Overview

About the property

Bedarra Beachcombers is one of only 7 private homes situated on Bedarra Island. It is the perfect escape for people looking for the alternative to crowded holiday destinations. Enjoy the beautiful sandy beach on Dorilla Bay. Laze on the beach with a good book, snorkel in the beautiful clear waters, throw in a fishing line, or for the more energetic, canoe around the island (when the weather permits). This is the place to do as much or as little as you feel like. Unwind and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Power and Water

The property is run solely on solar power, and our water comes from the natural spring on the island or from our rain water tanks. It is great water and safe to drink.

Waste

Guests to pack all waste in sturdy garbage bags for removal from the island. Disposal of garbage is included in your water taxi fare.

Accommodation and Supplies

The property consists of 3 seperate pavillions, set among the granite boulders and

tropical plants, with views to Dunk Island and the Family Group of Islands

The main house has a fully equipped kitchen (including ice maker fridge),

large lounge and dining area, plus a seperate TV lounge. There is an ipod docking station and a blu ray DVD for you to play your own music. There is a laundry and bathroom ( including an outside shower). There is also a large bar-b-que and a full size wood pizza oven.

There is one king size bedroom pavillion, it has its own ensuite, big balcony, small fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, TV and blue ray DVD player. The second pavillion is queen size, has it own ensuite and a large balcony.

There are no shops on Bedarra so you will have to buy your supplies to take with you on

the boat. This can be done at Woolworths in Mission Beach, or before you leave Cairns or Townsville. The house is stocked with your every day needs eg salt ,pepper, tea, sauces, coffee, cooking oil, cling wrap, alfoil, garbage bags, toilet rolls, washing up liquid, washing powder. It is advisable to bring any special coffee or tea that you may drink.

Caretakers live on the island and are available if an emergency arises.

Getting to Bedarra Island

Bedarra Island is located approximately six kilometers off the coast of Mission

Beach, which is a 2 hour drive south of Cairns (Sugarland Car Rental offer a one way

hire) and 3 1/2 hour drive north of Townsville. Mission Beach Charters run

a water taxi service to the island. (they also do 1/2 day and 1day charters) As you will be stepping off onto the beach at Bedarra it is advisable to wear footwear that is easily removed.

Arrival and Departure

On arrival you will be met by the house manager who will convey you, your luggage and your groceries to the house and provide an orientation tour of the house and the island.

On your departure they will assist you with your luggage and waste down to the water taxi.

Mobile Phone and internet

Telstra Mobile phones work very well at the property- some others have difficulty.

WAKING UP IN PARADISE

  • 5 of 5

We will never forget our stay at Beachcombers. It was the most magical and magnificent honeymoon destination we could have imagined! We brought our 5 yr old boy with us, there was plenty for him to do, and the house worked really well for a family, as well as being an ideal romantic retreat once the sun went down. I got space while hubby took the kid kyaking and fishing and I read a novel for the first time in 5 years! Beachcombers is spread out over 3 separate pavilions which was slightly challenging at first (but good for our calves and our fitness!). Once we worked out where we wanted to spend most of our time (best view, easiest to get to) we made it work really well....the best view being from the middle pavilion verandah where we ate our meals most night, and experienced a moonrise, another first for me. The kitchen was extremely well appointed and workable and we wanted for nothing. It being a remote island you will have to self cater - we purchased all of our supplies from Inisfail Coles - living on barbeques and salads and it was easy and simple living. When you arrive on Bedarra you are met by the caretaker (in this case Neil) who brings you and all of your supplies up to the house. Having a caretaker (and general island go-to guy) there was a huge part of things working like clockwork. Neil was invisible yet we knew if we called his name or needed him he would be there...amazing! Every morning after breakfast, and then again after lunch, we would walk through the rain forest down to the back beach, sit under the coconut palms and wade in the beautiful water. The walk takes about 6 minutes and on that beach I think we encountered about 4 people over a week. You can see the resort across the way, and you kind of know you are not alone, but it simply feels like this island is yours, and that feeling is priceless. Time stood still for us on Bedarra. Our week long trip felt more like a month. We hold the place dear in our hearts and will be back again, as many times as we are able. Another challenge for me was the rocky trip across the water from Mission Beach during Cyclone season. I am not a big fan of being on a boat as it is, it was choppy and pretty full on. Completely worth it however! The trip back once the weather got calmer was a joy. I highly recommend this home to anyone who wants a beautiful, workable and comfortable space in which to reconnect with themselves, their family and this beautiful land we call home
