About Scott Fox
We purchased this property in 2015. It was a foreclosure in need of a lot of love and attention, but it cast its spell on us all the very first time we saw it. Even through the layers and dirt and grime, rotten railings, and bad paint, its charm was undeniable. We have spent a full year cleaning, repairing, upgrading, furnishing, and painting. It's been a huge amount of work, but such a rewarding process watching this diamond-in-the-rough shine again. It's so peaceful and beautiful here that even a day of hard physical labor seems more like a vacation.

Why Scott Fox chose Millboro
We wanted a family getaway in the mountains of western Virginia, and it doesn't take much wandering around Bath County to make you fall in love. We have horse owners and trail riders in the family, so we also wanted a place where we could keep horses and that adjoins the national forest. Finally, we wanted a log home with enough acreage to be completely private. We wanted our getaway to be exactly that.... away from everything..... so it was important not to be able to see another house from the property and not to have traffic passing the property. Finding a property that has all these features is hard enough, but finding one that we could afford proved impossible for a long time. So when we stumbled onto this property, we jumped. Sylvan Keep is everything we dreamed and more. We invite you to come and share her magic and beauty.

The cabin was absolutely beautiful! My family really enjoyed the trip. The cabin was beautifully decorated and stocked with every essential anyone might need. It was the nicest cabin I have ever stayed in, and we have stayed in several. Thank you so much and we do plan to come back for another stay!
Wow, what a nice thing to say! We really appreciate the compliment, and we always love to hear that stock and furnishings made your stay convenient and enjoyable. We look forward to having you back soon!
This cabin is fabulous with everything you need---even a well stocked kitchen for the little things that might be needed. It was a quick visit for us but perfect to celebrate my son graduating. About a 40 minute drive to Lexington and an easy drive and GPS takes you straight to the cabin---even for guest who gathered to celebrate my son (they had no problem finding it). Loved the fire pit and out door space. Great communication from the owners about arriving and checking out. Loved how all the extra bedding was labeled that we used for the pull out couch. :)
Highly recommend. Hope to visit again to relax and unplug from the fast pace of life. Thank you!!
Thanks very much for the comments, especially those relating to Lexington, travel, directions, etc. We receive a lot of inquiries about this during graduation season and other family events at VMI and Washington & Lee. We appreciate your post about how well this works out despite the bit of a drive.... but what a lovely drive it is! We really appreciate your notes that will benefit and inform future guests.
Sylvan Keep was even better than described! First of all - Heather and Scott were fantastic. They are excellent communicators and went above and beyond in giving information and options to make our stay a 5-star experience. We enjoyed sitting outside, listening to the creek, grilling out, listening to albums, watching movies - and being without internet!! We lost count how many times one of us said - "I can google that, or I can check the weather, etc." - but then remembered we could google nothing and we didn't get caught up on our mobile phones! Refreshing! We enjoyed nice meals inside at the table - had everything we needed in the kitchen, and we can't wait to come back and experience Sylvan Keep in the fall. Great memories we made indeed! Thank you Scott and Heather!
Luxury Wilderness Escape
I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect way to escape. Sylvan Keep is welcoming and has all of the comforts of home and then some. Pulling up in the drive you’re immediately impressed by the Keep’s rolling forest with a mature forest and whimsical botanical gardens.
The house is clean and open, fully stocked with anything you could ever want. Leave it all at home and bring your clothes and groceries. Big fluffy towels and over the top comfort await your arrival, and a master suite with a jetted tub on the ground floor off the kitchen is a plus. No matter what room your choose you have beautiful views all around.
We woke to the sound of nature outside our bedroom window and were able to step right outdoors with our coffee and our dog, Olivia, to enjoy mikes of trails along the creek and National Forestland. The area is peppered with hiking trails and vistas, including our favorite Doubthat State Park close by.
The people in town are as nice as can be and I didn’t miss the shopping/strip malls and stoplight traffic of home one bit. As birders and outdoor enthusiasts Sylvan Keep and the surrounding area are perfect in so many ways. We cannot wait to return!!
Thank you for generously sharing your beautiful home, Heather and Scott!!
