Didn't want to come home
Couldn't have been better
This was our (two couples of AARP vintage) third home stay venture in France and our unanimous favorite, with its painting-like views of the Dordogne River and valley...and nearby patisserie! The stone house and its decor and furnishings are lovely and comfortable, the kitchen charming and furnished with everything we needed to make all our meals. We took full advantage of the beautiful weather for outdoor dining and adventuring to the surrounding villages, castles, and prehistoric sites, and thatJeri and Paul, our wonderful hosts, were always there to answer questions. Sharing a glass of wine, and joining them and a group of friends on a Sunday hike will always be part of our fondest memories.
French charm with all the modern comforts
We spent the most marvelous week at La Borie des Combes thanks to Paul and Jeri, our delightful hosts. What a wonderful mix of French charm and all the modern comforts, all in a historic farmhouse. Besides the charming interior, we loved dining and resting in the beautiful garden.
The location is excellent - many towns and restaurants are all nearby, perfect for day trips, but we always looked forward to returning to our warm home.
We will definitely return and we highly recommend La Borie des Combes.
A Dream Rental!
My husband and I, along with my 79 year old father, rented the house for a week. The descriptions and photos are accurate, except the second bath with fountain was not available. They were remodeling it.
The kitchen is nearly perfect, and this is from a very picky cook. The modern 5 burner gas stove and convection oven were a dream to cook on. I found olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, coffee & filters for the coffee maker and some other odds and ends the day we came. The only thing I missed was a knife sharpener. The local bakery (patisserie) has the most fabulous bread and croissants and is less than 5 min. drive.
The beds are marvelously comfortable! The linens are extremely nice and pretty. And the walls of this place are so thick not a sound disturbs you at night.
The garden area is beautiful, even in cold and rainy April. The view of the river and all the plantings by the owners make it a delight.
All in all - a perfect experience and definitely a great deal!
Wonderful French Farmhouse
We had a lovely stay at the farmhouse. It was very centrally located for sightseeing. The owners were very helpful with places to see and where to go and also with a new IPad. The accommodations were clean and neat and we didn't need to ask for anything. A week was not long enough and we would love to go back again.
A week in the country with helpful guides
My husband and I spent a delightful week in the Gold Room in May, 2011. The room featured charming decoration, the bathroom was newly remodeled and comfortable with plenty of hot water, shower only, a huge medicine cabinet for storage, and a very good hair dryer. The bed was comfortable, but might be a bit short for very tall people. In the room, we appreciated having a table & chair set, fridge, micro, coffee and tea pots and a Brita water filter as well as dishes and wine glasses for two. Access to a large, beautiful yard with a shared picnic table was a special treat. Maintenance and cleanliness were excellent, and we had the use of convenient laundry facilities and a local telephone. This is a great rental for 2 independent people who don't need (or want to pay for) special services at a hotel. This is rural France, described by a friend as "the belly of France." We visited caves, castles and gardens and lunched out every day. The deli at the Carfour in a neighboring town had great take out food and good, reasonably priced wine. A restaurant behind the hotel in Bezac (Tunnels?) warranted two visits from us. You need a car here, and we would recommend getting it locally rather than driving from other locations in France. (Both toll roads and gasoline are very expensive, so a trip on the TGV is better than a drive on the autoroute! from Paris.)
But the helpful hosts were perhaps the best part of the visit. (For those concerned with lack of language skills in France, Jeri and Phil speak English natively.) They are great local boosters and suggest local activities if encouraged. There are river activities nearby, but we did not indulge. Maybe next time.
Overlooking the beautiful Dordogne River, just 4 km from the famous Beynac Castle where the enchantingly haunting magnificence of this eleventh-century historical gem has earned the respect of major movie directors resulting in several motion pictures being filmed there. The Canoeing, Prehistory Caves, Night Markets in July and August, Breathtaking Sarlat, Hiking, Cycling, as well as Lascaux II and other amazing pre-history sites, festivals, Farmer's Markets, Kayaking are all close by, as well as the opportunity to visit The Most Beautiful Villages in France.
