This stunning villa is located within walking distance of the village of Begur in the Costa Brava. It has been carefully designed in a Mexican architectural style with plenty of colors, large spacious rooms and lots of light. The villa has sea views towards the cove of Sa Riera. It has a large private garden and private swimming pool. It is ideal for a large family or two families taking a holiday together as there is plenty of room, an ideal location for visiting guests
This lovely Mexican-style house offers two stories with 300 square meters (3000sq.ft.) of living space on a 1500 square meter property just five minutes' walk below the medieval village of Begur. The property includes a lush private garden around a swimming pool at the foot of an ivy-covered cliff, all hemmed in by a tiled terrace skirting the entire house.
Broad pergolas wrapped in twisting vines of wisteria shade tables on either side of the house, and a little orchard sits on the gentle slope to one side. The master bedroom lets out onto an expansive thirty square meter private second floor terrace with views over the Mediterranean and its iconic Medes Islands.
A second bedroom is wrapped in its own terrace with a bridge to the top of the adjoining cliff. A spacious kitchen and a long living/dining area flank the rustic tiled entrance hall with its grandfather clock and open stair. Across the arched breezeway, the independent 'casita' has its own living room and en suite bath. The main hall is crowned with a pair of hand carved antique wooden doors painfully brought from Morocco. Two foot (30cm) thick walls on all sides preserve the quirky Mexican colonial tradition in which it was built, with gaily painted interior walls, rough baked tile floors and antique and rustic wood furnishings.
Nonetheless, the twenty-first century is alive and well, with high speed wi-fi in every room, and wide screen flat panel TVs, DVDs, and multi-language satellite television. The open-plan kitchen is state of the art, with a five-range gas stove, built-in charcoal grill, dual electric convection ovens, a dish washer, and washer and dryer in the adjoining pantry. A professional gas grill lets your grill master take the cooking outside, too. This house is furnished for living, and we live there most of the year, so you'll find nothing wanting. And since it was only completed a few years ago, all the amenities are modern and new.
The house sits on the steep hillside leading from the village center to Begur's most popular beach, Sa Riera. The Cap de Begur is a fan-shaped outcropping of rocky cliffs interspersed with deep cove beaches. The Cap is crowned by the picturesque Castell ('castle') around which the little town was built. From the ramparts of the Castell, one can look out over the nearby towns of Palafrugell, Palamos, Pals, and in the distance Dali's home town of Cadaques and even the French Pyrenees.
Besides the obvious tanning, bathing, and leisure opportunities offered by the town and its beaches, the area offers many, many opportunities for more organized activities for kids and grown-ups. Horseback riding, sky diving, spearfishing, sailing, go-carts, and of course the obligatory golf courses are just a few of the nearby attractions. Culture buffs will eat up the medieval towns, roman ruins, churches and old 'masias' (manor houses). Foodies will drool over everything from tapas to prime rib, while leisure professionals can just lay by the pool, drinking in the sun, the view and the Mediterranean breeze over a good summer read.
Please take a look at our other property next door. Across the bridge and up a little path, we can accommodate up to 18 people between the two:
We are a couple from Latin America. Jose Luis is from Argentina and I am from Mexico. We have travelled extensively throughout Latin America and Europe and I have lived in Africa and Asia as well. We love to read, to walk. we love music and art as you will see from the decor in our house.
Catalina Barratt and Jose Luis Garralda purchased this villa in 2005
This house is unique in its decor with its Mexican Style architecture. It is very comfortable and cozy. It is very close to the beautiful town of Begur and within walking distance of the Sa Riera Beach.
It is surrounded by wonderful small towns to explore and great restaurants. It is close to the mountains as well where you can drive a small distance and enjoy a hike or a simple walk.
Casa Olinda is a beautiful house with wonderful furniture and pictures. It is without doubt the best equipped holiday house I have ever been to - an amazingly equipped kitchen, musical instruments, lots of games. Catalina gave us a fantastic welcome and was so generous in supplying a food basket and even small touches like dishwasher tablets and sun cream. The pool is bigger and better than it looks in the photos. We had the best week and loved walking into Begur in the evenings for drinks and Tapas - it is a lovely town with live Catalan music and dancing often going on in the main square (at least in August). Highly recommended - we came with 4 teenagers who slept in the annexe which was ideal as we didn't have to tiptoe around too much when we got up in the mornings!
