All that just a scenic 40 minute coastal drive from the Cairns International Airport, Cairns, Australia.

Local Attractions

Port Douglas is Australia at its finest. Fringed by the spectacular Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage-listed rainforests, the township is a delightful blend of modern style yet tradition charm.

Shops and galleries are interspersed with chic roadside eateries, stylish a-la-carte restaurants and cosmopolitan bars.

Add two international standard golf courses, the diverse Marina Mirage and magnificent Four Mile Beach, and it is obvious why Port Douglas has become the holiday hideaway of the rich and famous.

Hosts John and Annie have lived in Port Douglas for years and are extremely familiar with the region and its diverse tours and attractions. They are more than happy to provide information and guidance on the most appropriate activities to help you make the most of your Tropical North Queensland holiday.

Popular local attractions include:

Daintree Rainforest

Visit the worlds oldest rainforest—Daintree Rainforest—located in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. This 894,000 hectare rainforest is the home to thousands of species of birds and animals, as well as a spectacular array of flora. A range of tours is available.

Great Barrier Reef

Arguably Mother Natures greatest marvel lies on Port Douglas doorstep. It is of course the Great Barrier Reef, on of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring features of the world. A wide range of vessels make daily trips to the reef, allowing guests to snorkel, swim, sail or just view the delights through a glass bottom boat.

Beaches

Four Mile Beach at Port Douglas is renowned for its tranquil beauty but Tropical North Queensland also boast many other diverse beaches. The 40 minute drive from Cairns to Port Douglas takes in a number of beachside towns, each with its own individual feel and attractions. Choose from a wide range of watersports and activities at these beaches or just browse among shops, galleries and eateries.

Aboriginal Experiences

Aboriginal traditions are an important part of the history of this region. The Aboriginal culture is presented for visitors at the multi-award winning Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, just north of Cairns. Visitors can interact with the members of the Aboriginal community, learn about bush foods and medicines, and see a corroboree. Kuku Yalanji people of the Mossman George guided tours are also available to gain an insight into local Aboriginal culture and traditions.

Wildlife parks and tours

Tropical North Queensland is well known for its fauna, and the regions native species are showcased at many parks, farms and sanctuaries throughout the area. Two of the most prominent are wild World between Cairns and Port Douglas, and Rainforest Habitat at Port Douglas. Both offer varied experiences for visitors.

Skyrail Cable Cars and Scenic Rail

Skim over the rainforest canopy on the Skyrail cable cars from Cairns to the village of Kuranda, then enjoy the spectacular sights as you meander back down the mountains on the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway. Both are musts for the visitor who wants to experience the true beauty and incredible scenery of this amazing area.

Beyond Port Douglas

The regions thriving sugar industry has its heart at Mossman, just north of Port Douglas. Mossman also boasts the closest and most accessible rainforests to Port Douglas - Mossman Gorge, with its swimming holes and walking tracks. Beyond Mossman is the township of Daintree where guests can cruise the Daintree River and view its diverse flora and fauna.

Atherton Tablelands

A drive to the picturesque Atherton Tablelands is like a step back in time - rolling green hills dotted with charming villages and lush farmlands. A wide range of crops as well as cattle are farmed on the Tablelands so the landscape is diverse. Ideal for a leisurely drive and the chance to browse in the shops and galleries and sample some fine local fare.

Sports, fishing and adventure

Sports—adventure and otherwise—are plentiful in the North. Port Douglas has tow high class golf courses while the Cairns region has others. Game fishing is a northern speciality as are other sports such as white water rafting, bungy jumping, parasailing and other water sports. Hire bicycles for a closer view of this region, go horseriding, kayaking, or take the easy way on a motorcycle tour, hot air balloon ride, helicopter or tiger moth flight.

Historic Cooktown and Cape Tribulation

Just south of Daintree, a car ferry will take you across to Cape Tribulation National Park which features spectacular rainforest, pristine beaches and boardwalks. The Daintree World Heritage Rainforest has been likened to an ever-changing, living museum.

Good

No. The place was good but the service wasn't. The receptionist made bobo. Gave us wrong villa at the beginning. We didn't get Wi-Fi. Found cockroach in the room and hair on the wash basin. The fridge was not cooling well. Swimming pool was nice and worm. Rooms were good size.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments Nazim, Yes I had many check-ins the day of your arrival and did place you into the smaller apartment for all of 5 minutes and corrected my error as soon as I realized. I could not leave you in the cheaper apartment with a good conscience when you had paid for the larger luxury one. My free WiFi is working great in all my apartments so as I'm not an electronics expert with your chosen device/phone, that one is not my error. You didn't mention you had a problem while staying with us, which I may have been able to assist with, it may have been as simple as your typo error for the password. As for insects in the tropics, all I can say is, there are plenty and while we do have baits, we try not to spray excessive poisons, firstly for the health and well being of our customers and secondly as we care about the planet and the pristine tropical environment surrounding us. I can assure everyone else reading this that there are no worms in the pool, it is heated during the winter months and Nazim means to say it was warm. Yourself and girlfriend visiting did appear to be laughing, canoodling and generally having a good time otherwise and I look forward to hosting another fun Port Douglas adventure for you in the future.

Close to the beach and lovely garden

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time, the kitchen facilities were pretty basic if you wanted to self cater. A good sharp knife, coffee making facilities such as a plunger at least and a tea strainer would be really useful, and as this was advertised as a self catering apartment, I think it was a little expensive for the facilities supplied. However we were really comfortable and the owner/manager was really helpful and the garden was lovely,

Owner's Response: Hi Tracy and thanks for your kind comment. The Studio apartment you had booked is designed for shorter stays or guests who prefer to dine out while on holidays, or otherwise as an interconnecting room forming part of a twin key 2 bedroom apartment and is clearly advertised with a kitchenette. For your next stay with us may I suggest you book the 1 bedroom apartment style with a full kitchen facility. All of our apartments are equipped with plungers, it's possible that the guest before you had smashed the one supposed to be in your pantry, however, no matter as I always carry spares and it was only a request away from you should you have chosen to bring it to my attention. Not all guests are honest with breakages and during a busy peak season your guest feedback is invaluable to enable me to look after you better with the smaller items so I thank you for your comment. You will find that as Port Douglas is a premier holiday destination at the Great Barrier Reef/Daintree Rain-forest, for both domestic and international travelers, that Dreamcatcher Apartments represents excellent value for money in comparison with other accommodations in and around the Port Douglas area and in particular the beach-side locations such as ours. In fact guests staying with us have commented on other similar resorts pricing, stating to me that "they only want to rent an apartment and not buy it", so I do get where you're coming from. Other considerations due to Far North Queensland's remote location are the extra transport costs involved for everything from fuel to groceries, which is just a part of life we have no other choice with. Rates change out of the peak season and become more reasonable between November through to May, which may suit your budget better for your next Port Douglas vacation.
