Newcastle House was built in 1926 and extensively renovated during 2010-2015.
The house is located on Newcastle Avenue, adjacent to the Nanaimo Yacht Club and facing beautiful Newcastle Island Provincial Park and vibrant Nanaimo Harbour. Immediately in front of the house, along the harbour side, is a leisurely walkway which takes the stroller from the yacht club to the downtown and The Bastion/Marina area. On the way is an oceanside park with a crabbing pier and jetty for the mini ferry to Newcastle Island - all within a 10 minute walk from The House!
The house itself is certainly unique with original hand-made mouldings and balustrades, comfortably appointed living and dining rooms with views of the harbour and beyond. It has three decks, a garage that has been converted to a gamesroom with wall-mounted flatscreen tv, regulation pool/billiard and ping pong tables. The back deck has a BBQ, shaded dining set, and a hot tub overlooking a beautiful garden anchored by a magnolia tree which is lit up nightly by garden lights from dusk till midnight. There are four comfortable bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, one of which is an ensuite. The tastefully decorated and easy-to-enjoy dining room and living room, both of which look over the harbour and islands, are ideal for entertaining.
One of the attractions of Newcastle House is its location, within walking or biking distance to downtown and the harbour front and a short drive to several shopping centres. With Nanaimo as a base, sightseeing destinations like Chemainus and the wine country around Duncan to the south, even Victoria, and Tofino and Campbell River to the north can be made as one day trips.
Catering is also possible through the culinary school of Vancouver Island University (previously known as Malaspina College) which over the years has built a very credible name for itself.

An extremely nice home with a great location .
repeating myself the home was great with the location and view of the Harbour exceptional. Our extended family enjoyed the home for its spaciousness and overall brightness. Would recommend to others if I had one observation and I could have overlooked this matter --would be to extend rental prices in Canadian as well as American dollars
Enjoyed very much
Great property spacious with fun games room
Beautiful home, amazing experience
Everything about our stay was wonderful. We were met by a phenomenal site manager who welcomed us with local treats and necessities and made us feel completely relaxed and at home. The house itself was even more lovely than I expected from the listing, with many more features and perks. We really had no plans for what we were going to do in the area and the site manager left a long list of all the local favourites. Everything we hit up from the list was even better than anticipated. The location of the house is perfect for exploring Nanaimo itself, including the charming Newcastle Island, as well as the wonderful towns and beaches in the area. I didn't know what to expect from a stay in Nanaimo but now I am recommending it to others as a great base location, and would suggest anyone looking for a lovely place to stay to stay in this home!
The best home away from home!
The New Castle house is by far our best experience with a vacation rental. The house was beautiful, clean and equipped with every amenity you could ever need.
The location is perfect, with just a short walk away from a beautiful park for the kids, shops, and the ferry rides across to New Castle Island for a fun adventure. The house also has a great front porch, where we enjoyed just sitting with our morning coffee or evening glass of wine looking out at the harbour, watching the sail boats and trying to spot seals.
There is also a great games room (garage converted) with ping pong table and pool table where we had so much fun.
I could go on and on - the perfect vacation , we will definitely be going back!
Amazing location and first class home! Highly recommend.
Gracious host and wonderful amenities. Special home and so close to the water. Look forward to our next visit!
Good location where you can walk to beach, restaurants and parks. Home is nice and comfortable.
Incorporated in 1874, Nanaimo has a population of about 85,000. It's centrepiece, the old Hudson's Bay Fort, was built in 1853 and today anchors the harbour front area which has restaurants, two marinas, and shops, all with beautiful vistas of the two islands which help form the harbour. The fort's cannon is fired, with a musical backdrop of the pipes being played, at noon-time daily. The downtown is really an extension of this area and very convenient for browsing, coffee stops, lunching, enjoying a micro-brew, and so on. In summer, countless yachts and sailboats stop by at Nanaimo, many of which anchor a week and dot the harbour.
Nanaimo is connected to the mainland by two BC Ferries terminals; by seaplanes from both downtown Vancouver and Vancouver's international airport area; by scheduled land flights to Nanaimo's own international airport located about 15 minutes south of the city; and highway travel from Victoria.
It has several large shoppping centres within a 10 minute drive from Newcastle House (one of which is less than 5 minutes drive away and has a walk-in medical clinic). Fresh seafood, with dungeness crab, spot prawns, and halibut being especially prized, is easily available as is all that is necessary for barbeques.
Nanaimo has a number of restaurants, several of which are located downtown and in the nearby Old Quarter, and others scattered within 10 minutes' drive. Western Canada-famous White Spot is only a 3-4 minute walk away from The House!
Nanaimo has its very own university, Vancouver Island University, and within is the Culinary Institute which has over the years made itself a very credible international reputation. Catering can be arranged with them. The city also has a large ice arena and aquatic centre, one adjacent to the other; Bowen Park, with its very own waterfall and lovely forest trails,as well as an outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts, is situated right in the middle of the city and very close by to The House.
Additionally, the city offers a myriad of activities. A popular natural-setting bungee jump and zipline activity centre is not far away as well as river, lake, and ocean swimming holes offering a refreshing dip. The Nanaimo Golf Club is a few minutes away from The House by car and there are several other golf courses within driving distance. There is kayaking, canoeing, sailing, hiking, and picnicking to one's heart's content! Fishing and touring boat charters are also readily arrangeable and in the winter, there is fantastic skiing and snowboarding on nearby Mount Washington.
Nanaimo also offers one of the world's top scuba diving areas, just on the outside of the two islands circling the harbour and enhanced by a couple of artificial reefs. For intrepid hikers, the 1,019 metres-high Mount Benson provides a full day's hiking and climbing with an absolutely gorgeous view of the Georgia Strait (or Salish Sea) and beyond to the coast mountain range and a panoramic view of Mount Baker.
Last but not least, Nanaimo is a very good base from which to explore central Vancouver Island. For example, to the south the Duncan/Cowichan Valley area is now well-known for the dozen or so wineries and the availability of locally-grown foods; Chemainus with its world-famous wall murals is 20 minutes or so away and charming Victoria is an hour and a half drive that can be made into a one-day trip. To the north there are several Provincial Parks like Englishman's River and Little Qualicum as well as the Cathedral Grove Park with its giant, hundreds of years-old trees; the always popular Coombs Market with the family of goats living on its roof; the pretty seaside villages of Parksville and Qualicum; and the Horne Lake caves for the spelunking crowd; and with a little more effort even the salmon capital of the world - Campbell River, and Tofino - a surfing, beachcombing and whale-watching destination, are within reach of a day's trip.
The piece-de-resistance has to be Nanaimo's very own Newcastle Island Provincial Park - right there in front of Newcastle House. It is accessed by a small passenger-only (bicycles can be taken on board) ferry that departs every hour from a jetty a few minutes' walk away. This island, about 8 kilometres in circumference, is enjoyed by walking its many trails and swimming at its several sandy or pebble beaches. It even has its very own small lake/lagoon! It is also a popular place for camping and cycling. Newcastle Island is Mother Nature at her best and it is right there in front of you!
