Stunning cottage!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in Ballaghy cottage in July 2014 attending a friend’s wedding. What a stunning cottage! And beautiful patio and garden! I really didn’t want to go home! It had everything we needed for the weekend and more. The lovely owners were so accommodating they even went to the trouble of filling the fridge with breakfast for us so we were well set up heading off to the wedding. I couldn't recommend a stay there more!

Absolutely Amazing House

  • 5 of 5

This has to be the nicest house I have ever stayed in ! I stayed there in Nov. with five other people and we loved every minute of our stay ! We were there for a wedding and staying in this house made it a precious memory forever for all of us ! The comfort and cleanliness and the atmosphere in this house is next to none ! We did not want to leave at the end. I would go back there and so would all five others who stayed with me !

Set in the heart of Ireland, in the historic village of Castletown Geoghegan this beautifully refurbished cottage will make an excellent base for your exploration of the Irish Midlands. Located midway between Dublin and Galway this country getaway is ideally situated between the towns of Athlone ,Mullingar, Tullamore and Longford. Within walking distance, the village has a church a well stocked grocery shop, post office and three cosy country pubs. With Lough Ennel less than five minutes drive away you are within easy striking distance of a pitch and put course, fishing, boating, water sports at the Jonathon Swift Park and Lilliput Adventure Centre. For lovers of golf the area has numerous top quality golf courses including Mullingar Golf Club, New Forest in Tyreelllpass, Moate and Glasson. The nearby town of Kilbeggan is the home of the oldest Irish whiskey distillery with its own visitors centre and museum. Kilbeggan race meeting are held throughout the summer season.

There are plenty of modern amenities in the major towns in the area, cinemas, swimming poopls, leisure centres, bowling and horse riding. For those with an interest in local history, the cottage is situated across the road from one of Ireland finest examples of a Motte and Bailey dating from Norman times. The village is named after the the McGeoghegan family, extensive land owners disposed in Cromwellian times. Their coat of arms can be seen on a headstone in the old R.C. graveyard. The Church of Ireland graveyard is the burial place of Arthur Boyd Rochfort recipient of the Victoria Cross Medal of Honour for Valour during the First World War. His family were the original owners of Middleton Park House which is now an exclusive wedding venue and fine dining restaurant. For those interested in more recent history it was in the local village hall that Joe Dolan performed at his first dance for the local hurling club. Joe went on to world wide fame and his life size statue can be seen in Mullingar.
