Overview

About the property

Lakeside with 2 bedrooms, 1 full bath, outdoor shower, borders Stissing Mountain

Rustic cabin by Twin Island Lake, Pine Plains, NY

Sitting on quiet Lake Road and nestled in the woods, my rental built in 1950 is fashioned after a vintage lake cabin. It offers a well equipped kitchen (no dishwasher), a bath with a large claw footed tub and an outdoor hot and cold shower. There are two bedroom areas; one with a single bed and trundle, the other a double bed. The front sitting room/kitchen area has great views of the lake with an over head ceiling fan (no air conditioning) and a wood burning stove for cooler temps. The property includes Lake front with dock and canoe.

Swimming in the lake out front is possible in the Spring and Fall. But during the summer, there is an over abundance of water lilies. At that time, it is good for boating and fishing. There are 3 bodies of water connected and the next called Stissing lake is deeper and offers good swimming options at the beach and the other public entry located on hiking and swimming map which I provide.

The scenic hiking trails are around Thompson Pond, the third in the chain of lakes and up Stissing Mountain to the fire tower.

The town of Pine Plains is small and quaint New England. It offers a Historic Inn for dining, several other small eateries and a WIFI coffee shop. The food market, Pecks, is family owned and carries local produce as well as some organic.

This is an owner shared cabin; I may be there when it is not lent out and keep a permanent bureau and closet with my things.

No land line, TV, or WIFI. Good cell reception. WIFI available at the library or in town at Pine Plains Platter. There is a suitcase of board games, puzzles, cards and plenty of mystery books.

Not winterized, the cabin is closed down in October and opened again by June. Book ahead. Discounted weekly rate $850.

About Inez Foose

I am an artist (muralist and decorative painting) living in NYC.

I had the opportunity to create the mural frieze honoring past librarians in the newly built Pine Plains Library on Main Street.

Inez Foose purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Inez Foose chose New York

I acquired this cabin from it's original owner who grew up around these lakes in the summer. I was thrilled that it had never been 'upgraded'. I refurbished it while trying to keep true to a vintage 50's lake cabin. I still enjoy combing the local yard sales for items that belong to this venue.

What makes this cabin unique

Lovely view of lake from front room and also thru the interior window while laying in bed. The sunrise over the lake can be glorious.

In the spring and early summer, the frogs croaking and in the fall, geese honking serenade the otherwise quiet setting.

Perfect getaway to rest, relax, and reconnect

  • 5 of 5

This little green cabin is the perfect antidote to stressed-out city life. After a two hour car ride, I arrived with no plans or expectations and had one of the best get-away experiences ever. The cabin is rustic, unpretentious, charming, and cozy. Stepping through the front door, I instantly felt welcomed. Every inch of the cabin is a visual treasure. The lack of TV and wifi is a plus especially in this age of the non-stop news cycle. Pine Plains is a great little town that's low-key with a couple of charming stores, a wine shop, local restaurants, and a quick drive to other Hudson Valley towns such as Rhineback. I definitely plan to stay again.

The Green Cabin is eclectic and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

My finace and I sayed here for two nights and had a lovely time. The cabin is cozy and perfect for the summer. It is decorated with charm and because a partner in your vacation...conversations, artistic ideas and thoughts and immediate feeling of home. We loved the tub, the outdoor shower, the kayak. We swam at the official city beach that the cabin provides a pass to (and is very close to the cabin). We relaxed and roasted marshmallows over a fire outside. The cabin was a wonderful place for us to chat, and connect - we loved our stay.

Nice spot for quiet weekend

  • 4 of 5

Overall we had a great time staying in this cabin. The location is great, we had alot of fun out on the canoe, and the town has a public beach which was very nice. We also hiked the nearby trails which were great. I would reccomend for a relaxing weekend.

My only complaints would be,

- it's not really lakefront, there is a road between the cottage and lake

- you cannot swim in the lake, there is another lake near by that you can swim in though

- it's not secluded whatsoever, there is a neighbour very close on the back of the cabin that is also on higher ground. Not great for hanging outside or doing a campfire.

- BBQ did not have any coals left

Peaceful, Tranquil and Recharging

  • 4 of 5

If i could I would give this lake cabin a 4.5 rating, I would. The property is as advertised and we had a wonderful visit. Around every corner is another nostalgic reminder bringing back child hood memories. The outside shower is wonderful - plenty of water pressure and hot water. We enjoyed watching the baby swans and their parents in the lake. Our three year old labrador (though shy at first) had his first experience inside a boat on top of the water instead of always being in it. We explored nearby towns and hiked Drayton Grant Park at Burger Hill and enjoyed watching the beutiful sunset over the Hudson River Valley. We ate dinner in nearby Rhienbeck - a nice town with wonderful shops. A couple of notes though:-mid July in the summer can be humid and it was for us the first 24 hours. We worried about sleeping with no air conditioning but in the end it was not so bad. If you are accustomed to only AC, it might be a shock / noisy to sleep by only a small fan if required. I also came to fish and after leaving the lab behind (so as not capsize me); I had success fishing in the lake. On my second cast with a spinner bait, I landed a respectable sized Northern pike. A few casts later a large mouth base and a bit later another Pike. This was my highlight of my time at the lake cabin! I released all the fish so they are their for next time or the next visitor.

Thank you Inez for sharing this special place.

Phil, Deb & Ben (the lab).

Owner's Response: The back bed has been upgraded with an undeniably comfortable Serta mattress. I was sorry to see the "Macy's Own Brand Bedding" go. The "springs" are a permanent fixture of the 50's style as described in the listing.

Twin Island Lake is one ot three lakes next to Stissing Mountain and is good for boating and fishing. Stissing Lake is larger and deeper and good for swimming and boating with a public boat launch and recreation beach. Thompson Pond is a wildlife refuge. there are hiking trails around Thompson Pond and up Stissing Mountain to the fire Tower. The town of Pine Plains is small and quaint New England. It offers an Historic Inn for dining, several other small eateries, a WIFI coffee shop and library and good family owned market with local and organic produce.. Nearby towns, Millerton and Red Hook are larger and offer more; wineries, antique barns, and a “rail trail” in Millerton.

In Rhinebeck, The Dutchess County Fairgrounds has many events during the year.
