About Margaret Naish
Hi. I am the property manager and live in another house on the property. Formally a school principal I then had a tree change and moved here from Melbourne after my father died to manage his farm. As my parents no longer used the old farmhouse, we decided to renovate and offer a Bed and Breakfast for travellers and those who want to "get away from it all" for a few days on a working country farm.
Margaret Naish purchased this House in 1989
Why Margaret Naish chose Metcalfe
This property is a family property bought by my parents in 1989. They improved the property and added a lot of the infrastructure. My husband and I refurbished the old farmhouse, built our house and now manage the property with the BnB and the cattle.
What makes this House unique
Secluded and yet close to major centres such as Castlemaine and Kyneton and only 30 minutes from Bendigo. An easy 1 hour drive from Melbourne. Close to the Castlemaine - Maldon bike trail and local wineries at Coliban Valley and Sutton Grange. A beautiful rural setting surrounded by 100 year old gum trees and overlooking the lovely Metcalfe Valley.
Cancelled bookings will not receive a refund.
Good value at the price
Spacious, light and airy. 4yo Grandson loved the room to run around in, inside and out.
Eggs, bacon, bread, butter and Jams provided were all we needed for our daily breakfasts. Well, actually, would have been even better if there was some salt in the shaker.
Coffee maker was supplied but a little surprised that the coffee supplied was just instant - so if you needed something richer, BYO Coffee.
We drove up on a hot (mid-40s) day, but the cool change came in with a rush late afternoon and opening the south-facing kitchen windows cooled the house down rapidly.. Not sure how the house will cope with the other end of the spectrum with one space-heater in the entry-hall; there is a fireplace in the living room.
NOTE: the property is off-the-grid; they key notable here is there is no microwave to heat things up quickly; nor is there an electric kettle or phone.
The beds were VERY comfortable. Overall, so was the house in general. Linen and towels provided were very good. Great collection of indoor games - our 4yo g'son loved the "Kids Scrabble". Thankyou.
TIPS for the property owner: the generic description on the HomeAway Page is misleading - e.g. it says WiFi (there is none); the App also says "Ring on arrival for entry PIN and WiFi PIN" - this is not the case - we discovered by trial and error that the house had been left open for us, a bit disconcerting when we expected having to ring up for entry access.
All these are just minor gripes and intended to assist the property owner to improve the service/presentation. Overall a very good holiday house at a great price.
Thanks Chris. Will take your comments on board. Marg
Lovely house in a lovely setting- very quiet and peaceful
Great place to enjoy quiet, lovely views and a cute little house which was very clean and comfortable - our dog also had a great time
Thanks Jenny. The house is secluded for a quiet getaway for few days and yet handy to the towns of Castlemaine and Kyneton. Glad you enjoyed it as well as your dog. You are welcome to visit again anytime. Marg
I absolutely loved this treasure of a place. So beautiful and peaceful. And a very welcoming atmosphere. I will definitely be back!
Thanks Karilyn. Yes it is a beautiful spot, and with the newly painted interior and new gas heater, as well as the woodheater is is a cosy place to get away for the weekend. Please come again! Marg
Peaceful but needs a makeover
The farm definitely needs an update and the kitchen needed a good clean. Our peace and quiet on the night was spoiled by party noise out in the middle of nowhere!!!! The breakfast items left for us were great and enjoyed.
Thanks Barb for your review. We believe the retro character and charm of the Californian bungalow house, as the photos on Stayz show, would be spoiled with a modern update. The kitchen was definitely cleaned thoroughly before your arrival. We also believe the price charged is extremely reasonable as it includes a whole house and breakfast, and in a beautiful secluded setting. Unfortunately we have no control over parties in the district which are, however extremely rare. Thanks Marg
Back to nature
We had a lovely stay with the kids. The fire warmed up the house (we closed a few doors to focus the heat in particular areas), the paddocks provided lots of space for the kids with a highlight being the birth of a calf whilst there. The host was lovely and very helpful and breakfast covered all taste buds! If you are seeking somewhere to escape and get back to basics, this is the place to be. Kids (10 & 12) are already asking to go back. We took advantage of the courtesy pick up/drop off service offered by Elphinstone Hotel and enjoyed a lovely meal there on the Saturday night.
Thanks Kim for your lovely words. Yes do come back again if you wish. You were lucky to be here while the cows were calving - we have 4 little ones now and they're all doing well!
Wonderful family weekend
We had a wonderful time here. The cottage was lovely and very cosy with the fire heating the house all night. We enjoyed playing card games by the fire once the kids were tucked up in bed. Beds were comfy, and everyone had a good night's sleep. Breakfast provisions were delicious and snacks were a friendly welcome. There were lovely touches throughout the house to make family stays more comfortable. The teapots were also a very cute idea. We had a great time going on walks around the property, seeing many kangaroos in the morning. Cottage was in great condition for its age and we enjoyed reading about its history. We look forward to staying again. Thank you
Thanks for your kind comments. We agree, the location is beautiful and the olde style cottage gives a different view of life. Please contact me again and make another time to visit. Thanks Marg
