Overview

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 3-5)

The apartment is the third floor of a typical DC row house which was built in 1904. The neighborhood is a lovely mix of beautiful homes with gorgeous gardens and a great restaurant district. The apartment itself is charming, clean and well maintained with some typical period details. There are hard wood floors throughout and a working fireplace in the bedroom. The kitchen is well equipped and there is seating and place settings for a dinner for 8. The furnishings are comfortable and chosen with an eye to the space. We try to ensure that there are age appropriate toys up there (if applicable).

The layout is typical for the period, the kitchen and recently renovated bathroom are accessed from the master bedroom. It is suitable for singles, a couple or a family with up to four children. We live in the units below, the unit above has permanent tenants.

The apartment itself is quiet because it is on a quiet street, and is on the third floor. It is bright and sunny. There are good public transportation options nearby; the metro is a short walk, buses are close and taxis are easily available. (15-20 dollars to National Airport). There is no reserved parking spot associated with the building and parking is restricted during the weekdays and can be challenging in the evenings. If you anticipate needing parking please contact us well ahead of your stay.

No smoking and no pets please.

The National Mall, White House, the Capitol and monuments are all an easy bus or metro ride or on a nice day you might consider walking. The Smithsonian (https://www.si.edu) has many fabulous museums. Entry is free. The nearest of these is the National Zoo which is a short walk from the apartment.

Other attractions:

National Gallery of Art

National Building Museum

Postal Museum

Library of Congress

Folger Shakespeare Museum

Philips collection

Woodrow Wilson’s presidential museum

Tudor Place

And many others . .

Nearby:

The apartment is in a quiet residential area. A short block away is one of DC’s nightlife areas - Adams Morgan. There are many bars and restaurants, some with live music. Within a short walk are two parks with playgrounds intended for young children. Kalorama Park also has a new play area for children up to Middle School age. The immediate area around the apartment has coffee shops, fast food outlets, convenience stores, bottle shops and two supermarkets within easy walking distance. Rock Creek Park can be accessed about half a mile from the apartment – it has many running, bicycling and hiking trails, historic sites and a Horse Center offering horse rides. There is a 23 mile loop trail for cycling, parts of which follow the historic C&O Canal towpath.

The Red Line Metro station Woodley Park/National Zoo is half a mile from the apartment, offering easy access to the city and attractions. Bus stops with many useful bus routes for downtown access are on the block. The city has made public transport access easy with usable smartphone apps and websites.

Taxis are plentiful and easily available at the corner of 18th and Columbia a block away. I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes at any time, even at 5AM. Uber is Uber and has a big market share here.

More detailed notes and recommendations are in the apartment. A sampling to help with planning is below:

Classical Music:

There is a free performance every day of the year at 6 pm at the Kennedy Center. (Millenium Stage). The schedule is on their website.

The National Symphony Orchestra season starts 25 September, tickets available on the website. The “choir seats” if available are $20.00. You face the conductor and can usually read the viola music.

The Baltimore Symphony divides its season between Baltimore and the Strathmore Arts Center in Montgomery County (which is easily reached by Metro). Marin Alsop is the conductor and has regular “appearances” on NPR so you may have heard her reviews.

There is a lot of free and good music around, check the ionarts blog (http://ionarts.blogspot.com/) and DC cultural tourism.

Popular music

The 930 club has up and coming performers, (and some who up and came). Bring your ID, no matter how old you are, they will check and will not serve you alcohol.

The Black Cat on 14th St is popular and has local and indy artists. (Saint Ex is also nearby and has a downstairs nightclub)

Washington City Paper has good and complete listings. http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/

Pools

DC has many public pools that are free to DC residents and cheap for visitors. They are open weekends until the end of June then daily during the summer. https://dpr.dc.gov/page/aquatic-facilities.

Cars:

Zip Cars: Plentiful and easily available

Car2go: If you are a member in another city your membership will work here.

Car rental: Closest is Enterprise on Calvert across the bridge.

Bicycle:

By far the best way to see the monuments is by bicycle. The distances are actually pretty big when you consider going from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol building. http://www.bikethesites.com/ has 2 rental sites: one at Union Station the other on Pennsylvania Ave. They have children’s bikes.

The red bikes are Capital bike share-the most economical pricing for visitors is the 3 day pass which you can buy at the kiosk. Helmets are required for people under 16. https://www.capitalbikeshare.com/pricing

Boat.

Another fun way to see the Jefferson Memorial is by boat. There are paddleboats on the tidal basin, and you can rent canoes and kayaks at several locations. The names have changed recently, but google will help you. Most of these places also rent bicycles.

Sailboats are available across the river at the Washington Marina, metro National airport and walk south about a mile along a bike path.

Restaurants in the neighborhood:

Tail up Goat New, trendy, delicious. Recent Michelin star

Lapis Afghan food. Highly recommended. Not too expensive. Got the Michelin cheap eats nod.

Johnny’s Half Shell My current go to place. Delicious seafood

Best coffee: Tryst (18th st)

Mintwood place: trendy and tasty. They have a happy hour menu before 7 in the bar that is quite affordable. They have high tables and it is ok to bring well behaved kids.

Need something quick and cheap? Try Astor Pizza. (Columbia Rd)

Best Fries: Amsterdam Falafel shop (18th St)

Great Apartment

  • 5 of 5

My daughter & I stayed in this attractive apartment & had a great stay! The owner was very accommodating & made sure the apartment was cooled for our arrival since the weather was very hot. It is very conveniently located & we found many lovely restaurants within walking distance. The beds are comfortable & the linens good quality. The kitchen is clean & well stocked. The bathroom is also clean & nice. We would definitely stay here again.

Awesome!!!

  • 5 of 5

I love this place. This is our second time here. Since our last visit the bathroom has been completely remodeled . It looks fantastic . As always, the place is spotless, beautifully furnished with an eclectic mix of some lovely older pieces with comfortable modern things. We had a dinner party-total of 8 around the table, no problems at all. The kitchen is very well equipped, and there were basic staples provided-much appreciated. The location couldn't be better, a quiet street but right in the middle of everything, close to public transport and there were metro cards in the apartment! The owners were welcoming and very helpful. We hope to return, it was really a great trip.

Owner's Response: We don't guarantee the metro cards, but sometimes folks leave them!

We expected it to be better.

  • 3 of 5

The location is close to restaurants and the metro was an o.k. walking distance. We found two cockroaches and thought the unit would be cleaner with better furniture. For the unit's layout I think instead of two tables it would be much better to use the space where one is at for a clothes dryer in the kitchen. Trying to dry towels on a rack in the summer was difficult. Also, no way to get to the kitchen or bathroom without walking through the main bedroom. No door between the living area and main bedroom so this unit does not provide very much privacy and makes it difficult to sleep if you bring a teenager. Katy, the unit owner was responsive.

Owner's Response: Cleanliness has not been an issue please see prior reviews. We haven't seen cockroaches, we live in the building, likely those you saw were brought in with a grocery bag or similar. In any case we put traps down and have monitored the situation-no roaches. The layout is described in the property description and a floor plan is provided. It doesn't suit everyone, that is why we are clear about it. There were a dozen clean and dry spare towels in the apartment during your stay, most people seem to find the arrangement acceptable. I am sorry you did not enjoy the apartment, most do.

Great place from which to explore DC

  • 5 of 5

The kids and I had a great time. The unit had everything we needed and was located in a quiet neighborhood. Great walking distance to everything: the kids get a PE credit if they walk 50 miles in a week, and we did. Loved the history of the place with its pine floors and fireplace.
