About Debra DeWald

John & I live in southern California. We both grew up in the Midwest and love the change of seasons. We like the opportunity to travel back to New England and enjoy the fall foliage and snow that we don’t get to see much of where we currently live. We are both avid travelers and utilize VRBO both in the US as well as Europe.

Relaxing wonderful home

  • 4 of 5

This is a beautiful home with ample parking, a great view of the lake, at the end of the street. We went in late December and it was quiet and beautiful. Debra was available for questions we had and the internet, electricity, kitchen appliances worked great. The cooking utensils made it fun and it was perfect for a quiet family gathering. I even love the board games she had available. We initially had trouble finding the thermostats in the bedroom, but once we found them, we had heating in the kids' bedroom. The heating in the master bedroom was broken. The fireplace we discovered was also not working, and Debra was helpful in having her neighbor take a look while we were out. However, it needed more maintenance, and I would have loved it if it was checked out prior to our visit. Otherwise, it was an amazing, five-star stay and I would stay there again, especially in the summer (there is also a canoe and a dock for the lake!). The location is also close to many grocery stores, churches, shopping, etc but feels remote and quiet.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. I'm so sorry we couldn't get the gas fireplace fixed for you. We are still working on getting the parts. It's an older model and we are having some challenges getting the parts. We hope you can make it back in the summer and enjoy the pond!

Great location for our relocated Thanksgiving!

  • 5 of 5

We had to bring Thanksgiving north this year since our son plays basketball and couldn't make it home. Your house was the perfect location. Your kitchen was well stocked for all my turkey day prep. We enjoyed a roaring fire in the outdoor pit on Thanksgiving Day. The kids ventured out with the canoes for a bit and the views are fabulous. A few suggestions to perhaps consider but in no way impacted our stay: 1). Hooks on the back of the bedroom doors to hang towels. 2). Update the vacuum cleaner. 3). Recycling info...does Shrewsbury recycle?

Thanks for sharing your lovely home with us!! If basketball doesn't allow our boy to make it home next year, hope we can come back!

PS- Note to future renters: The neighbors dogs may greet you at check-in (a St. Bernard and shepherd mix). They startled us at our late night check in but we quickly discovered they are friendly!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind review. I'm so glad your family was able to enjoy your Thanksgiving at the lake. We'd love to have you back next year. I appreciate your input on improvements. We've only been renting the house for a little over a year. We've gotten great input from guest and have been implementing as we go. We will certainly add some hooks on the doors for towels and look into a new vacuum. Shrewsbury does recycle but it is picked up every other Monday and has to be left at the end of the road early Monday mornings. We've had challenges figuring out how to do that with guests typically leaving on Sundays.

Even better than last time

  • 4 of 5

This place is the perfect spot for our family to reconnect while visiting out daughter for college family weekend. This was our second stay, and it was even better than the last time. We appreciated the improvements in the basement and enjoyed the pool table this year, in addition to the canoes, the fire pits and the gorgeous surroundings. Thanks!

Enjoyed lake front

  • 3 of 5

The house was in a good location and being on the water was nice and beautiful. There were no essentials in the house so we had to buy paper products, dish soap, toilet paper, etc. There is a slight mildew smell & the air conditioner was not cold. The house was good for us as we spent most of the time outside which was great!

Lovely setting with mixed building and dock conditions

  • 3 of 5

Good things: Setting is exquisite. Common areas nicely remodeled and very pleasant. Canoes and outdoor decks and sitting areas very nice. Structural problems: cannot get to main floor (from outside or from basement), or between rooms, without navigating stairs, and there are no railings on any of the steps. This would be a code problem in all the states I have lived in. Basement particularly is musty. Outlets in 1 bedroom did not work. My husband had to sweep away brown recluse webs to get at circuit box. When we could not fix problem, owner had electrician there 3 days into our 7 day stay. No outside lighting. Upkeep problems: sliding closet door off hinges in one bedroom. Closet was unusable. All sliding doors difficult to slide. Bedroom had unappealingly soiled and torn carpets. No mattress pad on stained mattresses or pillow protectors on soiled pillows. Pillow cases too small for some pillows. Bedroom lamp did not work. Light bulbs filthy. This New England pond is, as expected, full of weeds, but access to floating dock ladder not maintained. Land dock was covered in duck droppings. Should be cleaned before guests arrive. Oven did not heat to temperature. Stovetop heated poorly. Unwelcoming touches: there was 1/2 roll of toilet paper & paper towels, dish and laundry detergent as well as liquid hand soap dispensers almost empty. I can understand some rationing, but nowhere was it stated we had to provide these basics. Owner unresponsive to my complaint about toilet paper. I didn't bother to complain about the other things. Despite these annoyances we enjoyed our stay overall since we had good weather and the setting is so lovely, and the common areas were pleasant enough. Bad weather might have caused even greater frustration since AC in 1 bedroom did not work and we would not have been able to open windows or enjoy the outside.

Owner's Response: I'm so sorry about the delay in getting the electrician to respond to the issue. The first day I contacted him he was on a job and said he would get there late that day or the next. When I followed up after the no show the first day he promised he would get there late the 2nd day. I was unaware until the morning of the 3rd day that he had again failed to arrive. In the past he has been very responsive. We do not supply toilet paper, paper towels etc. I will update the house information to let future guests know. Typically the previous guest leave behind enough for the next guest initial arrival. This has been standard in any of the homes we've rented thru VRBO. Thanks for your feedback and we will work on resolving some of the other issues you mention.
