Our restored 200-year-old house in the village of Parres de Llanes has everything you need for a relaxing self-catering holiday, including a safe garden for the kids and a ground-floor bedroom and bathroom for less lively members of the family. In a quiet spot at the edge of the village of Parres, you'll be woken gently by cow-bells and can enjoy an unhurried breakfast on the south-facing covered terrace while deciding your plans for the day. The house is just 4 km from the delightful seaside town of Llanes and about the same distance from the nearest motorway junction, so it's easy to hit the road for day trips. And don't worry about having to cook every evening - the village has a friendly bar and a good, reasonably-priced restaurant.
Beaches: The beaches in Asturias are among the most lovely in Spain (according to both professionals and the owners' many years of sampling!). We provide 8 beach chairs, beach towels, an umbrella, 7 body-boards and picnic utensils. In short, everything you need for a family beach day except the food and drink. Our welcome pack, sent upon request, provides our personal opinion of which beaches to explore during your stay - you have a choice of about 6 within a 20-minute drive.
We've just returned from this property and I have to say it was fabulous. The owners are so helpful and they provided everything we needed, from beach accessories to advice on where to go and what to see in the area. The location is top class - scenic beaches practically on your doorstep. I can't say enough - we had a great time and will definitely be going back. I'd definitely recommend this property to my friends.
Beautiful, large home in a peaceful, tranquil location. Wonderful sightseeing and shopping opportunities within a short drive. Quiet neighborhood with Cow bells the only noise you will hear! Quiet cup of tea on the porch, large noisy dinners in the kitchen, private bedrooms for sleeping. Absolutely perfect.
The positive aspects of the house are that it is in a superb location and the patio and BBQ are a real bonus. The kitchen is well equipped with good crockery and cutlery. The kitchen and patio table are huge and very useful. The downstairs bedroom is good and the electrical equipment in the lounge is acceptable. The cleaner was very good, and helpful, as well as very efficient.
However, in general we were extremely disappointed with the house itself. The hot water, or lack of it, was a severe problem. In the morning when we had six people to get ready there was not enough hot water to have a 1 minute shower each and do the breakfast washing up. We had to boil kettles of water for some of us to wash in the morning and for the washing up. That is not acceptable especially as it is supposed to cater for up to ten people. The electrics were poor and you could not put a load of washing in the dryer and run the next load in the washing machine as it tripped the fuse. Tiles were broken and cracked on the stairs and the ones on the landing creaked under foot. In the double bedroom on the first floor there was peeling paint and damp patched on the ceiling. The third floor bedroom was not really suited to that use. No curtains, or blinds, on the windows.
The shower head holder was broken in the downstairs bathroom. In the end we mended it with sticky tape that held out for two weeks. There was no extraction in the downstairs and upstairs bathrooms and they were hot and smelly (particularly upstairs a fully enclosed room with no extraction or windows). Outside the garden was overgrown , the pots were full of weeds and a drain leaked onto the drive. The grass was cut on the last morning we were there. The BBQ had not been properly cleaned and the tray under it was so full of dropped food etc. that it caught fire.
To conclude the house is tired and unloved. It needs a total refurbishment to bring it up to date and usable as a holiday house. In our opinion it is not suitable to be used as a holiday residence.
We have been renting properties in Spain for over 20 years and have never had such a bad experience.
We stayed at Casa Maestro in June 2010, 10 people aged 6-80 all having a wonderful time. As others have remarked, the house is very well equipped even when packed to the rafters. We had mainly sunny days so made good use of the garden and BBQ. The scenery is stunning, watching the sun set on the mountain was amazing.
We had a wonderful day out to the zoo cum safari park near Santander and trips to various villages and beaches along the coast. Llanes, the nearest town, has a fantastic beach. My 2 children loved body boarding and exploring the caves and rockpools when the tide was out.
We came across on the ferry and would suggest upgrading to Commodore class which we did on our return (comfy double beds rather than the very hard bunks of standard class). The Commodore cabins also have TVs and DVDs which are useful for entertaining little ones, and you can pre-book dinner at the restaurant which gets very busy otherwise.
My only suggestions for improvement would be to upgrade the bathroom in the old part of the house and fit blinds or curtains to the velux windows and in the room with the balcony.
We noticed a little used pool in the hotel opposite, may be worth asking the owners if guests could use for a small fee?
We stayed here in July/Aug 2009 (two families, total 9 people) and had a really good time. The house was better furnished than others we have stayed in and did feel, as the owners say, more like a home than a 'holiday house'. Bit of a disparity in size of double bedrooms, with one very large one and two less so. Most of the appliances, plates, cutlery etc were obviously quite new which again made a change from some places we have stayed. A few more oven tins/dishes would have been useful but we managed OK particularly because one of the biggest pluses was the large outdoor table and gas barbecue (I'm a convert - switch it on and five minutes later the food is cooking, really handy when your back late and feeding 9). We made a lot of use of the barbie, eating lots of the seafood that is so much cheaper here than in the UK. It was very relaxing just sitting there with a glass of wine looking up at the mountains (if you like wines other than Spanish then grab a few on the ferry because the local supermarkets are not huge and sell only Spanish wine). The garden is small and sloping though, so not really suitable for boisterous play. The hot water supply for the shower, which the owners thought might be a problem for larger groups, was fine for us, it really wasn't an issue. Coming from the UK on the ferry it was great that the owners were able to offer a discount on the ferry, which really did make the property excellent value for two families sharing. Re the area, the village is very quiet, just the bar and a restaurant on the edge of the village. Rather incredibly we didn't make it to the bar once in 2 weeks, basically because after a hard day on the beach the outdoor table and view was just too inviting. On one side of the village is the coastal strip with lots of good beaches nearby (the body boards were great) and on the other side is a great wall of mountain. There is a spectacular drive over the top if you go out the village past the restaurant. We had a few days of mist and on one day decided to take a long drive to Leon (circa 3 hours each way). If you fancy doing this on a drizzly day you may have the same experience we did: going through a Magic Road Tunnel, entering in Asturian rain and 15 degrees and coming out in Leon province 5 minutes later into 25 degree blue sky and sun. Spectacular, never experienced such a dramatic weather change before! All in all, great area, great house.
"This place is absolutely stunning! The views are immaculate and the area is just so quaint. The house itself is spacious and has a wonderful backyard with fruit trees galore. The design of the house is original and enjoyable. Take a tour to the beautiful rooftop balcony as you sip on some regional cider, provided in house by the owner and earlier renters.
The town surrounding the area is just as quaint with a little/lot of local flair, a local pizza place and chesse shop as well as a cider house on the hill. It's got everything someone would be looking for to just get away from it all. But be mindful you really are away from it all, so if you are looking for a bustling night life and a hoppin' shopping area you aren't going to find it here, (although Llanes isn't too far away.)
My only real complaint with the place, and this is going to be a problem anywhere in the area, is the mosquitoes. Be sure to use the nifty gadgets provided to keep them away. Cheers.
Nearby Llanes is a medieval fishing port with a pedestrianised old town, castle ramparts, excellent restaurants, lively cider-houses, plentiful shops and two town beaches. All along this part of the coast are unspoilt sandy coves and charming small towns. Also within a few minutes' drive are a spectacular cliff-top golf course and a less challenging pitch and putt. The more adventurous can head inland to the magnificent Picos de Europa national park for canoeing and hiking. Gijon, Oviedo and Santander are all about one hour by car - or a bit longer by the FEVE narrow-gauge railway.
The The Picos de Europa national park Nature Reserve with its historical Covadonga Lakes is also close by.
