From Vineyard Style Magazine: Colin Whyte, President of Martha's Vineyard Construction, left his happy childhood home near Biscayne Bay, FL to start a wonderful and varied journey that would one day lead him to sailboat summers, Martha’s Vineyard mansions and a company built from fortitude and perseverance. “I had enough support and stability at home that I could just go. I never knew that when I left home at age 16, I’d never be back again.” Choosing to go to an all boys boarding school in Tennessee, McCallie School taught hard lessons of discipline and survival. It was there that Colin made life-long friends and began to desire the mysteries that life and experience had to offer. In hope of avoiding a sojourn in Vietnam Colin took off on his motorcycle, partnered with friends, and threw himself into education and small-time enterprises. Self-taught, he learned how to run a successful business from varied jaunts including: house moving, dictionary selling, surfboard renting, interning in the Senate, and—finally, construction clean up. Graduating from Brown University with a liberal arts degree led him to a winter at Law School, and a stint back at Brown Graduate School in art. “Applying to schools, I was really just a kid trying to stay out of Vietnam; little did I know, it was the motorcycle that would save me. A serious accident taught me the power of the motorcycle. My back was handed a lesson and Martha’s Vineyard became my home.”
Colin purchased this House in 1986

Best Villa with Amazing views!
Words cannot describe the color of the water in Chalk Sound! My family of 5 (3 kids-14, 11 and 8) had the best vacation ever! We loved everything about Poinciana. It was very clean, the beds were really comfortable. The outdoor hot shower was great after a day at the beach or kayaking. There was a generator that kicked on when the power went out one day while exploring the island. The a/c really cooled us down at nighttime for sleeping. Rebecca met us at the Smart grocery store then gave us a tour of the villa. We explored Taylor Bay, Smith's Reef, Bight Reef, and Leeward beach. We went to Sapodilla beach for the sunset but I found that beach to be too crowded for our tastes. Taylor Bay beach was my favorite. There is a baby sea turtle we saw both times we went.We swam with sea turtles at sunrise at Bight Reef! I read that the best time to see the turtles is at sunrise. They were over a grassy area just eating. So cool!! We went to Da Conch Shack on Weds. night for their weekly beach party. Great time! We went to the Thurs. night fish fry at Bight Children's park. Very fun! We also tried Bugaloo's which was very good also. We went to Las Brisas for dinner, good but pricey. If you eat there before 5pm you can use their pool which may be nice for the kids next time. We also tried Sharkbite Grill at Turtle Cove marina, very reasonably priced and good food as well. We brought a whole suitcase of food with us and ate breakfast and lunch at the villa or beach. Saved alot of $ that way as groceries and restaurants are very expensive. We kayaked several times to the little islands all around Chalk Sound and got to feed the iguanas which was very amazing! Kids loved that! No matter where you are at Poinciana the views are absolutely breathtaking! One thing to be aware of is the boardwalks between the 2 buildings have a bit of a gap between the planks so be VERY careful not to drop anything small that could fall through the gaps. On our very last night there we dropped a set of villa keys while opening the master bedroom door and they fell right though the planks. Right underneath there is a locked garage so we weren't able to retrieve them. We let Rebecca know right away and she was VERY understanding and said not to worry at all, although we felt horrible about it. But hey, at least we had another set of keys! I would give this villa 10 stars if I could!! We can't wait to come back!! It was so peaceful and relaxing. Best vacation EVER!!!! :)
Spring break in paradise
We had an amazing time at the Tree House on Chalk Sound. The house was perfect for our family of four. The house had everything we could possibly need - amazing views, great A/C, and great beds. Our kids loved the tree house feel and the privacy. The layout of the house was the coolest. The power went out and within seconds the generator kicked on - amazing! I can't say enough about this place. Very clean and the views are breathtaking. Loved the kayaks too!
Fantastic location with an awesome home.
Our family of 4 (two boys 9 and 10) stayed the first week of April. Everything with Colin and Rebecca was seamless as far as making arrangements and communication. Poinciana provides the privacy and space we were hoping for. Construction next door is ongoing, but that’s life. They would start around 7am and stop around 5pm. It worked well for us as we turn in early and were awake for every sunrise. Sapodilla Beach is a bit busy for our taste and parking is congested, but it’s still a beautiful spot. Taylor Bay is still less discovered and more our speed. The boys swam with sea turtles on multiple occasions at Taylor Bay. We ate in and out as there are many great spots for dinning. Colin’s recommendations are spot on.
Pictures and words don’t say enough about how special Poinciana is. We hope to make a return visit soon!
Lovely house, beautiful setting!
The house was just as described and all our interactions with the owner and property manager were very professional, courteous, and friendly. The property is just breathtaking and we had an amazing vacation! Thank you all!
Amazing and relaxing vacation spot!
My husband, two kids and I just enjoyed an incredibly relaxing week at Villa Poinciana. Colin was helpful through email with booking and questions, and Rebecca helped us from
there. We arranged to meet Rebecca at the Smart grocery store to pick up a few things after we landed, and she then led us to the villa and gave us a very thorough tour. We had a couple small issues, including the WiFi and Rebecca responded quickly to all texts and calls. The villa had everything we needed, and many things including the decks and floors inside seemed to be brand new. Special touches like the clothes lines and outdoor lights in all the right spots were great! The outdoor areas were the most special part. We completely enjoyed the decks, kayaks and little sandy beach. My kids paddled across to the little island with iguanas that came running from everywhere for food. We checked out Sopadilla Bay (across the street a little before Villa Poinciana). It was pretty but a little crowded for our taste, and Taylor Bay (a little past the villa and down a private road). We loved Taylor Bay! It was uncrowded, less windy than the other side and beautiful.
On a very expensive island, we found Villa Poinciana to be a great value.
Thanks for a memorable vacation, Colin and Rebecca!
