When you like a quite place in the desert with al the comfort and with sustainable character nearby the Grand Canyon, this is the house; we - parents with 4 teenager kids - enjoyed very much!
Great place for our 7 member family, plenty of room, well appointed, clean. Due to overcast skies needed to use the generator once and it was a breeze. Place is large enough for a big family, and still feels cozy. Owner sent all info well in advance and was hyper responsive, recommend highly. Very close to Grand Canyon and private enough to get away from crowds.
Getting to the house took us a bit longer since we didn't have 4WD and encountered many ruts along the way. Once we got there, we were in for a treat! The house had everything that we needed. Normally when we vacation, we stay off the computer and television so this was a perfect fit for us. My children liked the game room and enjoyed playing checkers. They also enjoyed exploring outdoors.
We learned quickly the first night that we consumed more electricity than was available. There after, we did fine with the power. It was a good learning experience for all of us.
There are beautiful views of the sunset from the house. In the evenings, we sat on the porch and looked at the stars. I don't think I ever heard silence like I did at the house. If you get up early enough, you can sit outside on the front porch with a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise.
When we stayed, the temperatures were in the mid 80's during the day. Since we were out sightseeing at that time, we put the ceiling fans on when we got back to the house and opened up the windows. There was no need for air conditioning. There was a nice cool breeze going through the house.
We were late making plans to visit the Grand Canyon and could not find anything "on site"
I was thrilled to find this place, which is a short ~30' drive away
Pluses: beautiful and well equipped.
Very clean and neat.
Owner was available by email when needed.
The Master Bed and the Bunk (which had a large bottom mattress) was quite comfortable.
Nice location if you can't stay at the Grand canyon and/or want nicer accommodations than a typical hotel
We found the two futons (living room and guest room) to be uncomfortable,
The location was great, as noted above, but there was a bumpy 2-mi dirt road to get to the main road
We were intrigued by being "off the grid" and staying in a solar powered home.
Thankfully it had a gasoline generator because we used it every night and every morning.
This is probably due to our daily plans - we spent the entire day at the Grand Canyon each day, so we missed the peak sunshine.
But even though there was plenty of sunlight, every night when we got home, the power died within an hour
I am not sure if the problem was with the battery, or with our usage, but it was disappointing
That said, the generator worked great and we did not suffer a bit for lack of electricity.
I was just disappointed we could not be more "green"
Would I recommend this place again? Tough call. We really did find the home beautiful, but did not enjoy the dirt road, or having to use the gas generator.
If I had a choice, I would stay closer to the Grand Canyon, but if you are a procrastinator like me, you might be happier staying at a nice place like this rather than a hotel / motel.
I am giving this four stars because I was mostly happy, but there were some issues. Apart from addressing the solar issues, my only other suggestion to the owner would be to put a true Queen bed in the extra bedroom, so it could -comfortably- sleep as many as advertised.
We highly recommend this place!! It was absolutely immaculate, and the location was ideal for visiting Grand Canyon. The house is stocked with games and videos for the family, and our children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the property. They discovered fossils and wildlife, including lizards, pronghorns, and even a porcupine!! We arrived in the late afternoon and the house was a little warm, but once we opened the windows and got a breeze flowing through it was very comfortable. The power went off once during our stay, and all my husband had to do was flip a switch in the shed and it reset. Seeing how the solar power and generator were hooked up was very interesting and inspired us to look into ways to be more self-sufficient and energy conscious--not something we expected to gain an interest in while on vacation, haha! Also, when we had to make a change with the dates we booked, Roger was very easy to work with. Definitely recommend this place and it's owner!
My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay "off-the-grid." The home was wonderfully equipped with everything we needed. The five of us had no problems and did not need to run the generator. Just as other reviews have stated, the pictures on VRBO did not do the home justice. The home was very clean, and directions there were clear. I would recommend this home to family and friends. We shopped at Safeway in Williams; I had a Safeway card, so the groceries were cheaper. There's no description of the stars at night! Beautiful! If we ever visit the area again, we will definitely plan on staying here.
