Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cabin in Pine Plains - Green Lake Cottage

Lakeside with 2 bedrooms, 1 full bath, outdoor shower, borders Stissing Mountain

Rustic cabin by Twin Island Lake, Pine Plains, NY

Sitting on quiet Lake Road and nestled in the woods, my rental built in 1950 is fashioned after a vintage lake cabin. It offers a fully equipped kitchen (no dishwasher), a bath with a large claw footed tub and an outdoor hot and cold shower. There are two bedroom areas; one with a single bed and trundle, the other a double bed. The front sitting room/kitchen area has great views of the lake with an over head ceiling fan (no air conditioning) and a wood burning stove for cooler temps. The property includes Lake front with dock and canoe.

There are scenic hiking trails around Thompson Pond and up Stissing Mountain to the fire tower. The town of Pine Plains is small and quaint New England. It offers a Historic Inn for dining, several other small eateries and a WIFI coffee shop. The food market, Pecks, is family owned and carries local produce as well as some organic.

This is an owner shared cabin; I may be there when it is not lent out and keep a permanent bureau and closet with my things.

No land line, TV, or WIFI. Good cell reception. WIFI available at the library or in town at Pine Plains Platter. There is a suitcase of board games, puzzles, cards and plenty of mystery books.

Not winterized, the cabin is closed down in October and opened again by June. Book ahead. Discounted weekly rate $850.

About Inez Foose

I am an artist (muralist and decorative painting) living in NYC.

I had the opportunity to create the mural frieze honoring past librarians in the newly built Pine Plains Library on Main Street.

Inez Foose purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Inez Foose chose New York

I acquired this cabin from it's original owner who grew up around these lakes in the summer. I was thrilled that it had never been 'upgraded'. I refurbished it while trying to keep true to a vintage 50's lake cabin. I still enjoy combing the local yard sales for items that belong to this venue.

What makes this cabin unique

Lovely view of lake from front room and also thru the interior window while laying in bed. The sunrise over the lake can be glorious.

In the spring and early summer, the frogs croaking and in the fall, geese honking serenade the otherwise quiet setting.

Inez does a very good job of describing her unique cottage .. Read through carefully and you will not be disappointed. It is obviously put together with loving care and deserves the same by any visitor.. A lovely interlude by the lake

Peace and Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

The beautiful cabin that is both inviting and in an amazingly quiet location was just what I needed after a difficult summer. Inez is very accommodating as I was accompanied by my furry best friend Mysti. We kayaked, fished and took long walks together with a beautiful view of the lake from the cabin. The cabin is comfortable and bathing in the claw footed tub was soothing and relaxing after kayaking and fishing. I especially love the window in the bedroom that I could watch the sunrise from the comfort of the bed. There were many wonders of nature to behold each day including Pileated Woodpeckers, Cardinals, Swans, Deer, even a Beaver Lodge. The surrounding neighbors are very friendly and added to the serenity of the area. There are a few nice places to visit in the area including Taconic State Park and a couple of wineries . The small country town of Pine Plains is nearby with an adorable supermarket and wine store with anything extra you may need to enhance your already wonderful experience.

Charming old-fashioned cottage

  • 4 of 5

This is a delightful cottage! The decor is truly "1950's" and it is charmingly cosy and quaint.

The use of the canoe and access to the lake is a big plus! The hammock and the outdoor shower are really special! Just be aware that the cottage is not actually right by the lake shore; its very close to a road and you have to cross the road to get to the canoe, dock and lake. This is not at all clear from the photos and description. However, its a very quiet road and, once we got over our initial disappointment it really was not a problem. The only other issue is that there is no A/C. So just be prepared for that. We arrived in 90 degree weather so it was uncomfortable. But a cooler evening and the use of all the fans improved the temperature and the rest of the weekend was wonderful.

Owner's Response: These guests also told me that they enjoyed watching the swans swim on the lake between my dock and the island. This year the couple have 5 signets and I am looking forward to watching them being taught to fly later in the season - always amusing.

Peaceful Cabin on the Lake

  • 5 of 5

My sister rented the cottage for the second year with her daughter and grandson. I live year round in Pine Plains. She loved returning to the place and is making wonderful summer memories with her grandson. I hope she returns next year. The cottage reminds us of the summers we spent on Brant Lake in the Adirondacks in the 1960's.

Cute eclectic cabin by pond

  • 5 of 5

This is a cute cabin with colorful vintage décor. The bedroom has a queensize bed and in the back room there is another single bed, that we used for our luggage. The living room has a comfy sofa and rocking chair. We took our meals outside at a wooden picnic table, facing the lake. There is a road between the cabin and the lake, but very little traffic. The cottage also comes with a little wooden deck with a chair at the edge of the lake, which is perfect for reading or daydreaming. We also put a nice big hammock between two trees in front of the house. The back patios has a charcoal grill. The setting is beautiful and tranquil, lots of birds singing and the occasional frog or fish stirring the surface of the lake. The kitchen has plenty of utensils to prepare meals, tea and coffee. Note the pond by the house is not suitable for swimming because it is covered in water lilies. It's perfect for a little canoe ride though. It's nice to take a run along the road, and there is also a nice hiking trail up to an old fire tower through the woods. Lots of bugs flying around but no major bites. We went to the public swim area and the family swim area and took a dip in the lake in both locations, but in late May there were tons of algae and other water plants. Might be good to bring shoes for swimming. The village has a supermarket (Peck's) for necessities and there is a little farmer's market a short drive away in Millerton.

Twin Island Lake is one ot three lakes next to Stissing Mountain and is good for boating and fishing. Stissing Lake is larger and deeper and good for swimming and boating with a public boat launch and recreation beach. Thompson Pond is a wildlife refuge. there are hiking trails around Thompson Pond and up Stissing Mountain to the fire Tower. The town of Pine Plains is small and quaint New England. It offers an Historic Inn for dining, several other small eateries, a WIFI coffee shop and library and good family owned market with local and organic produce.. Nearby towns, Millerton and Red Hook are larger and offer more; wineries, antique barns, and a “rail trail” in Millerton.

In Rhinebeck, The Dutchess County Fairgrounds has many events during the year.

A quick spritz after walking or swimming in the lake or just to cool off with refreshing well water - although it is hooked up to hot water. For those who may be too shy ( a deer might run by ) there is the option of the tub inside.
