Our host, Greg provided valuable tourist information from when we first booked "Pelican Calm". We anticipate returning to "Pelican Calm" on our next visit to the Illawarra Coast.

Other Activities:

The Inlet provides many avenues for water based activities plus surf beaches and all kinds of fishing and prawning.

Pelican Calm is ideal for your pooch and there are numerous places for doggie walks and swims. Both clubs have courtesy buses ... bowling club is only 0.5km away. There are meals at clubs, pub, cafes, chicken, pizza and fish and chips shops, 2 bakeries, butcher, newsagent, numerous hair dressers and local supermarket called SPA. I recommend you look up the local paper (called the

Inletter). It comes out (hardcopy) on Wednesdays and can be viewed on the net (free of charge). This will provide you with lots of info about Sussex and whats on. Regarding the internet I tap into my phones data and get 4G at Sussex. I think there is free internet at the RSL (not 100% sure). The biggest public hospital is Shoalhaven/Nowra 30km away. Another small hospital is at Milton 25km south. The Ambulance Station is located 500 metres away from the house in Thompson Street. (next to the Leisure Centre and Primary School). Remember it's 40 km per hour when driving past the school during drop off and pick up times on school days. This road is the way to Berrara and Kirby Surf Beaches (turn left at the Springs Rd) plus Thompson St crosses Springs Rd and becomes Medlyn Ave thru to the unpopulated kids swimming spot. Local volunteer fire brigades are at Sussex Inlet and Berrara. Great swimming spots for young ones are in front of Bowling Club, Berrara Creek (just before the surf beach) and at very end of Medlyn Ave. If there is a southerly Medlyn Ave is quite protected. There is about 200 metres of dirt road but I take a Honda Jazz down there. Remember it is dirt so after heavy rain it could be somewhat 'boggy'.

Prawning occurs in the warmer months (months with the letter 'r' in them.) Prawns 'may run' for 1 week on the run out tide when there is no moon. i.e one hour later each night. I've caught 85 lbs in 5 days and at other times very little. Go down to the wharf after dark (with a torch) and check it out, if there are any/many about. Prawns run from St Georges Basin out to sea to 'spawn'.

Kangaroos are plentiful especially at Badgee, along the parkland in front of RSL Club, over at Berrara and at the golf course. However we have them in the front yard and opposite in Riviera Ave plus along Government Rd and River Rd. It's best that little ones enjoy seeing them but leave them to their own devices... the bigger males can be protective at times. Often you'll see a joey in mum's pouch, which is what you don't see that often in Sydney town! You'll nearly always see kangaroos on the night courtesy bus coming home from the RSL around Badgee. Bird life is also quite amazing - there is a bird book under the TV in the cabinet in dining room. On top of the wall unit are different menus and 'activity pamphlets'. Remember to pass on your mobile number to me as I am the contact person if say emergency services were trying to relay a community message to residents at Sussex. I'll forward this info to you immediately and there is info around the house. Usually evacuation centres are at one or both clubs. Years ago I evacuated my elderly mum and a friend (both in their 80's) and I went down in the cars to the Lyons Park near the water. It was quite a crowd down there. Anyway just precautionary but I am serious when I say "People before Property".

There probably more 'stuff' I could mention.. but I'm having a seniors moment and forgetting things however if you have any question re Sussex or the house just email me, text, phone or carrier pigeon! I'm biased and think Sussex Inlet is 'Paradise on Earth' and there is a book collated by my partner, on the mantlepiece with that title. Most importantly have a safe and relaxing time at "PELICAN CALM'.
