Wonderful Experience in Greve in Chianti

  • 5 of 5

Our family of spent four blissful days in the Castello Di Colognole July 7-10, 2017. We cannot say enough about our experience there. It was completely unique, and so relaxing that we really didn't want to leave. We look forward to coming back, and really hope that we get the chance.

First, the hospitality:

Rita and Rosita Ricci (two sisters who run the Castello) welcomed us on arrival – texting us along the way to be sure we knew where to go. We happened to be the only guests there at the time, and they made us feel right at home. We arrived late and they recommended a nearby restaurant that turned out to be one of the best meals of our two weeks in Italy. They shared information about the very historic property and the region, and made sure we had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. They live on the property and are accessible whenever needed.

Next, the property:

This is literally a stone castle dating back 1000 years, perched on hilltop overlooking miles of gorgeous vineyards, orchards and farms. Parts of the property have evolved over time, but it very much retains its character. The owners have not turned it into a hotel, but have created several very unique apartments within the original building. The furnishings are appropriately a mix of old and regional furniture that has not been 'over-modernized' in a way that would affect the true charm of the place. It is not fancy, so if you need matching dishes and a swimming pool, this may not be the place for you. This place is best suited for those who want to experience Chianti in a very relaxed and authentic setting.

I was initially worried that our 12 and 13 year-old sons wouldn't appreciate the environment as much as my wife and I, but they loved it every bit as much. They quickly found out that the owners have two dogs, a few cats in the garden, and six turtles. The boys played with the animals and kicked soccer balls in the yard, and swam at the public pool down the road. We hiked, sketched and read under the huge shady trees in the garden. We did a day trip to San Gimiano, visited the local farmers market and some of the neighboring villages, and hiked in the hills adjoining the property. All great, though I’d recommend visiting some of the local small towns over San Gimiano.

Honestly, this was the most relaxing four days my wife and I can remember.

Heaven in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

I never knew this place was on my bucket list until the day we arrived. I cannot possibly express how incredible Colognole Castle is. It is beautifully perched at the top of a hill, overlooking the vineyards of Greve, the neighboring medieval town of Montefioralle (must see), lush gardens, and breath taking Tuscan hills. There are simply no words to capture the stunning evening views from the beautiful gardens of Castello Di Colognole ...Heaven in Tuscany!

I did not believe there could be any way to make Castello Di Colognole any better until we met Rosita and Rita! Rosita and Rita manage the castle and are the most thoughtful, caring, and sweetest hosts you could ever imagine! My husband and I came with our 3 children ages 18, 19, and 20. They immediately made us feel like we were home with family, the functional ones that is. :-)

Our family was lucky enough to stay at Colognole Castle for 5 out of our 21 nights in Europe. By far this was the highlight of our trip (Barcelona, France, Firenze, Amalfi Coast, and Rome) throughout Europe. From the great Chianti wine made from the Colognole Castle vineyards, home cooked meals created by Rita that are AMAZING (set up in advance), to the the private cooking lessons that Rita gave our children in her own kitchen...priceless!

I could go on and on about the incredible experience and memories that were made during our stay with Rosita and Rita. Instead, I will use my energy to talk my husband to death about the fact that we need to book our next stay at the castle or move there permanently if possible! :-)

REVIEW – CASTELLO DI COLOGNOLE – Under the Tuscan sun – an experience to cherish

  • 5 of 5

We have just completed a wonderful 15 days living at the castle. Our hosts, the very kind, generous, and caring sisters, Rita Meiners and Rosita Ricci, are an absolute delight and made our holiday very special.

Our apartment had fabulous views over the rolling Tuscan hills and valleys, the nearby flourishing vineyards and olive groves, the assorted farmhouses with their stately pencil pines and cypresses forming part of the architecture, and an ancient walled hilltop town in the distance. It was a great joy to awaken each day to this beautiful and tranquil landscape. The apartment was spacious and catered to all our needs. The local market town of Greve-in-Chianti with its charming piazza and a history dating back to the middle-ages is a half hour walk away, or a five minute drive. We visited daily for coffee and treats.

There is so much to see in the Chianti region, the heart of Tuscany. Despite plans to explore widely we enjoyed the locality so much that we rarely ventured more the 30 km from the castle. Every day in this beautiful setting was filled with the pleasure of immersing ourselves in the traditional landscape and learning from Rosita some of this area’s history, traditions and legends added to our appreciation. Not to be missed is sitting in the castle’s beautiful garden gazing out across the Tuscan landscape. It is peaceful and soothing environment. We regularly ate lunch in the garden and it also quickly became our favourite space to relax at the end of a day’s exploring.

One of the highlights of our stay was the opportunity, which we took on several occasions, to experience Rita’s exceptional cooking. Rita is a truly gifted cook and passionate about organic and seasonal fruit and vegetables. The four course meals we enjoyed in her home, served with the castle’s own wine, were absolutely stunning. We also had an educational and joyful cooking lesson with Rita which we will long remember.

The castle is a magical, enchanting place that will leave memories to cherish for years to come.

Absolutely wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Quaratesi apartment at Castello Di Colognole! Rosita was there to warmly greet the six of us when we arrived. She showed us around the castle and shared some of its history. They have done a wonderful job of keeping this old building authentic and in good condition. Rosita made sure we had everything we needed and made us feel so welcome. Each evening, we had cocktail hour out in the garden area with a breathtaking view of the vineyards and olive groves. We loved the red wine made here and even bought some to take with us for the rest of our trip. This is a great location for exploring the area. We spent some time in Greve and also took the bus from Greve into Florence for a day which was so easy and no hassle of figuring out where to park in Florence. Rosita's sister, Rita prepared a meal for us on our last night there. All three couples were celebrating milestone wedding anniversaries, so we decided to use this dinner as our celebration. Rosita and Rita made it special for us out on the terrace. The meal was amazing from the delicious appetizers, to the homemade pasta, pork and tiramisu for dessert. Rita uses fresh vegetables and herbs from her garden and she is a fabulous cook. We were sad to leave the castle. It was definitely one of the highlights of our 3 week trip to Italy.

A truly wonderful vacation experience in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 4 stayed at Castello di Cologne from 9/1 to 9/9 and we hated to leave! It was truly our home away from home. When we arrived Rosita Ricci greeted us with a warm greeting that made us feel that we had made the right decision in choosing the castle for our stay. We had chosen the Bacco apartment with two bedroom, two baths, two sitting rooms, dining room and a kitchen that opened up onto a magnificent garden. The apartment was clean and nicely appointed and had all the appliances we needed. The garden was gorgeous and overlooked the valley, the vineyards and olive groves. The other wonderful woman we met was Rosita's charming sister, Rita. Rita prepared dinner for us on our second night at the castle. What a cook! Vegetables were fresh from her garden and the wine from their vineyard. She made the best tiramisu we had ever eaten. From the castle we would go on day trips to Florence, Siena, Volterra, etc. And, we were there for the beginning of the Greve wine festival. Area restaurants were very good, especially the one in Montefiorelle. Greve is a charming town, where we have stayed two other times. However, the castle outdid all the previous places where we have stayed before. I would definitely not hesitate to recommend Castello di Cologne to a friend, relative or anyone wanting to visit Greve. Our thanks to Rosita and Rita Ricci for being magnificent hosts and for making us all feel like family.

Florence is an hour away by car or reliable, comfortable bus service, the recommended way to visit that great city. Siena is about 1.30 h away by car to the south as is San Gimignano with its dramatic towers to the west. Colognole is perfectly located for day trips to Lucca, Pisa, Arezzo, Volterra, Perugia, Assisi and other Tuscan sites.
