About the property

Attic Apt w/amazing views, quiet street, and close to town, beaches, & riverwalk

Greetings from Jake and Cherry, we are the owners of the Crows Nest Vacation Rental (lodging) and we also live in the house.

We encourage you to watch our video found by clicking to the left of the photo of the house, and to the right to view the 50 photos we have provided for you.

Our two bedroom unit is perfect for 4 people, with views from every window. We have had 6 folks stay who used the sofa and a roll away single bed in the living room. and were very comfortable. We have totally renovated and decorated this unit in our 107 year old house.

The rental is two flights up, one stairway outside and one inside, which gives you great views to enjoy the beautiful Columbia river and the many ships that pass by daily. We will help with you with your luggage if that is a concern for you. From the windows you look down on the marina, and across to Washington with a brilliant view of the Astoria-Megler Bridge, and our view is one of the best around we have been told.

If you enjoy the outdoors and do not want to stray too far, the porch, deck, and large yard with picnic table and bar-b-que are maybe just what you need. We are at the end of the street with forested areas on two sides of us. It is a fairly easy walk down to have coffee at 3 Cups coffee roasters and some good food, or even into town if you are up for it. We love to board the Trolley below us in the summer for a hour ride along the river listening to interesting stories and facts about Astoria's history. For $2.00 you can ride the Trolley and get on and off as much as you like, or for $1.00 stay on for the whole ride, just wave a dollar and they will stop for you.

Astoria has many restaurants, micro breweries, and coffee houses to visit, plus shopping, antiquing, or visiting galleries. If you love the outdoors, there are various hiking trails and beaches everywhere. Local towns like Warrenton, Gearheart, Seaside, and Cannon Beach are within an hours drive to enjoy the beaches, shopping, and even golfing. We think a "must" is to travel up to the Astoria Column to enjoy the gorgeous panoramic views of the Columbia River, Young's Bay, Saddle Mountain and the Coast Range any time of the year.

We trust that you'll enjoy our little slice of heaven here, and we'll enjoy sharing it with you. If you have a larger group you need more housing for, there is another vacation rental two doors down and we work together to accommodate more guests in the same area. All in all, we hope your stay here will belong in some of your best memories, and we look forward to meeting you.

Thank you for considering us.

Jake and Cherry

About Cherry Chadney

We both grew up in the Southwest and raised our 4 children there, but always wanted to live in the Northwest. We spent many years living abroad for work related reasons, and from 1997 to 2011 we lived in Scotland, so after that we knew we could never live in a place again that wasn't green. So one evening in Scotland we searched Google Earth for a place to retire. It had to have the beautiful green landscape, with a river and ocean views; and we found Astoria. Astoria has everything we want, and this house is a daily reminder of all we loved in Scotland and how blessed we are to be here.

Cherry Chadney purchased this lodge in 2011

Why Cherry Chadney chose Astoria

We contacted a realtor here in Astoria while we were still in Scotland, and told her we would like to find a house with beautiful views to renovate for ourselves. She found us one that we love, and when we saw it the first time we realized we could maybe rent out the upstairs at some point if we did some modifications to the house. Apparently there have only been two families that owned this home since it was built. The house was built in 1911 by a family that had newly arrived from Finland (we found a 1915 photo). He was a builder and wisely built a large house to accommodate boarders for an income. This area is called Finn Hill and there were plenty of local Finnish workers here looking for a place to live. He also built a church two doors down from here. Apparently, the house changed hands in the 1940's and the next family lived here until just a couple of years before we bought it. They also used it as a boarding house initially for those that worked at Bumble Bee canning tuna and salmon (which is museum now on Pier 39), and we were told that the Attic Apt was built to help house soldiers during WWII. The house had 10 bedrooms when we bought it, but we turned the attic into a two bedroom apartment with a separate entrance, combined two other bedrooms on the middle floor into a master bedroom and bath, and added a ground floor bedroom to the living room footage. We also did an extensive renovation with a new walkout basement, new plumbing heating and electrical. Added a carport/deck, new front and rear decks and two concrete patios. So it's a fresh start for a 107 year old home that deserved it a fresh look.

What makes this lodge unique

We are at the end of our street surrounded by large Sitka Spruce trees that bald eagles make their nests in, it is very private and quiet here. We do have some guests like deer and other small critters which visit us often. We have two decks for our visitors to enjoy, one is covered and one has the awesome view of the Columbia River and the Astoria Meglar Bridge. We are close to town and some of our guests walk there, but a car is necessary to really see the area. Most folks don't know that in 1812 this was the first American post office west of the Rockies and that same year the British abandoned it, or this would be part of Canada today. Astoria was supposed to be the Boom Town on the Pacific for fur, timber and fishing But that all changed with the Gold Rush, and San Fransisco took that title away from Astoria. Boy are we glad they did, because Astoria turned into a beautiful little town with a rich history of its own. A perfect place to enjoy the wonderful Northwest.

 Our home enjoys beautiful views of the mighty Columbia River as it empties into the Columbia River Bar and the Pacific Ocean. There are lovely views also of the Astoria-Megler Bridge, the Cannery Pier Hotel and the Marina just below us. In the Spring and Fall, Cruise Ships tie up right below our house, and ships are loaded with logs on the docks below us before they’re off to Pacific Ocean destinations.  Outside there is a spacious covered porch for sitting, as well as a large side deck with an amazing view. There is also a large side yard with a picnic table for those you who enjoy the Pacific Northwest outdoors.  We are in walking distance of Three Cups Coffee House (our favorite), Astoria Riverwalk, and restaurants. The Trolley is a great way to see Astoria, it runs from the Marina below us to Pier 39 with a lot to see in between. The Maritime Museum, the downtown area with it’s diverse shops, lots of breweries, bakeries, antique shops, thrift stores and restaurants.

Cozy, clean, unique, beautiful home in a great location!

We loved our stay at the Crow's Nest!! Jake and Cherry are amazing hosts and the space is lovingly detailed and decorated. The beds are amazingly comfortable and every room of the house has a sweet view of the surrounding area. The street is very charming and close to the sweet town of Astoria but also at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac so it is very private. The fresh cookies on arrival are an amazing touch and the kitchen has everything you could need to make your stay more comfortable. Great bathroom, shower and towels. We will definitely be back. Highly recommend!

The property and views are beautiful. The owners were wonderful and went out of their way to make sure we felt welcome. We don't usually go back to the same spot after one vacation, but I would definitely come back here. Thanks again for a great stay!

Great Views in a Comfy Home

  • 5 of 5

Our hosts were wonderful. The kids loved the homemade cookies on our arrival. The place is in a apartment upstairs of the owner's home. It is clean, cozy, and well appointed and was big enough for two adults and three kids. We loved watching the boats in the Columbia river. I also enjoyed doing yoga on their deck. Astoria is a great little town and a great location c to explore many different attractions. Thank your for a wonderful experience.
