The Holding Ground is a pretty detached beach front property set in the seaside village of Torcross. The house has been sympathetically refurbished to a high standard whilst preserving its original features, a large open fireplace with wood burning stove, stone and wooden floors and exposed beams. The house has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a wet room,a large open plan sitting room and dining area, a well equipped kitchen and utility room and a small enclosed garden.

The Holding Ground

The front door leads into the spacious open plan sitting room with wood burning stove, wooden floor with underfloor heating, a 3D TV and Dvd player and a dining area, window seats looking straight out to sea. There is a large well equipped bespoke kitchen with an Aga and dishwasher. A utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer and a wet room with basin and wc. there is a cloak/bootroom which leads out to the small enclosed rear garden.

Upstairs there are three bedrooms, the main bedroom with lovely sea view from the window seat has a double bed and en suite shower room with large walk in shower, basin and wc. The second bedroom has two singles and the third bedroom can be a double or two singles and sea views from the window seat. There is an additional bathroom with over the bath shower, basin and wc.

There are plenty of local books and maps in the house as well as board games, dvds and books.

One parking permit is provided, if you require additional temporary permits these can be purchased at the Tourist Information in Kingsbridge, Dartmouth or Totnes.

Included: Bedding and bed linen, towels. Electricity, oil and gas. The telephone is free to use for local calls, but calls to national, international, premium rate or mobiles will be charged and deducted from the security deposit. Wireless broadband is also free to use but you must bring a wireless-enabled laptop to use it. Please note that mobile reception is patchy.

Basic cleaning items such as washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, toilet roll, washing machine powder, tin foil, cling film, black bin liners are also provided.

No smoking

Dogs – we accept up to two. Please note – the dogs are not allowed upstairs or on the furniture, and we expect the garden to be free of any mess on departure.

Dogs are allowed on Slapton Sands all year round.

Fabulous Christmas break!

Better than we could have hoped! Four of us stayed and had a Christmas that we will remember forever.

First impressions were excellent. The house was beautifully clean and welcoming and a delicious food hamper had been left for us on the table.

The kitchen was fabulously well equipped..everything needed to create Christmas treats..the beds were comfortable and the fire kept us very snug.

A great farm shop located nearby and we were able to pre-order all our Christmas supplies. lots of great walks and to top it all the weather was bright and sunny!

We will definitely be coming back.

We didn't want to leave!

We had an absolutely marvellous week at the Holding Ground. As far as holiday lets go, we have never stayed in one so comfortable, well-equipped and beautiful. The location is just the icing on the cake, and everyone in our party - from 70 to three years old - was completely enamoured with it.

On arrival at the house, we discovered many thoughtful touches; the bottle of wine left by the owners for us, the fresh milk in the fridge, comfortable beds already made up with spotless white bed linen, soft fluffy towels in each room, beach chairs, fishing nets and a whole library of useful information and advice about the local area.

The laundry room with not one, but two, tumble driers, plus adjoining wet room, was a real boon for coming back from days spent on the beach. Eating your morning toast and tea sitting on the wall looking out to sea was a wonderful way to start each day.

We will be back.

5 Star All The Way - Brilliant!

We went for a week to celebrate Mothers 90th. it is not just that everything is provided, but it is all such good quality, and so much thought has been put into the styling and décor. There were six of us, and it was very spacious.

The beds are very comfortable, and the bed linen top notch. Individual heater controls in each room ensures everyone is catered for, and the boiler just never runs out of hot water. Under floor heating is an added luxury, and nice in the very powerful showers, plenty of big fluffy towels.

Comfortable furniture, great TV, games, CD's, books, magazines, radios, DVD player, beach equipment and towels, and a phone if you want.

A well stocked dry goods cupboard,(just replace what you finish) saves a lot of time and money.

We don't have a dog, but I noticed that they have a well stocked cupboard as well.

Good instruction folder for all the equipment, and everything worked.

The kitchen is a dream, and so well equipped, there was not one item wanted we could not find, and nice to use a real Aga.

Laundry room with top class appliances.

