|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
This exquisite 6 bedroom chalet is located in the heart of the Bernese Oberland, near Aeschi bei Spiez, at the end of a private lane, 400m from the nearest house. It offers some of the most stunning views in Switzerland.
The spacious living area includes a large, comfortable lounge with breathtaking views on 3 sides, and a fireplace. The entire house was renovated in 2011, and features wifi, satellite flat screen TV, and new bathrooms.
All bedrooms offer spectacular views. Both terraces are south facing, and, with a BBQ, are perfect for al fresco dining both in Summer and in Winter. The large garden backs onto a nature reserve. The chalet is particularly suited for those who like a wide choice of activities, in an exclusive, secluded setting.
Aeschi itself is packed with restaurants and a wide variety of things to do. Cross country skiing and extensive walking paths all pass within meters of the chalet, and some of the best downhill skiing is within a very short drive away.
Close your eyes, imagine The Sound of Music, think of Heidi and Peter, then open them and look out of the windows of Halteweidli – breath the pure mountain air, and relax! It is not rare to see deer, chamois and other wild animals grazing just under the kitchen window when you get up to make your first cup of coffee.
Walk through the nature reserve, up mountains, or along relatively flat paths, to the waterfall and enjoy a drink and something to eat at a mountain hut, or walk down to Lake Thun to take a steamer ride, or buy some freshly caught fish from the local fisherman.
Summer in Halteweidli is the most exhilarating time – the chalet is tucked away, half a kilometer from the main road, with breathtaking views from every window, as well as its’ two terraces and large garden.
The chalet is particularly child-friendly with a large split-level playroom-come-bedroom, sledges, board games, puzzles, high chair, etc. It is located right next to the largest Lama and Acapulco herd in Europe (250 animals), and in a village that offers great slopes for beginners and younger skiers.
There are so many things to do, both in the surrounding countryside, but also a bit further afield, that you just won't have time to do them all!
Visit Ballenberg open air museum and it’s 250 Swiss farm houses, Interlaken or the Top of Europe Jungfrau train, take a funicular up the Niesen for a spectacular sunset, or visit the caviar farm in Frutigen, or take a pedalo ride on the Blauesee in Kandersteg.
Within one kilometer of the chalet go Western Riding, rent an electric bike, a mountain bike, or go for a carriage ride - or just visit the local pool and it's spa.
The possibilities are endless, but lying on the terrace, far from it all, enjoying the view of the whole of the Kandertal, must be one of the nicest “activities” of them all!
In the Winter, you are in the heart of some of the best skiing in the world. Mythical names such as Wengen, Adelboden-Lenk, Kandersteg, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and of course Gstaad are just 30 minutes away. Not to speak of the Jungfrau region. It is ideally located for those who like discovering new slopes every day, whilst enjoying the quality of life of a beautifully secluded spot in an exceptional setting.
Aeschiried itself has 4 lifts for children and beginners, but is really renown for its’ cross country skiing. Over 30km of trails, the main one passing 50m from the front door, offer both spectacular views and the peacefulness of skiing thru a nature reserve.
At Christmas, Halteweidli is in the heart of Aeschi’s Weihnachtsweg (Christmas Path), where twelve beautiful crèche scenes depicting the Christmas story illuminate a trail through the snow-covered countryside. Warm refreshments reward visitors at the end of the trail on the neighbouring Lama farm.
And of course, after a long day outside, what could be better than to relax in front of the open fire, with a nice glass of wine in your hand, surrounded by friends and family.
I grew up in Switzerland in England, and I've spent most of my adult life in Switzerland. I married into a Swiss family who come from the tiny mountain village of Aeschi, and Halteweidli is their family home.
I serve as director on a number of high-tech companies, and two charities, and live near Geneva.
Jane Royston purchased this chalet in 2011
The chalet was the dream chalet that my in-laws built when they retired. They had always walked along the trail that passes the chalet, and had always sat in the meadow where it is built for their picnic, dreaming of one day being able to build their dream house there. And that is exactly what they did.
I bought the chalet in 2011 and have renovated it completely: replaced the roof completely, putting triple glazed windows in, changing the bathrooms, and putting in solar heating.
The chalet has to be seen and lived in to believe. It is really unique. It has amazing views from all sides. A sweeping view of the Thunersee and all the mountains on one side, and right down the Kandertal on the other side, through big bay windows make you feel as if you're in paradise every time you look out.
As it's set completely on it's own (400m from the nearest house), at the end of a long private lane, deer, foxes, squirrels, quietly grazing or walking nearby, and it is a perfect antidote to the stressful life I live.
