Nazaré is a picturesque and charming village with a population of about 13,000. Historically, the main activity and source of income of the village was the fishing industry, an industry that is very present to this day, as visitors will see through the numerous lines of sun drying fish along the beach.
Today tourism is undoubtedly the key industry in Nazaré. Given the vast expanses of beautiful beaches and picturesque views of the cliff, it is no surprise that Nazareth has such a great appeal. Simultaneously with the growth of tourism, a lot of cafes, bars and restaurants have sprung up throughout the village. With a wide choice of restaurants along the sea front, visitors can indulge in fresh fish and seafood and enjoy magnificent views.
Nazaré is known for its history and for its strong bond with all that is traditional. Strolling through the labyrinth of beautiful cross streets that make up the heart of the city, visitors will find local ladies dressed in traditional costumes - black skirts, which corresponds to the widow's dress or the seven skirts that matches the festive costume of the Nazarene woman. On some occasions, local fishermen also wear their traditional clothing, ceroulas and fisherman's shirt to the chessman.