Faces the sea, East, so wonderful sunrises, and the bench by the front door was well used for morning coffee. Sun in the afternoon in the private back garden.

Torcross is small, but close to Kingsbridge, Dartmouth, and Totness. Good buses, easy parking, great local pubs and restaurants.

This is better than home, a real treat. We will be back.

Cosy Christmas

Four of us stayed at Holding Ground this Christmas, including two octogenarians. The decor made it feel like a home not a commercial establishment. The under floor heating created a cosy and warm feel, just right this soggy Yule Tide. The real fire was a bonus. For those of us at the front of the house we were lulled to sleep each night by the rhythmic sound of waves on the shore, all of 20m away.

I’m a cookaholic; I found the Aga with its six gas burners and four electric ovens fantastic and plenty of working space including a large island unit. Cooking for Christmas has never been so easy. The kitchen was well stocked with the essentials, both equipment and comestibles, so much of what we took down with us were redundant.

When the rest of the family were after a change from my cooking the local pub/restaurant was less than 100m away. Walking along the front was flat for those that are not as good on their pins as in years past.

Temporary parking at the front door made loading and unloading in the rain less troublesome than it would have been.

The owner was proactively helpful in supplying information and explanations. The descriptions were fair and the property in excellent order when we arrived, this included fresh milk and mince pies – hot from the oven.

If you want a S. Devon seaside there can’t be many better properties of this size.

wot a brilliant week

we have been going to Torcross for the last 20 years and stayed in different accommodation, but the Holding Ground was by far the best. everything about it was spot on, it was warm,cosy,comfortable and very relaxing,fantastic kitchen,woodburner lovely and warm,good tv if you want a night in and whats even better pop on to the internet for a browse order your shopping to be delivered BRILLIANT dont have to waste time shopping,or pop to the start bay or the boat house for anything you fancy.sally's little paper shop handy just round corner for any odds and sods.

we also found the Holding Ground's little garden at the back was ideal for privacy and our two lovely dogs which are walked for miles while we are there and its great to walk on the beach with your early morning brew. we would highley recommend the holding ground, but book early to avoid disappointment.

Wow.....Stunning holiday accomodation!!

We have recently stayed at the Holding Ground in Torcross. The facilities are of a very high standard, very very comfortable beds and the living area is warm and relaxing. The owner was very helpful and approachable when booking, and a lovely welcome gift was waiting for us upon our arrival. The property is well maintained and very clean throughout, deck chairs, beach towels and bath towels are provided and there is a stock of condiments available. The Holding Ground allows pets so we were able to take our beloved dogs on holiday with us. Torcross is a lovely area of the south hams, i spent most of my childhood holidays in and around the area of Torcross. My husband and I returned this year with our two teenage sons, my mother and my aunt who was visiting from Canada. We all had a fantastic holiday with the added bonus of glorious weather. There is an abundance of attractions/activities for all ages to enjoy. The food at the Start Bay inn and the Queens head at Slapton is good value for money. If you dont mind cooking, the farm shop in Stokenham is well stocked with yummy provisions. We will definitley be returning to the Holding Ground. Thanks Jessica x

Torcross is a small coastal village between Dartmouth and Kingsbridge, situated in South Hams which is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Torcross is unusual in that it has water on both sides. Start Bay to the east where a small fishing fleet uses the wide beach to launch from, and to the west Slapton Ley a large freshwater lake and nature reserve which is a major attraction for birds and birdwatchers.

Torcross lies on the South West Coastal Path, walkers can follow the path from here passing the ruins of Hallsands, an evacuated village which was washed away in 1917. Continue along to the lighthouse at Start Point from where you will get an excellent view over Start Bay, here the path continues over the cliffs to Prawle Point and ends at East Portlemouth where you can take the passenger ferry across the Kingsbridge Estuary to Salcombe.

Small as it is, Torcross offers all the facilities you may need. You'll find a post-office, general store, butchers, gift shop, cafes, pub and restaurant. It is a great location for walking, swimming, birdwatching and of course relaxing!