We were very privileged to spend a few days of our holidays in Switzerland at Halteweidli, an unforgettable chalet in which we celebrated our 1 year old twin daughter’s birthday. The chalet is just idyllic, a truly enjoyable place, very tastefully decorated. It reminded us to the chalet pictured at Hitchcock’s movie North by Northwest). It is cosy, extremely well equipped, particularly the kitchen and the children’s play room and, to cap it all, it is surrounded by the most impressive landscapes. All the rooms are very comfortable and well furnished. The views from the windows to the mountains and the valley are unique, very dramatic, and really spectacular. The location is just ideal; so central that you can reach most landmarks and towns in Switzerland in no time. Although we only stayed there for a few days, we managed to make some tourism and visit Thun, Interlaken, Neuchâtel, Lucerne and Bern. It is a very enjoyable and extremely recommendable chalet for a relaxing holiday both, in the summer and in the winter, and it is just a few minutes away from the idyllic Spiez, a very beautiful lakeside village where you can eat the most delicious Kaisersmorren and spent a lovely day at Freybad, a leisure club with lovely views and great leisure facilities. We would love to come back to chalet Halteweidli one day. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Jane and Harry for making our holiday in Switzerland so unforgettable. The Jané-Heidsiek family.
Nochmals vielen Dank Jane!
When we (the ten of us, including four small children) pulled up to the parking area on an overcast and partly rainy day we were immediately stunned by the view into the Kandertal. It reminded us of illustrations in fairy tale books: the dark pine trees thorough which mysteriously meandered the fog, anticipating magic creatures populating the woods with the giant Niesen standing by like a guardian. The impression was not lost on the children who daily explored the surrounding woods in search of mystery. Early morning hikes up and down the valley also exhilarated some of us adults.
The inside of the house was no less stunning; the living area a bright wide open tastefully decorated space, a large chessboard by the window inviting to contemplation and relaxation, a solid wooden table in the dining area. The kitchen was well equipped to produce great family meals. The children’s bedroom simulating a hayloft was a hit from the start. The rooms were simply decorated and neat. One greatly appreciated feature we took advantage of daily was the terrace equipped with a large table and plenty of chairs and a retractable awning. Even a slight drizzle could not spoil the enjoyment of our fondue (in Aeschiried, across from the indoor pool is a good butcher who also keeps a very nice selection of higher quality cheeses than found in the chain stores). Last not least, Halteweidli is an ideal place to enjoy the Berner Oberland, both its pastoral charm as well as the tourist attractions a short ride away (Lake Thun, Jungraujoch, Aareschlucht etc). The owner evidently takes pride in the property and supplies a very detailed instruction and recommendations manual.
We looked for a quiet place to stay in the Berner Oberland area and we got it!
A spacious Chalet for just the two of us, just perfect for two couples and/ or a large family.
We were so lucky to find a perfect place to stay
Unfortunately we were there less than a week
We were seven adults and there was room for all of us
The hostess, Jane, thinks of everything
We made car trips each day from there and looked forward to returning each evening to prepare a beautiful dinner
The info sheets and personal attention we received couldn't have been better
Location and services were also just what we needed
I'm so glad I discovered this gem

We were 10 family members of Swiss origin living in the USA (6 adults and 4 teenagers) on a 2 week vacation at the Halteweidli. The chalet was just perfect for us, plenty of room, very clean and well equipped, exactly as described on the "Home Away" website. and, of course, the location was great with beautiful views and plenty of opportunities for great sightseeing trips. We can highly recommend it. Having a car is a plus as you can get to Spiez, Thun, Interlaken in no time where there is plenty of sightseeing and shopping. We all enjoyed it very much and we want to thank Jane for her assistance both by emeil and telephone.
The house was ideal for our retreat. We were 8 and had plenty of room in the spacious lounge to spread out and enjoy the roaring fire. When we weren't working, we went for hikes along the river and got to see the alpacas up close. The property is in great condition, clean with a well equipped kitchen. The "Useful Information" sheet was extensive with lists of restaurants and nearby things to do. We enjoyed a tasty dinner in the Chemihuette Restaurant and practiced curling in nearby Thun on our last day. A fabulous setting and well worth another visit!
Located on the outskirts of Aeschi bei Speiz, our chalet offers the perfect setting for exploring some of the worlds’ best skiing in the Winter (Wengen, Adelboden, Lauterbrunnen, Kandersteg, Gstaad, Grindelwald) and offers extensive walking in the Summer.
The chalet is set quite on its own, and backs onto the Suldtal nature reserve, making it a perfect setting for outdoor activities including hiking, climbing and mountain biking.
There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy water sports including sailing, windsurfing and white water rafting on or near Lake Thun. There are also several golf courses nearby. The towns of Bern, Thun, Interlaken, Gstaad, are within easy reach and are great for sightseeing, shopping and packed with museums, art galleries and other attractions. And of course, the Top of Europe train to the top of the Jungfrau is a real must!
The nearest airport is Bern just 30mins away, otherwise Zurich or Geneva airports are also within easy reach.
The bus stop is almost at the end of our private lane, about 500m from the chalet.
