Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Saugerties - 729 W. Saugerties Woodstock Rd

2 bedroom house; sleeps 4; 1 bathroom; dog friendly

Charming, custom-made 1600 sq ft contemporary home on quiet country road adjacent to hundreds of acres of Catskill State Park land. Nestled on 4 private acres with gardens and mountain views. Passive solar house with soaring Cathedral windows. Hiking trails and waterfalls abound in the hundreds of adjacent acres of state land. Bubbling creek just beyond the trees behind the house. Spacious outdoor deck with antique iron furniture; screened in porch with dining for 6; large country table seats 12 in dining room; wood stove; hardwood floors. . Weber grill, yard, large lawn and woods. Nicely furnished, high-speed internet, all appliances and amenities. There is also an upright piano. Perfect all year round: fall foliage, ski season and summer vacation. Convenient to three SKI resorts, Woodstock Film Festival and HITS. Close to all the major hiking areas: Overlook Mountain, Platte Clove wilderness, Kaaterskill Falls, etc.

SURROUNDED BY NATURE!: The house has large hand-made windows that allow a view of the natural surroundings from every room. We have seen deer, hawks, owls, eagles, rabbits, wild turkeys and more from our windows. Besides having extensive trails behind the house on state land, we are 10 minutes from world class hiking in the area. Overlook and Guardian mountains, Kaaterskill Falls, Platte Clove wilderness, Esopus tubing, Wilson State Park, etc.

DOG FRIENDLY!: The house and the town are dog friendly. Woodstock is the dog-friendliest town we have seen. Dogs are even allowed in the library! There are many trails in town that you can walk the dog off-leash: Comeau Property in the middle of woodstock, which has a long trail adjacent to the Sawkill Creek. There's also Big Deep and Little Deep which are 5 minutes from the house. Big Deep is a swimming hole in the middle of the woods. Little Deep is a trail also adjacent to the Sawkill Creek. There's a dam with a beautiful waterfall as well. This is also a good place to walk dogs off leash.

LOTS TO DO!: Besides hiking the glorious trails, there's biking terrific country roads. We also have lots of art galleries, music festivals and clubs, and great restaurants. For rock 'n roll fans there's the Bearsville Theater; for classical buffs there's Maverick Concerts; and there's other kind of music as well in the small clubs and bars. There's the Woodstock Film Festival, the Guitar Festival, Poetry Festival and more. There's the Walkway over the Hudson and tubing the Esopus. There's fishing and biking at the Ashokan reservoir. There's historic places to visit: Byrdcliffe, Woodstock Historical Society, Saugerties Lighthouse, Kingston Rondout.

In the winter, there is skiing at 3 ski resorts: Hunter, Wyndham and Belleayre. We are 40 minutes away from each of them.

About Owner: Mindy Pickard

My name is Mindy Pickard. My husband Gregory and I have had a weekend house in the Hudson Valley since 1987. We love the area, especially Woodstock and Saugerties. Our son, Clayton, plays soccer with the local rec team so we've been able to get to know many of the lucky people that live upstate year round. We live in NYC during the week. I am an acupuncturist and my husband is a songwriter and contractor. We have 3 dogs: Rainbow, Connor and Athena. They love the area because they can go off-leash hiking every weekend!

Owner: Mindy Pickard purchased this house in 2008

Why Owner: Mindy Pickard chose Hudson Valley

We wanted to be close to Platte Clove Road for the wonderful hiking. Also, we fell in love with the house and the cute out-buildings on the property. I feel the most beautiful elements of the house are the soaring, artist-made windows. They are just spectacular. The original owner was a woodworking enthusiast and he made the window frames, the storm windows and the screens. I also love the beams in the living room and the stone wall behind the wood burning stove.

What makes this house unique

The house has tons of light due to the propensity of windows and is surrounded by beautiful trees and gardens. During the summer season the vegetable garden is like a "secret garden" with all the old roses cascading up and around the fence and gates. We are also adjacent to hundreds of acres of NY State land, so there is hiking, cross country skiing and even waterfalls! The house is very private, on 4 acres, but only 8 to 10 minutes to both Woodstock and Saugerties villages.

I'd rather keep this place my little secret

  • 4 of 5

We had two wonderful weekends on this property. It feels like a home away from home and we are absolutely going to return. Mindy is lovely and so easy to work with. My dog had the time of his life swimming in the nearby watering hole and playing with some of the local dogs.

I almost didn't write this review because I don't want to share this little secret get away. I'll have to book early for next summer so that it doesn't get snatched up.

Thanks for everything Mindy

Robin Schlenger and David Sirois and Maru too!

Fantastic house

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house for a quiet Memorial Day Weekend with another couple and our little dog and absolutely loved it. The house is a perfect country house nestled in a lush and natural setting. The kitchen was well-equipped, the bathroom was spacious and clean and the bedrooms and bedding comfortable. The big deck and screened in porch were perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful country landscape. Mindy gave great hiking and swimming hole recommendations and was a wonderful host. Thanks so much for having us!

Four Day Getaway with Family and Dog

  • 5 of 5

We were hoping for a four day retreat in the Catskills looking for a relaxing cabin to unwind. This property met all of our expectations. The theme is classic French country side and the complimentary bottle of wine left for us was a welcome surprise. The property was very well maintained and the owners were very responsive to any needs or concerns. The dog friendly atmosphere made our vacation complete. I would recommend this property to anyone looking looking for a rustic French countryside experience in the Catskills.

Town and Country

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we turned down the driveway of this unique property, we knew we'd picked the right spot for our desperately-needed country idyll. As the other reviewers have noted, there is something so special about walking into a house that is clearly so well-cared for, and well-loved by, its owners. This magical cottage manages to be alternately rustic and modern, cozy and soaring, secluded and connected -- in short, it's everything a couple could possibly need it to be. And Mindy's personal touch -- from the welcome bottle of wine to her total accessibility to her detailed (and spot-on!) hiking recommendations -- makes this a totally stress-free rental. We hope to have the opportunity to stay here again.

The Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This house could not be more charming – it's exactly what you want out of a Catskill retreat. We were 2 couples + a dog, and it was the perfect size.

It ended up being below zero outside while we were there...and we could not have had a better time just staying inside. The open space, wood burning stove, selection of board games, well-supplied kitchen, and extensive library made for the most relaxing weekend.

The location is ideal. It's 10 minute drive into Woodstock, but feels incredibly secluded. And the grounds are stunning – we cannot wait to return come the warmer months.

Notes:
The house has stairs so it is not wheelchair accessible. We are dog friendly, but there is an extra security deposit for dogs. No dogs that scratch or tear up furniture or wood. Also, we expect people to pick up after their dogs if the dogs go on the lawn or garden area. Woods are fine for the dogs to go in. Dogs must be leashed as there are neighborhood dogs. Children are welcome but the house is not baby friendly, as there isn't a high chair or baby bumpers on the tables. Toddlers and older children are fine.
