About the property

6 Bedrooms, 6.5 Baths, Sleeps 12

Experience Santa Fe from the inside out! Enjoy the artists and the stories that make Santa Fe the ‘City Different’, the mystique and the beauty that has put Santa Fe on the short list of the most desirable destinations in the world! De la Peña house is in the cultural center of Santa Fe. Walk to Museums of NM, Canyon Road galleries, cafes, Saint Francis Basilica, Santa Fe Plaza or along the famed canal, the Acequia Madre.

Old Hacienda ambiance offers a feeling of New Mexico enchantment; Hi-tech amenities are juxtaposed with thick adobe walls, outdoor fireplaces and chile ristras create a rich Santa Fe experience. Welcome retreats, reunions, couples, business travelers, families, kids and pets!

For the art savvy and/or collector, the estate offers select opportunities to view and live with certain notable originals from the collections of O’Keeffe, Hockney, Warhol, Kahlo, etc.; bicycles are available to tour Santa Fe (we have most of our best things stuffed into 1.9 square miles!); and we love special requests: Chef’s, tour & adventure guides, and other concierge services are available directly by phone and via our app which is included in your reservation!

The Story:

De la Pena is the only remaining hacienda in Santa Fe. Set in the midst of the historic east side, this 6 bedroom, 9000 sq ft. estate has been the passageway for many of the most notable figures in the contemporary ascendence of the region. Ansel Adams has a series of photos which he took of the home that are still here! Also, Georgia O’Keefe, D.H. Lawrence, Willa Cather, Mary Austin, and others have stayed here as they discovered Santa Fe. The story begins nearly 200 years ago when the original structure was built, Sergeant de La Pena of the Mexican army became the first notable owner of a much smaller home in 1845. This era saw many traditional features built into the home. Notice the low archways: to keep marauding horsemen of yesteryear from entering! By the time Frank Applegate acquired the property after the turn of the century, there was already a legendary status to the home which was accented by a feature in House and Garden magazine in 1929! The estate has also been featured in Architectural Digest since then.

The so-called ‘Father of Folk-Art’, Applegate was host to many of these young artists who were making history as they went! He also put his artistry to work in expanding and creating the home you see today. As we have recently had another turn-of-the-century, the estate endures with many of the authentic features intact! De La Pena is a grand adobe structure set amidst gardens and vast lawns, arching fruit trees surround, and a clay tennis court!

Reviewer Comments:

The house is large, gracious and accommodated our 12 member family very well. The house and grounds were beautifully cared for and it was a pleasure and privilege to stay there. Although in so many ways this was an ideal experience there were two drawback. The wifi wasn't accessible throughout the house and there was an issues of a leaking pipe that prevented using one of the bedroom showers for the last two days. Any other issues were promptly attended to and the staff was very responsive, friendly and informative.

Reviewer Comments:

Fantastic time, house exceeded already high expectations... so large easy to be lost, so many places to hang out inside & out,.fantastic to be in genuinely historic house & to see its age and construction in curvy door frames & thick walls.. 20-30 minute walk to plaza on Canyon rd w. art galleries, or along more shaded street. Sleeps 12 but tight seating 9 adults for dinners. The house is so big and hard to describe we were lost even after two tours. Rooms are quite different so it helps to have a description and think about who goes where ahead of time. We couldn't picture from earlier reviews. 1) MBR main floor large space with platform where shepherd slept with sheep in old times. lots of space not much comfy seating tho there are chairs. This is room described as having hallway trough it. Privacy improved with Indian carved screens betwen room and hall. Only windows quite high. Huge bathroom, two HUGE walk in closets, long tiled tub + shower and lovely garden off bathroom 2)2nd MBR big suite in own wing. Nice size bedroom w. sofa & chairs + sitting room w. reclining couch, small dining table. Opens to gardens. 3) downstairs bedroom smallish (compared to others) adjacent shower as I recall in hall w. washer & dryer 4-5) Upstairs 2 bedrooms each w. own bathroom and really full living room and the big porch w. lounge bed.. would make a fantastic suite for a family to have as its own retreat One bath has tub but no shower, 6) up different stairs a crows nest kind of BR. Big windows all around, very light and lovely - bed, sofa, desk (nice in May, don't know about hot summer) This is room with bathroom downstairs off weight room.. can close off. LOTS of yard and outdoor seating areas.spacious outdoors great for our big dog.

Reviewer Comments:

Our group of 6 couples thought the de la Pena estate more than exceeded our expectations for a long weekend in Santa Fe. It was beautifully furnished in southwestern style with incredible outwork all around. fresh flowers were in many of the rooms. Each bedroom was equipped with bottles of water. The kitchen and bathrooms were amply stocked. The house was big with so many rooms to enjoy that we did not have time to appreciate it all. But since we liked it so much we decided it would be more fun to cook in or order in. There were a few glitches with the lights, and some of the fixtures in the bathrooms showed their age but did not impact our stay at all. We were overwhelmed with how well suited the house was for our group.

We had a beautiful wedding in the backyard and there were enough rooms and bathrooms for our immediate family to stay with us there for several nights. The house has a lot of items that we utilized for our reception, like candles, a gas grill, dishes, decorative wood bowls, etc. The garden made a lovely backdrop for our ceremony and everyone was wowed by it's grandeur and magic.

Reviewer Comments:

Totally unique, historic home close to everything in Santa Fe. Our group(8 adults) was able to come together for dinners and chats while at the same time doing what each enjoyed - walking, biking, hiking, shopping or just relaxing. Plumbing in the house (baths particularly) could use some update and guests should be advised that there is no A/C. Fans in every room are needed.
