Detailed Description of Property: Get away to a one of a kind oasis in the hills of Malibu. A rare wonderland 5 minutes from Leo Carillo Beach, one of Malibu's prettiest, and surrounded by miles of state park and trails. The property itself is like being in a secluded park, with the only neighbors anywhere near being the friendly, quiet property owners who live up top and are available to help you with anything you need, including fresh herbs from the garden and tips on where to go around town. One is a Malibu native, and they both have lived all over the world and speak German, French, Spanish and Italian, in addition to English. Your home is a large cottage built out of the stones from the surrounding mountainside. Enjoy the winding brick and stone paths through the grounds where you can visit 4 friendly chickens or the charming organic garden.
Cottage Amenities: It is beautiful and luxurious, equipped with a California king size bed decked in bamboo linens, a full kitchen, wireless high speed Internet, 42' flat screen TV, dvd and cd player, and a large stone two person shower. Outside, you may help yourself to lounge chairs or an outdoor eating area with gas grill.
Nearby Surroundings: The property is located in northern Malibu, which is the part of the Los Angeles coastline most protected from development. There are dozens of beaches a short drive away in addition to Leo Carillo, which is at the bottom of the hill. For example, Zuma Beach is about 10 minutes away. Nature trails are all over--a lovely one is less than a five minute walk away. The property is adjacent to Mulholland Hwy, which is a favorite for those who love to bike. We are about 15 minutes from local shopping, and within a half hour, you can be at all kinds of shops--in Malibu, Agoura Hills, among other neighboring towns. We are an approximately 45 minute drive to Santa Monica and Santa Barbara.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2011
One of us is a Malibu native and still a home girl at heart. Both of us have longed to live where we can breathe easily, grow our own food, have water from our own well, enjoy natural and architectural beauty, and still be close to our urban and family responsibilities. After years of searching, we finally got lucky.
This little house and it's surroundings are amazing! So cozy and comfortable and Diane and Mattias are the nicest people you could hope for. The eggs from their hens and freshly baked bread were such a nice touch! We plan to come back again and again! Thank you.
A lovely and roomy stone cottage in north Malibu. Located up in the hills 3 miles off the PCH with no cell service but free wi-fi. Two space heaters were plenty to keep the cottage warm. Big TV with service that sometimes lost connection, but there are a lot of movie DVDs provided as a backup. Nice linens and shampoo, conditioner, small bar soap, hair dryer, dish soap, and plenty of kitchen supplies. Cons: The water pressure in the bathroom is REALLY low - the sink and shower trickle on warm/hot and it took a long time for the water to heat up. We brought it up to the owners during the stay but there wasn't anything they could do, so they reimbursed us $100 for the inconvenience. The left side of the king bed obviously has been slept on much more than the right and has a deep hole - the right side was much more comfortable so we switched off each night. Lastly, there is no curtain on one of the windows in the bathroom. It looks up directly to the main house from the sink, and onto the driveway from the shower, so we hung a towel up for added privacy. It's a lovely property and we really enjoyed our stay despite the minor issues.
We so loved our stay at this cute cottage. My husband, 14 yo daughter and 11yo son enjoyed our time especially quiet mornings while waiting for our granddaughter to be born in LA. The two futon mattresses they provided for our kids worked well. My daughter asked if we could live there. Quite a compliment from a teenage girl. We were respectful of privacy to each other with only curtains for closure in the bathroom so that did not bother us. We would love to return!
This is a gorgeous property. The owners are wonderful people and with it's location slightly off the beat 'n track from the Malibu bustle this place is the perfect retreat to tank up on some natural magic
A lovely property with lovely owners. We spent July 4th weekend here and couldn't have picked a better spot. We hope to be back soon and would definitely recommend this property.
I want to start by stating that we had a great time in the cottage. It is both rustic and beautiful, I love how the rocks show up in the inside and how the whole bathroom is carved directly into the rock. It was very clean on our arrival and Mattias and Diane were very friendly and welcoming.
The grill and the table outside are great addition to the cottage. Going to bed hearing the frog singing truly enhance the "vacation spirit".
No AC but the night are chilly in Malibu and with the windows open it was very comfortable inside the cottage.
The beach 5 min down the cottage is gorgeous as all the beaches nearby!
It hurt me to give only three stars, but we had no hot water and no water pressure altogether during our stay. We mentioned that once to Diane after our arrival, we had normal water for 24 hrs and then nothing again. This was particularly annoying especially with two young children.
Few more remarks, that I feel should be mentioned for information:
- Malibu is not far from LA, but traffic is very dense at anytime during day or night. If you plan most of your time in LA, this may not be the best place to stay.
- There is complimentary WiFi in the cottage, but we did not get any cell phone coverage.
- There is no door for the bathroom, just curtains. It is definitely an assumed choice from the owner and I agree that it looks amazing but you basically get no privacy in the toilet.
- It would be nice to have a source of water outside of the cottage to rinse "sandy feet" before getting in.
Other Activities: hiking, wine tasting, farmer's markets