We stayed as a family of 8 in Catalina & Jose's lovely house & really couldn't have been more comfortable! We have never stated in such a well equipped house, you really want for nothing!
From the moment we enquired about the house to the end of our holiday, Catalina & Jose could not have been more helpful. Booking us a cab, reserving us a table, making numerous recommendations & providing maps, they really are fabulous hosts!
Begur itself is a lovely town but it is very hilly. Whilst we found it ok to walk into town, the older members of our family found it very difficult.
All in all, it is a wonderful house with amazing hosts & we had a lovely holiday - Thank you!
Este año queríamos pasarnos unas vacaciones diferentes y especiales. Nuestros requisitos eran:
Fantastic villa with every facility in a wonderful location. The house is just as good as it looks on the website and everything we needed was provided. The garden is beautiful and private and makes you never want to leave the property. However, the town of Begur can be reached on foot in 10 mins and the nearest beach is walkable. Other beaches are a short drive and include some of the most beautiful places I've ever been (don't miss Aigua Xelida and Empuries). I love this area - it has everything - beaches, forests, mountains, medieval towns and archaeological sites.
Catalina and Jose Luis are wonderful hosts - they were there to welcome us, to say goodbye, and when we needed them. Thank you both.
We had a family holiday with total of 7 people. The villa was very well equipped, spacious and beautifully decorated! The garden/pool was great for our kids to run around and for adults to relax. Location was great, very closed to the town and the beach. Our host Jose was very helpful and responded our requests immediately during our stay. We did not get the chance to meet our hostess Catalina as she was away but before we arrived she was great in responding our emails right away. We would definitely go back and stay in this villa again!
We rented the house with 2 families, total of 10 people. It was great for our 4 smaller children having a separate room next to the house while our 2 teenagers had shared their room upstairs. The villa is absolutely wonderful in a Mexican style, inspired by the origins of the owner Catalina. The location is great, good for walks, only 5 to 10 minutes to the center of Begur and 20 minutes to the beach. From the beach you can easily walk up to other nearby beaches. Begur is a small authentic village with lots of good restaurants and boutiques. The owners are very helpful and friendly. I strongly recommend the villa for relaxing holidays with children in a beautiful area.
Begur is a picturesque Catalonian town dating back to the Middle Ages. Perched on a steep escarpment overlooking the Medes Islands, it's packed with shops, restaurants and nightlife. Since the fifties, it has served as an exclusive escape for the region's celebrities and discerning vacationers. Today the town and its surroundings offer a panoply of attractions and amenities. Morning sunbathers can bake on one of seven isolated cove beaches before retiring for a leisurely lunch at home or in town. After the traditional Spanish siesta, the village streets liven up as locals and tourists alike take the aperitivo in one of the outdoor cafes on the village square. If your lucky, you can join the village elders dancing the Sardana in great twirling circles to the cacophony of a traditional orchestra after dinner. When you're ready to head in, home is just a five minute walk down the winding beach road.
Other Activities: Besides the string of beaches that surround our little hamlet, Begur's environs offer a variety of activities and amenities. Nearby you can explore the stunning medieval town of Pals, with its splendid Gothic buildings and winding cobbled streets. Just 40km (25 miles) away, you'll visit Dali's birthplace of Figueres, where you can find his museum, stopping off on the way home at the castle the eccentric artist built for his beloved Gala. A fifteen minute drive will take you to La Bisbal D'Emporda, best known for its ceramics and the nearby Roman ruins at Ullastret. The provincial capital of Girona offers its own old town with Roman and Moorish roots, as well as modern amenities for shopping, dining, and a night on the town. For those eager to try their luck, the famous Perelada Casino will not disappoint, while their more comfort-oriented companions can enjoy its luxury spa. Horseback riding, go carts, and skydiving are just a few more of the neighborhood's offerings.
Golf: The Costa Brava was recently voted 'the best emerging golf destination world wide.' The moderate climate of this area makes it an ideal place for enjoying golf and it offers a number clubs: Perelada, Torremirona, Mas Pages, Gualta, Mas Now (d'Aro) & L'angel de Lloret. The nearest, Serres de Pals is only ten minutes away. The 18 hole, par 72 course runs among pine woods, olive trees, rice fields and water features. The course flows smoothly over the original curves of the land and has three areas; Links - a reminder of British charm, Woods - holes among trees, and Lakes.
