Great quality bike rental available on site - www.velo-plus.net
We left the Lune Valley in the UK in 2005 to look for new challenges. Robert was running his own building company and Anna was working at Lancaster University, so if was a huge gamble to just go and see what was out there, preferably somewhere a little sunnier!
As well opening Las Razes to guests from all over the world during the summer months; both of us keep busy. Robert carries out renovations (and re-roofs) many large stone houses in the region. Anna edits and writes for an English speaking magazines which cover a large area of S W France.
We have a total of 5 children and two grandchildren still living in the UK. We don't go back too often as we find it all a bit too noisy, crowded and quick. We look forward, instead, to our family coming out to our 'patch of France'.
Living with us at Las Razes we have our two cats, Tilly and Saffron who enjoy a wonderful life of lounging and hunting. Then there is our very special little rescue dog 'Mimi' who is a hairy little poppet.
Also in a cottage on site is Tom our son and his girlfriend Katherine. Tom is a cycle mechanic and a good one to talk to if you are interested in cycling in the are. They also run a bike hire business for local hotel and gites.
Anna Atkinson purchased this farmhouse in 2005
Earlier explorations in France had convinced us that this region was for us, it has a beauty and charm that outstrips most of the better known 'holiday areas' we had visited. We had worked out that we wanted to be somewhere close to the triangle that is created by the villages of Montcuq, Lauzerte and Montaigu de Quercy as this offered the rolling hills, woods and valleys that made us feel particularly at home.
When we first saw Las Razes it was in need of a great deal of care and attention, but we could immediately see the potential in what had orginally been an old farmsted.
Set in about 6 acres Las Razes also housed an tumbled down ruin which had been the very first farmhouse on the site and was in a state of complete ruin, it had such a lovely position that we just knew that this was one building that we had to rescue and make into our home.
The views were wonderfully relaxing and the whole place had a lovely atmosphere and this is something that we were not the only ones to notice, many of our visitors have commented that there is a tranquility here that cannot simply be explained by its rural and peaceful location.
Las Razes will be a virtual lifetime's project and fascination!
Brilliant place, view, well equipped ( thanks for extra saucepans) lovely gardens and pool. Pool was too deep for littler children but they loved the lakes and river close by and these provided a good excursion out. Also older children loved adventure park. Pool was great for adults and older kids.
We also enjoyed trips out - lots to do!
The property is sited in a wonderful location with great views over the valley.
The property itself is extensive with a very large open plan living space and a large adjacent indoor games room. Off this area is an outdoor games area and a large fully equipped kitchen with an island food preparation area.
The ensuite bedrooms are comfortable and sensibly positioned close to the nicely sized heated swimming pool.
The owners are close by and were eager to ensure our comfort.
Overall, my friends and me had a great time visiting the local sights and then chilling out around and in the property. It is wonderful place and I cannot recommend it highly enough either as a large family get together or a group of friends.
We were three families and the house worked perfectly for us - masses of space, a huge indoor area, lovely pool and so nice to have different places around the house to eat.
House is situated in a beautiful spot - so quiet and peaceful with wonderful views overlooking the rolling hills.
Anna was always on hand for help and advice but very unobtrusive.
Would highly recommend
We went as an extended family group of 15 youngest 8 months eldest was 86!! The grounds are well laid out with plenty of places to sit enabling you to sit all together or sit quiet round the side of the house. Inside there is plenty of room to sit and loads of space so we never felt crowded. A large dining area and further on the snooker table and a further area with a tv and sofas. The kitchen is huge, 2 fridges and a freezer. Because we had 5 children 4 and under we spent a lot of time round the pool area as the kids were having a great time. The pool is below the terrace its a good size and offers great views over the surrounding countryside plenty of sunbeds, shade and sun. We did a few trips out to local villages which are pretty Lauzerte is only 10 minutes away on top of a hill worth a visit. We also visited the lake at montaigu de quercy a good day out if you have kids. There is plenty of information in the house of places to go. The bedrooms are all good whether a couple or a family of four there is one to suit.
The hosts Anna and Rob are located in a property next door. They are good hosts make you feel welcome and are on hand if you need any help or advice.
All in all it is a great place to go as a large family or a group of friends. We all had a great time!!!
Thanks Anna and Rob
We booked Las Razes because we wanted to bring our children and grandchildren away to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary. The house and rooms are beautifully laid out with ample space to be together or find some peace apart. There are several places to sit and soak up the weather and country side, indeed there are 3 different seating areas for the whole family to sit together. Our days were spent at markets, small surrounding towns, kayaking and relaxing by the pool. The weather was faultless, so good that we were entertained every morning whilst breakfasting (fresh croissants from the boulangerie down the road) by the French National Parachute Team practising at the nearby airfield.
The swimming pool is fantastic and can be seen from the above balconies, the grandchildren had hours of fun in and out of the water, darts, jigsaws, board games, table tennis and snooker are all there to be played.
Anna and Robert are there when you need them and invisible when not, they're full of local knowledge and tips for days out. We couldn't recommend the property highly enough if you're looking for a large retreat that appeals to everyone.
Some of the photos do not do Las Razes justice; the facilities are great, with a good size kitchen and lots of fridge and freezer capacity. We all liked the ensuite bedrooms, and the variety of outside sitting areas. There are three choices of dining areas, and lovely views. The owners were nowhere to be seen, unless you needed them - very friendly and helpful, especially with local information. Will definitely be back!
Las Razes is situated close to the tiny village of Touffailles, which has a small shop, boulangerie, fishing pond, children's play area and tennis court. The village is situated in one of many beautiful valleys in this area - with an abundance of oak woods and fruit and flower growing. The area is famous for its production of melons, plums, nectarines, grapes, sunflowers and cherries.
The medieval villages of Lauzerte (often referred to as the Toledo of Quercy) and Montaigu de Quercy (site of 12th century castle and with lovely bathing lake/water sports) are both about 8km away and offer delightful places to visit along with a range of local services and restaurants/bars and local markets.
Montcuq with its famous 12th century tower, exquisite bathing lake and colourful Sunday market is about 14 km away, whilst Cahors and the surrounding vineyards make a lovely day trip. Moissac, a bustling town with lively weekend markets and famous Abbey and Cloisters are about 20 minutes drive away. Other places worth a visit include Penne and Tournon D’Agenais, Agen, Montauban, Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Puy-L’Eveque, the caves at Pech Merle and St. Cirq Lapopie.
