About Graham and Jenny Venters
Jenny and I have both been in the Licenced trade and I am a quaified Chef. We are both retired now and live next door to the cottage in the main house, so we are usually available to advise or assist whenever needed. However we will never be a nuisance to you and only seek to enhance you holiday experience.
Graham and Jenny Venters purchased this Cottage in 2009
Why Graham and Jenny Venters chose Estrela da Calheta
We bought the main house in 2009, it was in a very bad state but as soon as we saw it we just fell in love with it and so we renovated it and then we did the cottage 3 years later in early 2012. It was a derilict 'Cow House' and we did the reconstruction sympathetically to the original style and in a manner that we would be happy to stay in it ourselves, Hence the cottage is very well equipped to a high standard and is very comfortable. We chose to live in this area as it is very quiet and the views are out of this world. The house and cottage are a little off the beaten track and so you will experience the 'Real' Madeira as against the Tourist images usually offered. Also, being at 400 mtrs altitude it does not get too hot in Summer or too Cold in Winter.
What makes this Cottage unique
We can recommend a small family run car hire company.
100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date.
Fantastic cottage for a get away from the world break
Accommodation was excellent with stunning views across the mountains and sea. A good base to get out and about or just chill-out. Jenny and Graham were fantastic hosts.
All that we could have wished for
We were warmly welcomed by Jenny and Graham to this well-thought out apartment which was ideal for our needs. Pam could paint from the roof terrace or the terrace and we had all the facilities for self-catering in comfort. Thank you
Thank you, it was a pleasure to have you stay with us. We are always happy to know that our guests have enjoyed their stay at Palheiro Cottage.
First rate location and welcome
Ideal location and we were very fortunate with the weather. Sunny and warm most days, mix of cloud and sun on a couple of days. Very warm welcome from Jenny and Graham including a bottle of wine, bread, home made jam and butter and milk. Cottage had all the facilities we could have wished for. We had booked a car with Status Flamingo as suggested by our hosts - effective, reliable and good value for money. Explored central , west of island and Funchal. Can access stunning Levada walks a few km up the mountain road from the cottage.
Only negative was our return flight. TAP cancelled their flights on our day of return because of winds. Some other companies did leave but not TAP. Understand need for safety but it was the chaotic communication from TAP that caused frustration. We spent 10 hours at the airport sorting out arrangements for a hotel and link flights for the following day. Their arrangements were then robust but they could have been far more efficient and effective on the day of departure
The return apart all aspects of our break were high quality.
Thank you, we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and that you loved Madeira. We are really sorry your return flight was cancelled but are pleased that you got home safely the next day.
Stunning views, well maintained
We spent 5 nights in Palheiro Cottage, and found it a very comfortable place to stay. Everything was clean and in immaculate condition and the kitchen well equipped. Jenny was very helpful, promptly supplying two heaters and an electric blanket when it turned cold in the evenings, and we really appreciated the welcome pack, with home-made jam, eggs, and a bottle of wine.
The cottage is well situated for the coast (a sheltered sea pool to swim in in Calheta) and Levada walks, and, being high up above the town, the views down to the sea are fantastic in all weathers. Although on a street with other houses the only noises to disturb us were those of barking and howling dogs. Parking is on-street, but there was never a problem finding a space. Our only problem really was the toilet, which cannot even manage toilet paper - we felt this meant it was not really fit for purpose.
Thank you for your kind revue. We are happy to help our clients where ever possible. But we would point out that in keeping with many other rural locations throughout Europe Septic tanks are the norm and as is our case the system cannot accept paper as this blocks the walls and seepage stops. This leads to a foul tank with all the incumbent problems of smell, bacteria build up and expensive emptying costs. If you travel extensively you will know this and accept that sometimes all mod cons are simply not possible. However we are pleased that generally you enjoyed your stay with us.
We had a magnificent stay in the Palheiro Cottage
Every aspect of the stay was perfect.
The friendliness and attentiveness of the hosts.
The furniture, the perfection of the installed equipment, .....
The nice panoramic location.
There is one comment; not necessarily negative:
The steep narrow access road is challenging for the driver.
Thank you, we are always pleased that our guests have enjoyed their stay at our cottage. The road to the cottage does seem steep when guests first arrive (especially if they are from a country that is flat) but as long as you take your time you soon get used to it. Remember Madeira is a hilly island.
Deserves 5 stars!
Jenny and Graham are lovely – welcoming, kind, and attentive to detail. They keep everything in the property ship-shape, and make sure everything is thoughtfully ready for your arrival.
The place is well-equipped for hanging out, basing a levada hiking adventure, cooking up your catch-of-the-day, or just watching the sun set over the sea across the valley with a glass of Poncha in hand. The roof terrace is especially nice on warm days. The property is one of many quaint and pretty houses on the hills above Calheta, and has a lovely view.
Recommended for a couple or a solo traveller, although Jenny and Graham were thoughtful in providing us a comfortable cot.
Thanks Jenny & Graham!
Thank you so much for your lovely review. It was a pleasure having you stay with us.
We base the cottage on a couple sharing and have a double bed, we have a fold down bed (cot as said in Canada) which can be used for a child or 3rd person or if it is 2 people that wish to sleep separately. The fold down bed can be set up in the lounge or in the bedroom.
So for a relaxing holiday away from the tourist areas with beautiful views book now, we look forward to having you.
Our cottage is located on the outskirts of Estrela which is the commercial centre for the Calheta Region. We are withing easy walking distance of the village and some Lavada Walks . Also some of the most spectacular Lavada Walks (the 25 Fontes at Rabacal) are within our region and are easily accessed by car. The Marina is but a short drive from the cottage and this has a number of Restaurants and Bars. There is also a sand beach next to the Marina with a safe swimming area, although you may choose to go out to sea with Graham big game fishing or bottom fishing for your supper! The boat is fully licenced and insured. 15 Kilometers away is Cabo Girao, the second highest Sea Cliff in the World with a cable car from the top to almost the bottom and a view point with glass floor.Swim in the natural pools at Porto Moniz which is just a short drive away.
