About the property

Authentic castle of 12th C.

Two charming apartments in an authentic castle dating back to 12th C. in the typical green hills of Chianti Classico. The castle has undergone various restorations over the centuries which have highlighted its architectural features giving it a particular charm and giving its structure an aura of olden times. The castle itself is very picturesque, built in stone in a square hill overlooking Greve in Chianti. It has a peaceful and a dominating position in front of Montefioralle Castle. From the garden and the windows you have a magnificent, panoramic view of rolling Chianti hills, olive groves and vineyards. The apartments have use of a large lovely private garden (450 m²). The Colognole Castle is ideally located for short day trips to all of the sights of Tuscany. An amazing experience

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here for 3 nights in August with family (wife, 3 sons ages 12, 10 and 6).

It was the highlight of our trip to Italy.

The castle is spectacular. Even my kids could appreciate that we were staying in a special place. The apartment we stayed in was very spacious. My kids had the top floor all to themselves. My wife and I had the 2nd floor with a bedroom, sitting room and small kitchen with quaint courtyard. There was a living room on the first floor as well, along with a larger courtyard. But, we spent most of our time in the backyard, with a stunning view of the surrounding countryside, and a large wooden table under the shade of an enormous tree where we had most of our meals, including some that were wonderfully prepared by one of the proprietors. We also got to walk through their a section of their vineyard.

The proprietors made us feel like family and were very attentive to my kids comfort and needs.

The castle is located near Greve in Chianti, a nice town with a nice public pool that we took advantage of. The town is located ideally for trips to Siena and Florence, as well as other smaller towns.

Only negative was the mosquitos at dusk.

I can't wait to come back.

Owner's Response: Dear wonderful family, We enjoyed so much meeting you all and we are very thankful to have booked one of our apartments. Your satisfaction for the apartment and the surrounding makes us happy. It has been also a great opportunity for our 9 years old grandson to meet your kids. The only regret was your too short stay but we look forward to your return in a future not too far. All the best to all the family.

Amazing place, great hosts

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we walked through the huge doors into the courtyard we were spellbound by the Tuscan charm. Given its a renovated heritage building the rooms are very comfortable and the views of the surrounding countryside are spectacular.

The hosts are very friendly and accommodating and will take cooking courses and sell you exclusive bottles of the delicious family wine made from the surrounding vines.

Highly recommended as a unique Tuscan experience.

Fairytale getaway

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed at Castello Di Colognole with my husband, two kids (2 and 5 years old) and another couple. We stayed in the Quaratesi apartment. From the moment I booked the property Rosita was incredibly friendly and hospitable. She always replied to any communication promptly and made sure we knew how to get there and how to contact her. When we arrived none of us could believe the beauty of the property. The pictures do not do it justice. The castle is on a hill and overlooks a vineyard. The view from the back garden is spectacular. The apartment itself had everything we could have possibly needed. The rooms were spacious. The bathrooms were clean. The decor was beautiful and to top it off, the view from every window was breathtaking.

The town of Greve was a short drive from the castle so we could easily get groceries or go there for dinner. Rosita and Rita were delightful to talk to and were there to help us with recommendations and anything else we needed. We felt like we were staying on a movie set for 4 days. Our stay here was definitely the highlight of our ten day trip to Italy. If we ever are lucky enough to come back to Greve, I will only stay at Castello Di Colognole.

Magical

  • 5 of 5

Our stay here was one of the high points of our two week family exploration of Italy. For two days we took a step back in time, soaked in the beautiful vistas and history of the castle while imagining the lives lived here through the centuries, and enjoyed an authentic Tuscan experience. The amenites are simple with rustic farmhouse charm. Rita and Rosita were the most gracious hosts, very kind and helpful. Rosita even made a special trip to town to buy milk for our grandson. Originally we only asked Rita to cook one night for us, but after the spectacular Tuscan dinner she made for us the first night we were hooked and did not bother to eat anywhere else! All vegetables and herbs were picked straight from the garden, the red wine was from their own vineyard, homemade jams from their own fruit trees, and when asked to prepare Tuscan wild boar stew for us Rosita was able to produce that, too, from her own reserve of meat. A truly special place run by two very special women.

Wonderful Experience in Greve in Chianti

  • 5 of 5

Our family of spent four blissful days in the Castello Di Colognole July 7-10, 2017. We cannot say enough about our experience there. It was completely unique, and so relaxing that we really didn't want to leave. We look forward to coming back, and really hope that we get the chance.

First, the hospitality:

Rita and Rosita Ricci (two sisters who run the Castello) welcomed us on arrival – texting us along the way to be sure we knew where to go. We happened to be the only guests there at the time, and they made us feel right at home. We arrived late and they recommended a nearby restaurant that turned out to be one of the best meals of our two weeks in Italy. They shared information about the very historic property and the region, and made sure we had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. They live on the property and are accessible whenever needed.

Next, the property:

This is literally a stone castle dating back 1000 years, perched on hilltop overlooking miles of gorgeous vineyards, orchards and farms. Parts of the property have evolved over time, but it very much retains its character. The owners have not turned it into a hotel, but have created several very unique apartments within the original building. The furnishings are appropriately a mix of old and regional furniture that has not been 'over-modernized' in a way that would affect the true charm of the place. It is not fancy, so if you need matching dishes and a swimming pool, this may not be the place for you. This place is best suited for those who want to experience Chianti in a very relaxed and authentic setting.

I was initially worried that our 12 and 13 year-old sons wouldn't appreciate the environment as much as my wife and I, but they loved it every bit as much. They quickly found out that the owners have two dogs, a few cats in the garden, and six turtles. The boys played with the animals and kicked soccer balls in the yard, and swam at the public pool down the road. We hiked, sketched and read under the huge shady trees in the garden. We did a day trip to San Gimiano, visited the local farmers market and some of the neighboring villages, and hiked in the hills adjoining the property. All great, though I’d recommend visiting some of the local small towns over San Gimiano.

Honestly, this was the most relaxing four days my wife and I can remember.

Car: necessary

Colognole Castle is ideally located for short day trips to all of the sights of Tuscany. Florence is an hour away by car or reliable, comfortable bus service, the recommended way to visit that great city. Siena is about 1.30 h away by car to the south as is San Gimignano with its dramatic towers to the west. Colognole is perfectly located for day trips to Lucca, Pisa, Arezzo, Volterra, Perugia, Assisi and other Tuscan sites. There are many other lesser-known but equally charming Tuscan hill towns close by like Radda in Chianti, Panzano in Chianti , Castellina in Chianti, Volpaia.
