Casa dei Papaveri has been recently renovated to a high standard. The comfortable accommodation is complemented by vaulted ceilings and typical characteristics of an Italian villa in Abruzzo. Sitting in its own ground behind locked gates, the vast terrace offers a great area for relaxing and admiring the panoramic views. Dine al fresco in the evening lit by the romantic lights of Capestrano or watch the sunrise over the Gran Sasso mountains. Two sets of patio tables and chairs and deckchairs are available for your use as well as a large BBQ. The kitchen/diner is fully equipped with a large cooker, microwave and fridge/freezer. The sitting room has two comfortable large leather sofas together with Sky TV, DVD player, CD player, books and board games. Each of the three double bedrooms has its own bathroom or shower room. One double has a single sofa bed and a twin bedroom leading off suitable for families.
Capestrano is located very conveniently for sightseeing, hiking, mountain bilking, paragliding, diving, canoeing, swimming and pony trekking. There is a public pool with good facilities only 3km away and a riding stables nearby. There is a wolf sanctuary just outside Popoli, promoting Abruzzo's deserved title of the 'greenest region of Europe'.
Piazza del Mercato is within walking distance of the villa and has two grocery stores, butchers, chemist and florist. There are mobile fruit and veg stalls most days and a fish van on Wednesdays. There is a weekly market on a Friday.
The Piazza also has a Gelateria and Bar which serves food and there are several good restaurants only a short drive away. All details of these facilities are listed in the Information Guide at the villa.
Fantastic accommodations, awesome views and great location. Thanks for making your house feel like home.
Lovely villa in a stunning location. Homely and comfortable, we have stayed here twice now and love its location. A nice easy drive from Pescara, which is one of the better Italian airports with easy and helpful car rental companies. The House sits on the hill opposite Capestrano which is a lovely village to explore with helpful and friendly locals. A short drive or bike ride to the local outdoor pool with restaurant makes this an ideal spot for relaxation or a base for exploring L'Aquila and Abruzzo region. The local wine and food is excellent and there's enough information on where to go and what to see within the Villa. Maggie the owner is most helpful and has never failed to respond to any of our enquiries in a timely and efficient manner. If there's one thing to note for the potential visitor its that, to get great views like this you have to be up a hill and whilst this is not a problem for the young and fair of heart an elderly person may struggle. We have found it easier to leave the car at the bottom of the hill as the turns and steepness make it an exhilarating hill climb in a hire car! Having said that we are in our fifties and had no problem walking up and down with cases and shopping. The walk into Capestrano is not as challenging for your daily tipple or ice cream. There's a decent supermarket in nearby Bussi or an excellent larger one in Pescara, just next to the airport.
Very well-equipped, clean and comfortable house with stunning views on the outskirts of the village of Capestrano in Abruzzo. We stayed at the end of March and had lovely sunny weather - 25 degrees with a slight hillside breeze - for the whole week. As the house is perched on a hillside, the drive up is a little hairy but it is manageable and is quite normal for a house in the Italian countryside. Capestrano is a sleepy village which lies between three of the most spectacular ranges of the Appenines and is within easy reach (40 mins) of the Adriatic coast for a day out. Our kids enjoyed walking up to the village gelataria for ice-cream. The owner was very helpful with any queries and provided a very comprehensive guide to all the features of the house and to the must-see attractions of the local Abruzzo area. The only drawback is that the walks up to the house and to the village are steep so would not be suitable for very elderly or the infirm. We will remember sitting on the terrace listening to the bells, sipping local wine (cheap and delicious) and watching moonrises over the mountains for a very long time. I hope we get back there some day.
Great location, although approaching the house by car is a bit demanding (last 100 m - narrow, steep road among houses and walls with hairpin bends). The house is very big, very well equipped and very clean. Views from the terrace - stunning, all day long. Perfect contact with the owner. The only little nuisance of our stay were little flies causing itchy skin irritations. The surroundings are really beautiful and not crowded by tourists, hiking in Gran Sasso and Maiella was wonderful.Definitely recommended!
We had a great week in the fantastic nature of the Abruzzes in one of the sweetest villages-Capestrano. The stone villa has a very good standard with all necessary comfort. It's a very charming, cosy and authentic house. Bathrooms and kitchen as well as all the bedrooms are in very good condition. We especially enjoyed the calmity, the smell of lilac and our chilling cave bedroom. Everybody who is into cosy, rustic houses in italian nature will love the Casa dei Papaveri. It's a great area for hiking and simply for enjoying the nature. A charming place about 10 min from Capestrano is Bussi sul Tirino with delicious pizzas, hearty people and lively green quaint alleys. This region is so chilling - an unexpected holiday highlight.
If you are looking to escape the stresses of life for a few days then Capestrano in Abruzzo is the ideal getaway offering a taste of the real Italy away from the usual tourist hotspots. Capestrano is a pretty hilltop town overlooking the Tirino valley surrounded by the mountains of the Gran Sasso, ideally situated for exploring the National Parks or the sandy beaches of the Adriatic. Capestrano offers plenty of historic interest in its medieval and renaissance architecture and medieval fortifications can still be seen in the ruins of the old city wall. Piccolomini Castle is the highest point in Capestrano and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. There are 21 ski slopes in the area within easy reach. Roccarasso is the largest, host to European competitions, and includes facilities such as an ice rink and health centre. Tourist attractions nearby include Roccacalascio and Castel del Monte where 'The American' was filmed starring George Clooney. Various local festivals throughout summer months such as Chick Pea festival in Navelli and Lentil festival in Santa Stefano. Sulmona hosts a jousting competition in August. Various local markets offer a wide range of fresh fruit and veg, jewellery, shoes and clothing. There really is something in this area for everyone.
