Overview

About the property

2 reception rooms, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 2nd WC, sleeps 4/6

This tastefully renovated stone cottage in the village of Benoisey, with magnificent views, has been sympathetically restored by its owners and retains its French character, whilst containing all modcons. The kitchen/diner with its original flagstone floor and woodburner is fully equipped, and there is a separate utility room with WC. The sitting room has a magnificent table seating up to 10 as well as a second woodburner, TV, DVD and leather sofa bed. Upstairs there are 2 large bedrooms, both with double bed, wardrobe and dressing table. The 2nd bedroom with its fantastic exposed beams, also has a double futon, and there is a travel cot available if required. The upstairs bathroom has bath (with overhead shower), basin and toilet. There are 2 vaulted cellars and a large patio/ seating area with a barbecue and plenty of garden furniture. In addition, there are many games available, including boule. The garden includes flower borders, shrubs and fruit trees and borders onto farmland.

Built in 1840, La Cheneviere is a traditional French country cottage, which has been tastefully restored by its owners, since they bought it in 2004. It is close to Montbard where the TGV stops but it is a very quiet location. La Cheneviere is very much a home from home, where you can relax and 'escape from it all', reassured that the owners have thought of most things you may require- be it a sunbed in Summer or a sledge in Winter! The truly spectacular views, together with the well considered (part-covered) outside space means that relaxing on the patio or in the garden during the warmer months is sublime. The Tour of Burgundy by cycle runs along the Burgundy canal for 580 km. The canal is just at the bottom of the valley from Benoisey. http://www.le-tour-de-bourgogne-a-velo.com/ An article about cycling in the area around Benoisey is at http://experiencefrancebybike.com/bicycling-the-burgundy-canal-for-100-euro-a-day/ The welcoming atmosphere of the house, with woodburners in both reception rooms, means that it can be equally enjoyed in Winter, especially, perhaps, after a bracing walk along the Canal or across the snowy hills!

All this adds up to providing you with a holiday home that, despite the plethora of visitor attractions in the local vicinity, you will always be happy to return home. As many of our visitors will testify!

About Judy Burvill

We have lived and worked round Rolvenden in Kent, England for many years. We have a family of 4 children and 3 grandchildren who all love the fact that we have a lovely house in Burgundy that they can enjoy!

Judy Burvill purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Judy Burvill chose Benoisey

It was in 2004 that we decided to look around for a property to buy in France. La Cheneviére was the first place we looked at and I fell in love with it immediately. We looked at other properties but there was no point! I had seen the house I wanted! The view was immediately stunning and the house had so much potential even though there was only one light and socket in each of the downstairs rooms, a basin and toilet facilities in one part of the front room and an attic space that was pretty derelict and coated with spider webs!We wanted to keep the French character of the house and spent the next 7 years renovating it.

What makes this cottage unique

Everyone who sees our house loves it. We hope we have created a house which feels French. It is comfortable both indoors and outside on the patio. There are numerous activities to enjoy and places to visit, lots of beautiful villages to explore and places to eat typically French fare but, after trips out, our visitors have always been content to come back 'home' and relax! A glass or two of Burgundy or some Cremant de Bourgogne can be enjoyed in the heart of French Burgundy!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Judy,

I am so pleased to be able to feed back to you. We all just LOVED your cottage. Firstly, we think you have done a wonderful restoration. It has been so sympathetically done and everything seemed just right and not out of place. I did say in the Visitors Book that we have restored a couple of old houses and know very well that photos of the ‘Before’ don’t adequately show how really terrible the places were, and how amazingly transformed they have been.

We were very comfortable and really think that nothing could be done to add to the comfort or charm of the cottage. We were delighted to find a baguette on top of the wall one morning, courtesy of the local Boulanger. This occurred on 3 occasions but we didn’t ever see him until we were leaving – and we saw his van just down the road. I jumped out of our car with a handful of coins to pay him – and then proceeded to have the most amusing conversation. He spoke no English, and I had my limited schoolgirl French. I’d chat and point down the road to your house, and he’d nod and smile and say ‘Complique’! Eventually, we gave up – and it was only after that that I realized it was probably the other Boulanger who’d been leaving the bread. Anyway, when you see him, please thank him on our behalf.

Probably what impressed us most, and what we could feel, was that this was a cottage that was well used and well loved by you, your family and friends. We have since stayed in a couple of cottages but neither has had the ambience of your maison.

Merci! It was wonderful, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Our only regret was that we weren’t there longer as we tended to visit places in a rush and not give them the time due to them.

Many thanks Judy.

Notes:
Children have loved staying here but there are 16 steps down from the house to the patio so very young children may need supervision. The table tennis table, dart board and various games have been appreciated by children and adults. The barbecue is used on a regular basis as are the sunbeds and garden dining furniture! Being in the middle of France, there are no beaches! However, there is a swimming complex at Montbard with indoor and outdoor pools as well as a paddling pool for young children. There is a large lake with supervised swimming and a play area for small children and a park at Venarey which is 10 minutes away. Also a man-made beach with canoes and water sports at the Lac de Pont near Semur, only about 10 miles away.

