Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Balestrate - Casa Balestra

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

The stone arch that you see as you enter the residence shows a carved date: 1886. That is when the house was built. The downstairs used to be the granary where my grandfather kept grains, olive oil and other products from his land.

The residence has a spacious ground floor with with vaulted ceilings and stone arches; a kitchen with a separate dining area and a full bathroom with shower. A comfortable wooden staircase leads to the second floor where there are three bedrooms and another bathroom with a bath tub/shower. A balcony overlooking the marina and the Tyrrhenian Sea offers a panoramic view of the sunset over the gulf.

Here you can sunbathe in privacy, or just sip a glass of wine while watching the sun go down while the fishing boats and sailboats come and go. You don't need a car to go to the beach. Both the East and West beaches are a short walk from the residence offering golden sand. Also at short distance the old fishermen landing good for snorkeling and fossil hunting.

Further Details: You like sightseeing, archeology and hiking? Or do you prefer wine tasting and culinary art? All is available to you with short day trips from the residence. Palermo,Marsala, Scopello, the natural reserve of Lo Zingaro where you can hike, and learn about the native plants, or snorkel in the deep blue water. Visit the medieval town of Erice, or Trapani with its coral museum. Drive by the salt road with its windmills and the salt beds of Mothia. Admire Segesta and Agrigento with their Greek temples. Pay a visit to the local wineries in the area. The cuisine, influenced by cultures from North Africa, Greece, Spain (some of the cultures that dominated Sicily over the centuries) will tempt your palate. The rich varietyes of wines that accompany this cuisine are superb. Cooking classes can be arranged by request.

In need of a relaxing massage? The Marina Holiday SPAS is at walking distance. The Spa offers facials and massages and was featured on the October 2010 issue of National Geographic Traveler.

About Concetta Viviano

I decided to name the residence CASA BALESTRA, which in Italian means crossbow, from the name of the town where it is located: Balestrate. I've lived in Virginia, USA for over 20 years. I teach Italian to adults. I've always traveled back and forth to Italy to visit my parents and take care of them. My parents left me this beautiful historic house and I plan to enjoy it when I can. I want to share CASA BALESTRA with you and hope that you will enjoy Sicily and its generous people, have a relaxing time and build beautiful memories.

Concetta Viviano purchased this house in 2009

Why Concetta Viviano chose Palermo

I inherited CASA BALESTRA from my mom. The house was built in 1886 when it was part of a larger building where my grandparents lived. It was later subdivided. My mom’s family has owned the residence for three generations. It has been restored and it is spacious and comfortable. As a kid I spent all my summers in this house, visiting grandpa. I have great memories about the time spent in this house.

What makes this house unique

When you first enter the house you are struck by the space that surrounds you and by the comfortable sofas in the living room. Then you look out the window and you are in awe. The blue water, the mountains around the large bay and the boats in the marina!!! I could sit on the balcony with a good book and a glass of wine all day. I feel very comfortable in this house and so are the many guests that have stayed in it.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hope all is well and you had a good Christmas and Holiday Season.

Just 11 months ago we were preparing to become residents of Balestrate for a month, thanks to you and Casa Balestra.

I was reviewing some pictures that we are very fond of and Dorothy and I were thinking of the wonderful time we had last March.

We cannot express how much we loved the town, the merchants, Annamarie, the petro station attendant, the restaurants, the shops, the church, the animals, both dogs and cats, Rosanna, and the smiles.

The beauty of Sicily will always be in our mind, but the people made the biggest impression.

Everything we hoped for and more!

  • 5 of 5

I came to Sicily to trace my family roots. I selected this home for the obvious reason clean and accurately reflected in the pictures. Half way between Palermo and Trapani, everything I wanted to see in western Sicily was a short drive away. I was right about the location. What I didn't know was that only 100 yards from my doorstep lay a wonderful place for breakfast, lunch or late night snack, next door to a fabulous bar/nightclub which featured live music almost every night. The house is a two short block walk from the center of Belestrate which has an ample supply of restaurants, grocery stores and all of the amenities including a wonderful welcoming population. Stefano Provenzano and his family, the owners of Rosa Dei Venti where we ate 3 times treated us like we were a part of his family. Rosanna was only a phone call away and always helpful. Thank you Concetta for sharing your home with our family. We couldn't have asked for more.

Charming, extremely well-quipped & Lovely place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely house. It is extremely well-equipped, spotlessly clean and comfortable and very well located for exploring that area of Sicily. The owner and housekeeper were extremely helpful and friendly. Everything worked very well in the house including the wifi. The local town folks are very friendly and welcoming. The local food is wonderful too. Would definitely stay there again if lucky enough to get back to that part of Sicily!

A true Sicilian feel

  • 5 of 5

The best possible review is to take your own advise and we did. We stayed in Casa Balestra in 2013 for 1 month and returned for 6 weeks in April/May 2016.

We love the house, large, clean, perfectly located and charming. The Mediterranean expands out in front of you as you dine on your balcony. Can that be any better.

The town of Balestrate is welcoming and is filled with incredible people who are warm and helpful.

Great location to see Sicily, within a short, less than 1 hour drive from Eurice, Marsala , Mazara, Trapani, San Vito, Scopello, Zingaro, Segesta, Alcamo, Palermo, Monreale, and many wineries and other sites.

The Piazza in Balestrate is a location not to be missed. A beautiful church anchors the space, with good restaurants and shops nearby, but most importantly the gathering place for the town. The piazza still brings the young and the old together. the children and the pets, the strollers and the canes, the traditional dance and the modern dance and the old food and the new chefs.

If you love the true culture of Italy and Sicily and want to have a HOME for your stay, this is the location.

The owner gives wonderful support and manages the process in a first class manner.

You can trust the description of this home.

One day we hope to return one more time to see our new friends and enjoy Balestrate and Casa Balestra.

Romantic, Magic Casa Balestra

  • 5 of 5

WOW!! Casa Balestra exceeded all of our expectations. We arrived at the lovely family home and were met by the housekeeper who welcomed us and gave us an excellent tour of the home complete with operating instructions. Connie, the owner had delicious local pastries, cold water a bottle of local Sicilian wine waiting for us. That was a treat. The home is immaculate, spacious charming and an extremely ideal location for exploring the town of Balestra and much of western Sicily.

Each morning we had a delicious breakfast in the lovely kitchen with a wonderful sea view. We were able to purchase groceries at the excellent local markets which were all in walking distance from the house. There is a parking spot directly in front of the house!! Each day following an adventure to locals sites, we were able to enjoy an amazing sunset on the spacious terrace overlooking the sea. After watching the sunset we would walk into town and dine at some of the most amazing, delicious and unpretentious restaurants in all of Sicily. While walking to dinner in town we always felt very safe and were warmly embraced by the locals. From the house, it is a very short walk to the lovely local beach. I would highly recommend staying at this charming, romantic Casa!!

True Sicilian charm.

  • 5 of 5

Being able to stay at Casa Balestrate made our Sicilian journey all the more special. Balestrate is a quaint little town with wonderful people, great restaurants, and is in close proximity to many of the marvels of the Island making 'day trips' feasible. The home is clean, comfortable, fully equipped, roomy, and well-appointed with authentic Sicilian furnishings and knick-knacks. Roseanna the property manager was wonderful and very helpful. The view from the balcony entices one to spend hours gazing out and sipping the local wine. I would return there over and over again if the opportunity presented itself. Thank you Concetta for sharing your treasure on the Mar Tirreno.

Wunderschöne Lage über dem Meer

  • 5 of 5
