Les Pierres Blanches (White Stones) is a 2 bedroomed gite in its own private grounds with swimming pool.
It is a spacious, traditional Charentaise house (95m2) renovated to include all the modern comforts and necessities, without losing its original character.
There is a large gated entrance with ample room for parking.
The pool and pool garden area are totally cordoned off, in line with French legal requirements.
Les Pierres Blanches:
The two bedrooms are on the 1st floor.
At ground floor level there is a large sitting room with beautiful exposed stone walls.
The kitchen/dining is a separate room and this has a door to the covered patio area which also has a table and chairs for dining outdoors.
The bbq is on the patio but can easily be moved within the garden area to suit your needs.
The shower room and toilet are on the ground floor.
Our favourite days out:
La Palmyre Zoo, Chize Zoo, Aquarium La Rochelle, Atlantis indoor aqua park St. Jean D'angely, Antilles indoor aqua park Jonzac. Favourite beaches: Chatelaillon Plage, Fouras, La Grande Cote, La Palmyre, Royan and the many smaller beaches in between, Cognac playground, minigolf, park, Charente river. Thors playground and lake. Les Touches de Perigney playground and minigolf. Many Cognac distillery tours / vine walks and of course, tasting. Local food markets. Brocantes (selling everything from 2nd hand toys to furniture). Roman Amphitheatre Saintes. Chateau des Enigmas Pons. Outdoor festivals and theatre.
We moved to the Charente Maritime from Ireland in Summer 2007. Our children were then aged between 4 and 8yrs and thankfully, they easily settled in.
They were speaking French fluently by that December, probably because they were truly thrown in at the deep end, going to the local school (taking the bus each morning and evening), dining in the school canteen and being involved in lots of local sports clubs. It was much harder for us adults of course.....
Mrs. Gráinne Hanley purchased this house in 2007
We initially bought the house as a holiday home for ourselves and very swiftly decided to bite the bullet and move, for a year or two, just to try something different. The years flew by, we fell in love with here and we ended up staying.
After some years, the opportunity arose for us to purchase the adjoining part of what was originally one large house. We moved next door and now run our original house (complicated!!) as a gite.
Above is a photo of Christmas in the gite.
As I was unable to host, Nanny & Grandad arrived to save the day. They stayed in the gite and we had a lovely day “visiting” and dining next door!
This coming Summer will be our 4th year running the property as a gite, and we have truly enjoyed the experience. We have had guests from France, Ireland, UK, Netherlands, Canada, and all a joy to have (seriously!).
I look forward to welcoming guests again this year but, wherever you choose, I wish you a wonderful break away.
Perfect place for relaxing. We spent two wonderful weeks here and would have loved to stay longer. Les Pierres Blanche is a very comfortable home in a most peaceful area, very quiet, but with lots of things to do and attractions to visit. One can't possible manage to see all during one vacation. And we always loved to come back to the house or spend the day there. The garden, pool and Lounge were great to just hang around and read or play or swim. We loved the table tennis in the garage and tried out the bikes, which was fun and is safe on the small roads around the hamlet, where you can be undisturbed between the fields and woods. We explored several attractions along the coast, like Ile d'Oleron, La Rochelle, Royan, the La Palmyre Zoo, but also liked the rural towns like Aulnay (beautiful church!) and St. Savinien, where we rented a boat and explored the river Charente, which I can not recommend highly enough. So much fun and a lovely experience.
Finally, the owner of the property went out of her way to make sure that everything worked for us, was easy to contact from the beginning and provided loads of information before our trip and also at the house. She gave us a warm welcome and had so many things at hand like towels, sheets, dishwasher tabs, inflatables for the pool, that we could travel light. Thank you for a great holiday!
As we had been to this house a year ago, we were very excited to be going back to such a lovely place. We did not have the worry of how nice the house/hosts would be & so started out our journey feeling relaxed & ready for a super holiday.
We certainly were not disappointed. Everything was as we had remembered & still very clean, well maintained & exactly as described on the website.
My favourite area is on the terrace outside the kitchen door. We spent many hours sitting/reading/eating here & used the supplied bbq too. We had table tennis competitions & put up a badminton net in the garden & by the end of the holiday the children were very good at both games. The house sits in some amazing countryside & we found some new cycle routes, where you could go for miles without seeing another vehicle. Of course, we used the pool too, both for swimming in & for sunbathing & playing on the inflatables.
We mostly ate meals at the house as it is so easy (a short drive) to get to the local supermarkets to stock up. Also, we like being "at home" in the evenings as it is so cosy & comfortable & there are many books/dvd's and games to use there.
