Really nice place to stay. Will definitely be bringing my family back.
Labor Day weekend 2017
While having read previous reviews, I took a chance on this property because I was assured by the new property manager that all previous negative reviews would be addressed and the property would be thoroughly cleaned. Also, I needed to have a home that could accommodate 10 and have boat access. Once again, the manager assured me the boat dock was accessible and a boat launch was nearby.
The day before our Friday arrival, I received a message that the boat dock was only usable for kayaks, etc. due to the shallow water and rocks in the river. That updated information changed what was advertised and what we paid a high fee to acquire.
As we were en route to the property on Friday, we received a message the hot tub was not functioning and would be repaired on Saturday. Upon arrival we were greeted by a filthy exterior, all concrete slabs covered in dirt and leaves, all wooden chairs and benches covered in spider webs, all upholstered cushions mildewed, walls and windows of home filthy. The interior had been cleaned, but the old shag carpet in the bedrooms were stained and linens on beds and in bathrooms old, frayed, holy and stained. Luckily, we only had 3 adults and 1 child in our party, as only 2 bath towels were hung in each bathroom, along with an OLD greased stained kitchen cup towel (previously used for the grill) for our hand towel. No bath soap, no tissue, no dishwasher detergent, no extra kitchen garbage bags provided.
Saturday morning, my husband awoke to the kitchen being flooded by a hot water heater in the attic. Plumbers were in the house most of the day replacing both hot water heaters and the hot tub was repaired, resulting in my husband staying at the house and not joining in our family plans.
Sunday, the owner stopped by to offer an extra night or two for free, if we didn't write a review. My conscience won't allow that for future travelers who spend a lot of money and time trying to have a nice retreat for their family.
The generous rating of 2 instead of a 0 is because after all the exterior surfaces were swept (including spider webs), cushions from the loungers removed, table surfaces windexed, my granddaughter enjoyed the pool and spa, and we enjoyed the outdoor fireplace. Also, the father-in-law across the street tried his very best to make us as comfortable as possible, spending much time at the house and even breaking a lock off the closet where the extra towels were stashed. So sad for such a beautiful property!
Unfortunately, I did not get to stay even one night here. I cannot speak to the pool area as I arrived in the evening but I can state that the home had great potential but felt short in regards to upkeep, so much so we opted for the motel nearby. Sadly, it cost me an entire evening's worth expense $$$$, which is spent 6 months saving towards, to find out. They did refund me for the other 3 nights I'd booked so that was a lifesaver Very expensive lesson. Wish I hadn't been out any money, but am aware it could have been much worse. The owners are nice and responsive.
LOTS of potential; however, fell way short of expectations
I rarely write reviews, however, I felt obligated to review this property for others. Prior to our stay, we read tons of reviews for several properties and fell in love with this one. We, and another family, spent a week in this beautifully represented property at the end of June. Apparently this is when the property owner's step dad, grounds keeper, was out of town. Which explains the problems we encountered during our stay. We arrived and walked into a house that appeared to be slightly cleaned. There was a bag of trash on the kitchen table and mop water still in the kitchen sink. There was also old popcorn in the popcorn machine that had been left for us to clean. The owner arrived to introduce herself and to replace the toilet seat in the play room bathroom. She put the new toilet seat on and informed us that it was the wrong size but that our kids could still use it. The toilet seat wouldn't even go up for the boys to be able to use the bathroom. Therefore, it was out of order the entire week. My 4 year old came out of the playroom holding an Old Spice Men's deodorant. I asked him where he got it from and he told me he got it out of the toys in the playroom. The pool appeared to need a cleaning and she informed us that the cleaning crew comes on Wednesday. They never did. By the end of the week, the pool was stagnant and green. There was a huge beautiful bird cage located by the pool. On Tuesday morning, we noticed a dead bird at the bottom of the cage. I texted her the inform her of this and she apologized and said she would be over to clean it out. By Friday, it was still at the bottom of the cage and had a terrible odor. The outdoor cabana is not useable as it appears to still be under construction. There was no a/c in the cabana and a king size bed that hung from the ceiling outside that appeared to have old sheets and uninviting. Prior to using the BBQ pit, we had to clean it thoroughly as it appeared to not have been cleaned in a very long time. To top our vacation off, the main refrigerator in the kitchen went out on Friday, our last day. We woke up to all of our food in the fridge being warm. I texted the owner to let her know, and she stated that there are 2 refrigerators. We knew that but with a group of 9, the other refrigerator was already occupied with lots of items as well. Therefore, we ended up throwing a lot of our food away. Overall, our time here wasn't pleasant due to extreme neglect.
A retreat with great potential
What a fascinating enclave! The owners have really created a place with great interesting features. Our family enjoyed the huge charcoal cooker and grilled great steaks. The house had a supply of starter fluid and lots of charcoal briquettes which was very nice and convenient. We had fun sitting by an open fire in the huge fireplace behind the pool one night. And the house slept our 9 family members comfortably. Unfortunately, our visit came during a time of disrepair. The owner's father lives across the street and I assume had provided maintenance, but he is out for awhile, and the owner is at a loss to find good maintenance help. The air conditioner in the cabaña is down, making it an oven and unusable. Also a circuit breaker is broken there, so the appliances in it won't work, but that was irrelevant with the interior heat. Most critical, the pool circulation motor was broken so the pool was stagnant. The owner was most apologetic and discounted our stay because of it. The house is in desperate need of a deep cleaning, like moving the couches and cleaning under them, as well as the oven, ventahood and carpets. I know it's a lakehouse, but it could be so much nicer. Beware the description of four bathrooms. One is a half bath outside by the pool, so not really usable for the bedrooms if you wanted a bath for each bedroom. And don't count on using the hanging kingsize bed by the cabaña for sleeping unless you bring a mosquito net. It's outside on the patio. Hopefully the owner will add a fresh set of wine glasses and coffee cups. There were only five wine glasses and four coffee cups of quite a mismatched variety. When these issues have been remedied, I would comfortably grant more stars to this facility.
Would definitely stay there again!
