Nestled in the Chippewa National Forest 3 1/2 hours north of the Twin Cities and 5 minutes out of Remer is 17 acres with a handscribed log lodge on Upper Milton Lake waiting for you to come relax and enjoy nature. It is a birdwatcher’s paradise with eagles, osprey, herons, bitterns and many other songbirds calling it home. The North Country National Scenic Trail intersects the driveway lending access to miles of trails and wilderness where you’ll find wildflowers, berries, grouse, woodcock, deer, bear, and timber wolves. Whether you want to cast a line off the floating dock in everyone’s “secret” fishing lake, gather around the campfire watching the northern lights or sit cozily inside by the fireplace this Northwood’s retreat is the place for you.

Amenities: Come get away from it all.. The log lodge was built in the 1980’s by the owner and her husband with the logs taken from the land on which the house stands. The shoreline with its water lilies floating alongside the dock was left natural so all could enjoy the way nature intended it to be. New Screenhouse with lakeview being constructed!

The Lodge is 2 ½ story walkout with deck around the main level. The upper loft is a bedroom with a queen-size bed overlooking the living room and a panoramic view of the lake. The main floor has an open floor plan with kitchen, dining room and living room. The gas fireplace is ready with a flick of a switch. There is also a bedroom with twin beds and a full bath on this floor. A spiral staircase leads to the lower level that has a bedroom with queen-size bed, a family room with pull out couch, full bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room.

Down at the lake is a floating dock with a Otter Island Swim raft, along with a new aluminum paddle boat, 2 kayaks, and a 12 ft aluminum row boat.

Activities and Attractions: Birdwatching: Many of the most sought-after birds in North America can be found. These include the Great Gray Owl, Bald Eagle, Boreal Owl, Northern Goshawk, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Black-backed Woodpecker, Boreal Chickadee, Gray Jay, Connecticut Warbler, Yellow Rail, Herons, Bitterns and Swans. In the winter you can also see the Snowy Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Northern Shrike, Gyrfalcon, and Snow Bunting, crossbills, redpolls and winter finches.

Fishing: Fish right on Milton or other area lakes, Graves, Sand, Thunder, Woman or Long Lake which are minutes away. Minnesota’s premier walleye lakes, Leech, Big Boy, Winnibigoshish are within a 40 miles radius.

Boating: Bring your canoe, kayak or motorboat for the many area lakes. Boy River, 10 miles away, is a canoe route; maps available through the Chippewa National Forest.

Photography: Whether its wildflowers, birds or wildlife you are sure to find many subjects to snap. DNR has been doing a wolf/ deer study just out our backdoor.

Fantastic Hunting and Birding Lodge: Northwoods Log Lodge is a prime area for bird watching, bird hunting and big game hunting. Special rates for hunters. Public land out your doorstep for 5 miles. National Scenic North Country Hiking Trail runs down the dirve into the house. Close to Johnson Lake Grouse hunter hiking trails and numerous logging roads. Pheasant hunting game farm within 15 miles. Big Rice Lake just south of Remer for duck hunters and many pot hole lakes in Chippewa National Forest. Deer hunting paradise out the back door on owners land.

About Eileen Menefee

In 1980, my husband, Roger and I moved north to fulfill our dream of living in the north woods. We lived in a tepee until the end of Oct. while we attempted our first construction project of building the basement for our to be log home. We had many friends come and help. It took many years to complete the log house as we had minimal money and equipment. The logs are from the property and were all hand peeled by myself while pregnant! We basically lived off the land eating fish, venison, rabbit, and all organic garden produce. Sadly my husband, Roger, passed away in 2006 from cancer. I dam attempting to keep this piece of my heart so turned it into a vacation rental to cover the costs of owning it. I have since married a wonderful man, Ed, who also lost his wife to cancer. I had to move north to Squaw Lake as we run a 1000 hive apiary. We live in another beautiful home that Ed and his wife, Nancy, built. Keeping bees keeps us busy!

Eileen Menefee purchased this house in 1975

A great getaway!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here over Memorial Day and it was wonderful. Eileen and Ed were so easy to work with and had everything ready to go for us. Our favorite part was using the kayaks, canoe, pedal boat, and paddleboard to get out to Otter Island. The house was well stocked with games, life jackets, bedding, towels, and firewood. We loved sitting by the fire pit at night and on the deck for meals. The spiral staircase was a bit scary with our young kids. And, the cabin wasn’t super soundproof when one of the kids woke up in the middle of the night. But, the open main level made it easy for our group to socialize. We went to town for ice cream, visited cute antique shops, and the kids played at the awesome park at the school. It was a relaxing, secluded, authentic log cabin. A great getaway!

A wonderful, peaceful cabin.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here as a family, ranging in age from 9 to 70. It was the perfect location, as it has beautiful, easy walks and several options for boating on the lake. We loved taking out the kayaks, canoe, row boat and paddle boats to just cruise around the lake. We fished, watched for beavers and otters, and saw several eagles. The cabin is comfortable, clean, and very cozy.

Beautiful place and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

Eileen is so easy to communicate with and her cabin is wonderful. There is so much to do if you want to just stay there. We fished, paddleboated, paddleboarded, kayaked, canoed, and walked some trails. It's so quiet, and being one of two cabins on the lake makes the lake just as quiet. The cabin had almost everything we needed which made traveling from Ohio easy because we didn't have to lug all that extra stuff with us. There are some neat towns if you want to go do something. This was our second time staying at the cabin, and I definitely think we will go back. It's wonderful!

Getaway to the north woods

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent time at this lovely log cabin in the woods last week. The cabin sits on a hill so the deck is tree level and we had a great view of many of the birds in the area. Of course the 4 hummingbirds were at the feeder multiple times a day and always provided entertainment. We enjoyed the quiet and total isolation on the lake. We enjoyed the kayaks, paddleboat and row boat. We also played bocce one night on the lawn. It was Harvest Festival in Remer where we wandered in to hear the music and check out the antique stores. It was a perfect combination of action and much needed rest and relaxation. Many thanks for the honey-we had it daily on toast and in oatmeal. We'll be back again for sure!
