Found on the north side of Etna, Casa Lavica is a rural house with lava stonewalls, living, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a panoramic view that stretches from the inland Sicilian landscape to the heights of the volcano’s craters. Follow a country road, prepare yourself for a peaceful and relaxing time and arrive to this black lava stone house, which color sharply contrasts the bright green of the wild Sicilian vegetation. You will be amidst antique lava flows and prestigious vineyards, such us those of Verzella & Pietramarina produced by renowned wineries like Benanti, Firriato and Terre Nere. Not far from the house a small vintage train passes three times a day around the Etna… certainly an original way of discovering the highest volcano of Europe!
Casa Lavica is a perfect gateway, shops and restaurants are at a short drive and they easily combine with day trips to the medieval villages of the Etna: Randazzo, Castiglione and Francavilla di Sicilia. No tourist traps!
The delightful gorge 'Gole d'Alcantara’, Taormina and Giardini Naxos (with sandy beaches) distance about a 30 min. drive (30 km).
Thanks to the presence of a fireplace and central heating, Casa Lavica lends itself to a cosy winter stay. Did you know that you could ski on the Etna? The closest ski-facilities are in Piano Provenzano (Linguaglossa), only 7 km away!
We have been with Homeaway since 2006, proposing houses that are able to unfold Sicily's colours and charm at best.
Houses with quality furnishing in unique locations, with incredible views or with a pool, always accurately selected in order to satisfy our main wish: to see you falling in love with Sicily just like we did.
We provide you with transparent information and true pictures. What you see is exactly what you get. We will advise you as much as we can about travel info, transfers and car rental.
Dinners in villas and other extra services can also be arranged. Finally, our prices are final rates! There are no hidden additional costs. We are flexible with your arrivals and departures and if you need a late check-in this is usually possible.
We had wonderful times at 'Casa Lavica', probably one of our favourite family holidays so far. In traditional Sicilian style, yet also tastefully renovated, the house has a unique, peaceful atmosphere which immediately helps you to unwind. Even on the hottest day, the thick stone walls and tiled floors offer a cool retreat and a good sleep at night. 'Casa Lavica' is well maintained and clean. We felt it was well-equipped for our needs and online description of the facilities was accurate. The owner Giuseppe is very welcoming indeed, respectful, approachable and willing to support guests with any queries. We much appreciated being able to walk on the beautiful land around the property and also enjoyed use of the bbq area. Some of our favourite days out included : exploring the mountainous areas around Mount Etna, visiting Castiglione and many other picturesque villages and towns, the coast around Taormina, going to Alcantara gorge and swimming in the river. We ate out a couple of times, but also enjoyed the taste (and reasonable price!) of local foods and Etna wines. Giuseppe treated us to lovely bread, his own honey, apricot jam, lemons, plums. We would certainly consider returning to Casa Lavica in future and would recommend to family and friends, especially to those who share our interest in Nature and being outdoors. All in all, we had a most enjoyable, memorable holiday.
Set in a beautiful location with beautiful views and Etna puffing up smoke to the south. A pleasant old house with good accommodation and comfortable beds. Kitchen equipment was fine for our needs. Approached by a narrow bumpy lane crossing the narrow gauge railway you certainly are well away from the madding crowd. The owner was helpful and informative and his recommendations useful. Lack of wifi may be a problem for some but this cottage is essentially an escape from the modern world.
The views and surrounding areas are lovely. Regarding the property itself, there are a few suggestions and tips we would offer. First, the property is quite remote and NOT easy to find. There should be more specific markers/indicators and directions provided to the renters. Secondly, the last stretch of road is very rocky and difficult to navigate; it would be helpful to advise renters so that they can bring a suitable vehicle. Finally, while we understood the property was rustic (and had no problem with that), it would be helpful to have a few basic amenities like bath soap, clothes line, etc. Also, the description indicated that there was a washing machine but it turned out not to be the case. That said, we enjoyed our stay very much but would likely not recommend it.
We have just returned from a two week stay. If you want complete tranquility in the midst of real Sicilian countryside in a first class property then we have no hesitation in recommending Giuseppe's restored farmhouse.
We are a bit choosy but we could not fault this in any way - very clean, lovely furnishings in keeping with the age of the house, all necessary equipment (and no TV!) and fantastic long distance views in all directions including Etna. We were lucky with temperatures upto 30C but inside the house it was very cool due to the thick walls.
Giuseppe is rightly very proud of his house and that it is in the traditional style in a very rural area. It is surrounded by small vineyards and fields with the main road 1 mile away down little lanes so there is no noise apart from the little single coach train that passes 300 yards away 3 times a day! We saw lots of wildlife and visited some of the local villages and towns which still serve the locals and are not directed at tourists so it really is Sicily. Castiglione di Sicilia in particular is very original.
Supermarkets are not far away if the village shops in the area don't have what you want and there are various restaurants and pizzerias around the area - Giuseppe will recommend which!
As you might gather we really enjoyed our 2 weeks and may well be going back.
Had a fabulous 5 day stay. Giuseppe, the friendly owner showed us his house and gave advice where to go shopping. The location is calm and tranquil with Mount Etna providing the entertainment, visible lava plumes at night. A car is essential to reach the house. As keen cyclists the area provided ample hills and wonderful quiet country roads with Mount Etna the big challenge. As other guest we could not access the internet despite having a USB to mini USB converter.
We spend a very nice week in Casa lavica. Giuseppe was ready to show us the rooms when we arrived in Passopisciara. The house was really clean. You enjoy very beautyfol sight to Etna.It is a calm place.
During our stay, the internet-connection did not work.
Passopisciaro is a nice place; you can make hikes (you need a car), e.g. to Roca di Novara, to the "Parco Naturale dei Nebrodi" and to several hikes around the Etna.
We can really recommend this property!
Casa Lavica is located at 700 metres above the sea level, on the North side of Mount Etna where one of the best red wines of Sicily is produced. Several prestigious vineyards can be found in the surroundings of the house as well as wine resorts where you can enjoy a wine tasting. The slopes of the Etna are very fertile soils and grapes are not the only quality product of this area. You can easily find fragrant olive oil, biological honey, and by driving 30 minutes away, the famous pistachios of Bronte.
Casa Lavica is definitely an excellent base from which to explore the eastern part of Sicily.
At a short drive the villages of Etna, such as Randazzo, Castiglione and Francavilla di Sicilia, which are famous for their ancient lava flows, the architecture of their seventeenth century churches, their delicious local produce and their Norman castles. The sea, the sandy beaches of Giardini Naxos and the beautiful town of Taormina are at only 30 minutes by car.
In summer Casa Lavica is a fresh and peaceful retreat, in winter is a cosy place where to return after skiing on the Etna. The closest ski-facilities are in Piano Provenzano (Linguaglossa), but can also be found at Rifugio Sapienza (Nicolosi).
