The house is in the historic centre of Murat-Le-Quaire a beautiful and very old village. The area is known for its stunning countryside (great for cycling, walking, skiing, fishing etc) and hearty mountain food but there are also lots of historic buildings and sites to see.
The house is just 10 minutes from the local ski resort of Le Mont Dore and only five minutes from La Bourboule which is a very popular summer resort with lots of restaurants, shops, supermarkets etc and a superb, and very child friendly park called Parc La Fenestre . La Bourboule also has tennis courts and a fabulous new indoor swimming pool. In the summer you may prefer to swim in the Plan D’eau swimming and fishing lake that is less than 10 minutes walk from the house. Or take a short drive to Borts des Orgues or Lac Chambon both of which have beaches and offer excellent swimming along with kayaking, sailing, water parks and boat hire.
Murat-le-Quaire itself has a great café/restaurant the Relais de la Toinette where you can also order bread for collection. There is also a shop/tea room which sells local produce such as cheese, auvergnian ham, honey and Myrtille (blueberry) Jam and a goat farm where you can visit the goats and buy cheese at the same time.
Our traditional Auvergnian farmhouse with the characteristic round slates used in the area is arranged on three floors and has been completely recently refurbished thoughout to a high standard with solid oak floors, staircase and doors.
The very sunny south facing front garden is enclosed to keep young children or dogs in and has superb views across the valley.
On the ground floor is a large kitchen dining room with a wood burning stove and a large dining table that comfortably seats up to 12 people with a comfortable sitting room next door with a 40in flat screen TV.
About the Skiing: A review on mountainpassions.com recently described the ski area,'While the Auvergne may lack the sheer gravitas of the French Alps, it offers one unique attraction: the chance to ski down the flanks of an extinct volcano in the startling landscapes of the Parc Régional des Volcans.' Yes the landscapes are stunning & the skiing is quite extensive (85km in total) with two linked resorts: Le Mont Dore on the north facing slopes and Superbesse over on the sunnier side of the mountain. There's also a small resort at nearby Chastreix which is well worth a day visit.
Ski resort: It's a very French resort with just enough english speaking ESF instructors to go round. The skiing is suitable for all levels of skier including some very challenging off-piste when the conditions are right. The website rates the area as offering some of the best off-piste in France. The other big attraction are the prices! A six day high season adult ski pass costs just 125 euros.
The area also has plenty of cross country skiing, snow shoeing and even ice climbing.
It's a great area for both on and off-road cycling. The Tour de France passed through Murat le Quaire in 2011 and visits the area every few years. There are plenty of marked mountain bike (VTT) trails too some of which start almost from the front door.
It’s also a great area for hiking and running. And even in high season it's possible to walk for miles without seeing a soul.
There is an excellent 9 hole golf course close to Le Mont Dore and about 15 minutes drive from the house. It's at 1100m so is closed from 15th November to 2nd April due to the snow. Other activites available locally include a spectacular high ropes centre at Le Mont Dore, 10 pin bowling and ice skating and two casinos at Le Mont Dore and La Bourboule.

Fabulous location at a very reasonable price with skiing, hiking, swimming, mountain biking and road cycling more or less from the door. The bargain price was because it needed total renovation. Of course we completely under-estimated the cost and time to do the renovations but in the end we were very pleased with how the house turned out.
Extremely peaceful, great views, sunny garden & great location. But Tim, the British carpenter who did most of the work, did a terrific job. The Oak floors, doors and skirtings fitted throughout give the house a great feel.
Ce gîte est vraiment super. Des très bons moments. Le vin chaud de Mont Dore, le patin à glace, ski de fond au lac de Guery. Super!
This cottage is really great and here are some highlights: the mulled wine at Mont Dore, ice skating and cross country skiing at Lake Guery. Great!
Great location less than 1 hour from Clermont Ferrand (mainline train station and airport) and around 2 hours from Limoge airport.
In the winter sledging, cross country skiing, snow shoeing and dog-sledding are all available in Murat le Quaire. Nearby Le Mont Dore also offers ice-skating & ten pin bowling.
And there's a fabulous brand new indoor swimming pool in La Bourboule less than 2km from the house.
In the summer there is a plan d'Eau swimming and fishing lake just a short walk from the house + three large lakes nearby. The walking, mountain biking & road cycling in the area are all superb. There is also a golf course & a brilliant high ropes course in Le Mont Dore. La Bourboule has a large park with amazing playgrounds, crazy golf, train rides etc for children.
Restaurants: The local restaurant, Le Relais de la Toinette, just 50 metres from the house is excellent & great value for money. La Bourboule (2 km away) has around 20 restaurants (including the excellent L'Amuse Bouche which is the best in the area but still great value, bars, lots of shops & even a casino.