We are so glad Sylvan Keep was perfect for your needs! Thank you for the specific comments on things you enjoyed most. We think the hiking trails right outside the front door are a big bonus too. You were certainly perfect guests and we look forward to having you again soon!
Perfect Place for Our New Year's Getaway
This cabin was pretty much perfect for a unique, beautiful, and quiet place for our family to celebrate New Year's in the mountains of Virginia. There was no need for us to go anywhere for three and half days, as this property had everything we were looking for and more. From the feeling of seclusion and privacy in the mountains, to the combination of modern appliances and fixtures in a rustic, chinked cabin, to the babbling creek outside the front door, to the hiking trails through an open forest, to the unique stone fireplace (and Christmas tree) in the great room, to the many comfortable lounging chairs throughout, to the wide, covered porches, to the unexpected chocolates on the pillows--this place had it all. I think our dog has been depressed ever since we left. It was also nice NOT to have cell service here, which allowed us to unplug for a while, recharge our batteries, read some books, and have some extended family time through MANY games of cards at the dining room table, lots of eating and laughing together, and a movie, football game, and the New Year's Eve ball drop on the flat screen TV in the loft. We will definitely look to go back sometime. Thanks Scott and Heather. Your warm hospitality, good communication, and clear desire for us to enjoy your property were much appreciated.
Sincerely, Eric and Karol Edwards and Family
Thank you Eric and Karol! We loved having you, and we are so glad you enjoyed Sylvan Keep. I appreciated the excellent communication and your sense of humor. (My dog gets depressed when it's time to leave too!) It's wonderful to hear that your New Year's was everything you wanted, and it's always heartwarming to hear how disconnecting from cell phones and internet leads to such human re-connecting. We look forward to your return whenever you need a little Sylvan Keep magic to recharge and refresh! Have a fabulous 2019!
Tranquil Beauty In The Forest
If you are looking for an undisturbed rest, surrounded by natural beauty but with all the comforts you could possibly want or need, this is the place for you. Sylvan Keep is well off of the Interstate, tucked away where all you can see is the forest, and all you can hear is the babbling brook that runs alongside the house. With no internet or cell phone service, we were able to have a real family Christmas, where we all talked to each other, played games, and hiked in the woods.
The house features true log cabin construction, with gorgeous wood floors, an inviting stone fireplace and chimney, and the kind of quality furniture you would choose for your own home. The living room flows into the dining area, which is open to the well-appointed kitchen. There are a few private refuges available if you need them - a den on the first floor, and a loft area with large screen TV. The master suite on the first floor gave us plenty of privacy for sleep and getting dressed, and the huge upstairs bedroom shares the other full bath with a third bedroom.
When the owners say not to bring much with you because it's already there, they aren't exaggerating. The kitchen was well-stocked with as many staples and spices as I have at home, and there is no shortage of paper products, trash bags, dinnerware (2 full sets of matching stoneware!), flatware, pots and pans, cooking tools, appliances, etc. Just bring a few groceries with you for meals, and you're all set. The owners were even thoughtful enough to invite us to enjoy some of the wine they had on hand.
Since we were there for Christmas, we were thrilled to see a fully decorated and lighted 12-foot tree in the living room, plus lots of festive lights and decorations around the house. We lingered for hours on Christmas morning, enjoying this great place to exchange gifts, and listening to some of the holiday CDs they had on hand. At other times of the year, you can choose from their vast collection of music and movies to fill your time.
Sylvan Keep is adjacent to over 100,000 acres of national forest, so there is plenty of opportunity to hike and explore. We also took a few days to get in the car and visit just a few of the beautiful sights that were possible to do in a day trip. We visited the awe-inspiring Natural Bridge, and Thomas Jefferson's Monticello home, both within easy driving distance.
This is a beautiful home that I would be proud to own, and Scott and Heather are fantastic hosts.
Thank you for so many specifics about things you enjoyed! This helps us constantly refine and improve the experience for all our guests. It's also really great to hear when specific efforts like the Christmas tree and the decorations hit the spot. We are so happy you chose Sylvan Keep for Christmas 2018, and we hope you'll come back soon. You were truly excellent guests, and a joy to have. Best wishes for a wonderful 2019!