We did venture out to a few new places. Saint-Jean-d'Angely, Saintes & Rochefort are all beautiful towns & especially interesting on market days. Our two best days out were to Bordeaux & Futuroscope, which were each about an hour & a half away. Bordeaux is the most amazing city & the open top bus tour is a must. There is a fabulous shopping street there too. Futuroscope is a theme park with a difference. It is not full of roller coasters, but lots of 3D/4D simulator rides with various themes. They are housed in very weird & wonderful buildings & set in beautiful landscaped grounds with lakes and waterfalls. There are other play areas/water games & the "Dances with Robots" ride was a real favourite with the children. The light/sound/water show in the evening is also worth staying on for.
All of these places were in Grainne's information book & she supplied lots of leaflets for other places too. As there is wi-fi in the house there is also the option to get up to the minute information there.
As our two weeks came to an end we really did not want to go home. It is the sort of place where you could stay forever!
I want to end by saying how lovely Grainne is. She is there when you need her but never intrudes into your holiday. We love her & her family to bits & hope that we can keep in touch & maybe visit again soon.
We received lots of tips and advice from Grainne in advance of our drive from Scotland. Grainne was a great host with invaluable local knowledge that we put to best use. The cottage was comfortable and stylish with the private pool and wifi the key essentials for our 2 teenage kids. The cottage itself is set in a beautiful and picturesque rural area in a small hamlet which is only a short drive to local towns /supermarkets etc. It is ideally positioned for easy access ( typically 40 min drives) to a wide choice of activities to suit all manner of tastes. All in all a great rental experience under the stewardship of a kind and houghtful host. Highly recommended by the Cameron family.
The gite and gardens are lovely and we spent a fabulous week here. Our 9 year old boys loved the pool and table tennis and we used the owners bikes to cycle round the area. The owner was really helpful and provided lots of information and suggestions on things to do. Le Roty is very quiet so perfect for relaxing and there are larger towns nearby for shops and places to eat although you do need to drive to them. Would highly recommend as a great base to explore the region. The Kelly family.
We arrived at the beautiful iron gates after following the easy directions provided by the owner. We drove straight in and were immediately delighted by the gorgeous looking traditional, shuttered house, in its well maintained grounds, that stood before us. A cheerful "hello" over the garden fence was followed by the appearance of Grainne, the owner. She was extreemely welcoming and gave us a tour of the house and provided us with loads of information about things to do/local area/beaches/restaurants/emergency help etc. Grainne lives in the house next door with her lovely family, but you would not know they were there. We had complete privacy, but with the knowledge that someone was there should we need anything. We soon settled in and found everything to be clean and exactly as described in the website listing. Our children were desperate to try the pool so immediately changed for a dip. The pool towels were provided, as well as inflatables and there were pool loungers. The pool is not heated but it was blissful to get into during the lovely hot days. We found that life at the house was so relaxing and comfortable that we didn't really need to go far over the next few days. The children enjoyed the swing in the garden and we all played table tennis in one of the outbuildings, which also contained the bikes and of course, we all swam. The house is in a small hamlet, surrounded by farmland, so it was very safe to go for long bike rides passing fields and fields of sunflowers and grape vines. Idyllic! There is even a bread van which visits most mornings for fresh baguettes and croissants etc. A supermarket and small town are only a 7 minute drive away, or a bigger town 15 minutes away. We did venture to a nearby grape vine/swing golf place and bought a few bottles (!) and we also went to an excellent adventure game/quiz based on the story of The Three Muskateers, at a chateau near Pons. The aquarium at La Rochelle and the harbour and restaurants there were also a lovely day out. All of these attractions were recommended in Grainne's guide. However, when we went out, all we wanted to do was to get back to the house and the pool and relax again. It really was perfect and felt just like home. We have already recommended this property to everyone and we are definately going back next year. Thank you so much to Grainne and family (including Scally) for making us feel so welcome and for ensuring our stay was a "dream holiday".
Le Roty is a small hamlet surrounded by vineyards, fields of sunflowers and small forests.
Matha, 10 minutes drive, is our nearest town which has a tourist office, restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, small covered market and many other small enterprises.
As we are in the Cognac region, there are numerous Cognac and Pineau houses in the area that welcome visitors for tours and tastings.
The larger historical town of St. Jean d'Angely is a 15 minute drive. It has a large park with childrens playground, paddling pool, lake with pédalos, green areas for football, volleyball and outdoor table tennis, crazy golf, cafe serving light snacks. There is also an indoor aqua park, go-karting, a large choice of restaurants, many small boutiques etc.
Slightly further again (approx. 45k) are the towns of Cognac, Saintes, Angouleme, Niort. All worth a visit for their historical value and beauty.
Beaches are approx. one hour from us. There are a huge choice of magnificent beaches, beaches by towns, by forests, secluded, by cliffs, wild, calm etc.!
One of our best days are to the beach early, picnic, or lunch in a beachside restaurant, back home for late afternoon, have a dip and relax by the pool, finishing the day with a bbq.
The beautiful town of La Rochelle is one hour away to the Northwest and Bordeaux is a 90 minute drive to the Southwest.