Always again!

  • 5 of 5

Great house in an very small and quiet idyllic French village. We spend a few days here in April and it was amazing! The house was beautifully renovated and and furnished with lots of taste and tons of great little details. Beautiful views in each direction of the house. Two wood stoves for cozy evenings. Very well equipped kitchen. Everything you might need is there. This is a great place to get away to finish a writing project, hang out with good friends or to bring a family. There's plenty of room! We would very much recommend and love to return in the summer or autumn time to also enjoy the terrace and the garden. We would come back, whenever we have the chance.

Owner's Response: So pleased you loved it as much as I thought you would. The photos on the website don't do the view justice do they! Nor can they capture the ambience of the house and area! You are welcome back any time; although it is rather a long way from Mexico!

Nice stay/ Très bon séjour

  • 5 of 5

We spent an excellent stay in Benoisey. The house is very nice et comfortable. It is not far from Semur en Auxois, Montbart or Alésia, an excellent point of departure for visiting all these cities. We had good contacts with the owner , she sent us all the informations we needed to organise our stay.I really advice this house for people who like calm and nature, the village is really quiet .

A Beautiful Place to Enjoy Burgundy

  • 5 of 5

Truly, your cottage, La Cheneviere, was our "Home Away from Home". We could not have felt more at home. Thank you for all the information on the house and the area. That is so thoughtful and so appreciated. La Cheneviere was cozy and so comfortable. Our favorite moments were experiencing the evenings on the back patio in the Burgundy countryside while relaxing with some wine and cheese . The sights...white Charolais cattle grazing on green pastures, barge boats moving in the Burgundy canal, trains hurling down the valley tracks, cyclists peddling along the Canal, farmers hustling to get the hay cut and baled, birds and bees flying and buzzing across the yard from fruit tree to tree and flower to flower...all the while we sip wine and snack on cheese; can life get any better? The sounds...the birds tweeting and the bees buzzing, the trains whirling down the valley, cattle mooing, tractors motoring down the steep hill and the silence between those moments. The smells...fresh cut hay and clean country air and the best was aroma of fresh baguettes from the Boulanger who delivered right to the door. We had a good Dinner at Le Trianon D"Alesia and a better dinner at Le Bistrot de Louise in Venarey. La Grange in Flavigny Sur Ozerain provided us a wonderful farm fresh lunch. We set our car GPS to keep us on the small country roads and we felt as if we were the only ones driving in Burgundy! We loved La Cheneviere, the Burgundy countryside, the food and the people. The best thing I can say is...we will be back for a longer stay!

Peacefull place in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We have had a great stay here and, in fact, my wife and I feel that this is the best place we have stayed since leaving our island home in May. This really reminds us of our little bit of heaven back in the US ( except your place is just a bit older!) You have done a great job with you remodel! A truly wonderful spot. So much to see around the area and to do it via bike path along the canal was fantastic. Just sitting on the deck taking in the beautiful view of the rolling landscape was magical. We only wished the Wifi was working, but found connection in hotel in small town not far away to check email and skype with family. Thanks, Judy for a wonderful stay. I would highly recommend this place and hope to come back some day.

Owner's Response: Jeff: I am so pleased that you liked the cottage so much. We agree that it is a little bit of heaven! Even after 10 years we still love going back, spring, summer, autumn and winter. Regarding the Wifi, it is a Pay as You Go so it just needed to be plugged in and activated by phoning an automated service. I am glad that you found a hotspot in Montbard! And a drink in the Cafe at the station there is always a pleasant way to spend a little while! Thank you for your kind words. Judy

La Cheneviere is a peaceful, traditional detached stone cottage in Benoisey, a typical Burgundian village (nr Montbard). . Situated on the edge of a valley, it offers spectacular views over the Burgundy Canal, the River Brenne and the surrounding countryside. The railway line with the TGV runs through the valley in the distance, parallel to the road, the canal and the river. Benoisey has the advantage of being close to Montbard where the TGV stops. This means that there is easy access from or to Paris, Dijon and other places with a railway station.Car hire is available in Montbard if you decide to arrive by train. Benoisey is a perfect base for both walkers, cyclists and wine lovers, with walks and cycle rides in the Burgundian countryside and along the Burgundy canal available from the doorstep. The famous vineyards around Beaune are to the south and Chablis to the north of the cottage. The medieval towns of Semur-en-Auxois, Noyers and Flavigny (where the film 'Chocolat' was filmed) are all within easy reach, about half an hour away, as are Epoisses, famous for one of the smelliest (and tastiest!) cheeses in France and Alesia, with its huge statue of the Gaul, Vercingétorix. The historic Abbey at Fontenay is only 10 minutes away. The towns of Montbard and Venarey have all shopping facilities but fresh bread can be enjoyed daily as a mobile boulanger visits Benoisey every day, including Sunday.
