Melaleuca Holiday Cottage - cosy cottage with stunning cliff views

Bedrooms 3
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Relax in this quiet and delightful older-style cottage

Melaleuca overlooks the sandstone bluffs of Shipley plateau, bushland reserve and the Kanimbla valley.

It sleeps six, with a queen size bedroom, a double bedroom and a third bedroom with bunks - with electric blankets, doonas and pillows on all the beds. For infants there is a cot. (Please see the images section for Melaleuca’s floor plan).

There is a sitting room with open fireplace and a separate dining room. A modern gas space heater provides warmth to the entire house.

The dining room opens to a spacious sundeck with superb, uninterrupted views.

The bathroom includes a bath and shower, and there is unlimited hot water.

The kitchen is equipped with refrigerator, electric stove with ceramic cooktop, microwave and dishwasher.

There is a DVD player, and digital satellite television ensures clear reception of commercial and public channels. There are board games and lots of holiday reading.

Please note: Melaleuca is comfortably furnished, well maintained and clean, but it is an older property. That means a few cracks and crevices, a bit of dust, the occasional friendly spider. If your preference is for something immaculate you may wish to look at newer build properties.

For other guests’ comfort, Melaleuca is STRICTLY NO PETS

What can you do there?

Some of the most beautiful walks in the Blue Mountains start near Blackheath.

Melaleuca overlooks the start of the Centennial Glen and Porter's Pass walks, which take you into a secluded valley by waterfalls, through rainforest and eucalyptus forest, down a gorge full of fresh water pools and around the sandstone cliffs that tower over the Kanimbla Valley.

More ambitious treks into the Grose Valley start a 10 minute drive away on the other side of Blackheath.

There is abundant wildlife in the vicinity of Melaleuca. Yellow-tailed black cockatoos frequent the area, as well as wedge-tailed eagles, kangaroos and many types of lizard.

There are many gift shops, art galleries and antique shops at Blackheath, including the converted Victory Theatre, which has multiple outlets within a vast space. A wonderful and inexpensive cafe is attached.

Within a half-hour drive you can reach:

*Horse-riding at Centennial Glen stables

*The iconic view of the Three Sisters at Katoomba

*The Imax cinema at Katoomba

*Old style picture house "Mount Vic Flicks"

*The beautiful Megalong Valley

*Japanese Bathhouse near Hartley

Jenolan Caves makes a feasible day trip - at just over an hour away from Melaleuca.

Food and drink

There is plenty of good food available at Blackheath village, ten minutes walk away from Melaleuca.

*Escarpment is a small well-priced tapas bar

*The Blackheath Patisserie has excellent sourdough breads.

*For pies and cakes try the Bakehouse on Wentworth.

*Anonymous makes the best coffee in the village.

* Blackheath has two pubs. The Gardners arms, on the highway at the western end of the village, has a good selection of pies, steaks and other hot food.

All provisions can be bought locally from Blackheath village, which features two supermarkets, greengrocer, butcher and delicatessen shops.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a fantastic stay at your cottage. It is a beautiful house that suited our family perfectly. We were able to visit all our favourite Blackheath spots from there and we adored the view from the back deck. We hope to be able to come and stay again!

Thanks for offering such a lovely place to stay. The heater kept us nice and warm during the cold nights and early mornings. The books and games provided us with lots of enjoyment too. The cottage has a really homely feel that not all rental homes have.

amazing birdlife!

  • 3 of 5

My two friends and I loved our stay at Melaleuca cottage. It is a bit rustic, but the kitchen ( very well supplied with any cooking equipment you might need) and bathroom are both nice and modern which is a big plus. The gas heating worked well. Lovely bush setting and the birds were great, crimson rosellas, wattle birds, sulfur crested cockatoos, satin bower birds, eastern rosellas and a pair of rainbow lorikeets all visited us. A magpie even ate out of my hand. The parking is a bit difficult out the front. And the door to the deck is hard to open, it sticks up the top. Beds were fine. Great views too.

Owner's Response: Thank you Angie for reviewing Melaleuca. I'm glad you enjoyed the cottage and the wonderful view of the cliffs at Shipley and out towards Kanimbla Valley. We keep prices very reasonable by having guests bring their own linen and firewood, and we have several families who return every year. You would be most welcome any time in future. Julie.

Loved the setting and the original features of the house.

The house was not very clean - dust on floor and under beds. There was a tray left in the oven with cold chips.

Beds were comfortable and plenty of household equipment.

Owner's Response: Dear Megan I am very sorry you had this experience. The oven and floors are on the cleaner's checklist and I have made an urgent request to understand what has gone wrong here. I am glad you appreciated the house and facilities more generally. Regards Julie
