Overview

About the property

Self-catering, heated private pool, 9 bedrooms, grounds

La Sauzade is a beautiful country house, built in the 18th century, within walking distance of the historic village Aubeterre-sur-Dronne. The house is intended to be my home rather than just a holiday let and every detail has been chosen with that approach in mind.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable. Nearly all of the rooms look over the front lawn and swimming pool.

The ground floor consists of a large kitchen with substantial (2 m diameter) table, sitting room or family room, entrance hall, dining room, library. Behind the dining room and library is a down stairs bedroom with dressing room, stone fireplace, and its own bathroom. (Bedrooms are described below).

The house is furnished with antique furniture, as well as a wide screen Sony TV, separate TV, two play stations, DVD player, impressive DVD collection, table tennis, etc.

I am now taking bookings for weeks in 2017. If you are interested in booking during the summer holidays (or half term) in 2017 I strongly recommend that you book now.

PLEASE NOTE THAT CHANGEOVER DURING THE SEASON IS ON A FRIDAY UNLESS AGREED OTHERWISE

Why Justin chose Charente

Please see the reviews written by previous guests. The house has a lovely feel - it swallows people up and makes a great venue for a party of 15 adults and children. The pool is a total suntrap.

Magical Holiday

  • 5 of 5

While the photos of the house are stunning, they do not do justice to the house in real life which is just gorgeous. Grand but comfortable and with so much space. We were five families with children from 1 to 7 and all had the most wonderful time. The house has everything you could need and all the bedrooms are large and airy with the most comfortable beds. The grounds are huge and the kids were off for hours exploring and picking fruit from the trees. The pool is a godsend and always warm. The area itself is beautiful and we spent almost every day the river beach with wonderful swimming and a lovely little cafe. We have decided to come back every two years and make it a tradition as the children grow up. Cant thank you enough for letting us stay in your home. Best holiday!

Lovely house and lovely grounds

  • 5 of 5

Our family had such a lovely time whilst staying at La Sauzade. There were 5 children in our group who loved the heated pool in particular. The house had various options of where to eat and drink and it never felt crowded. One evening we ate in Aubeterre square and had a lazy long lunch at La Terrace (very good) just off of the square. Tried the butchers and the meat was also very very good. Creperie la Sucre was good for a quick lunch and served Bretton Cidre which was fab. We revisited St Emillion which was less than an hour away. Some of the group went swimming in the river during their stay. We wandered around both the Saturday morning market in Aubeterre (bought oysters tried all grades, very nice) the night market on Thursday was also good. Tracy was very helpful and only a call away if you needed assistance. The house is kept very clean. Justin, the owner, is also great to deal with. Stay 4-11 August

A perfect place for families to escape

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in June with two other families (each with a toddler). One of the best holidays I've been on. La Sauzade is such a wonderful place to relax in, with a long lawn for running around on, a heated pool and enough space inside the house for guests to not get on top of each other. the house is beautifully appointed, with cool interiors offering a respite from the heat; outside dining areas; a spacious living room and a big kitchen for communal breakfasts. It's ideal for groups of friends. Highly recommended - thank you Justin

Comfortable, happy, home from home holiday in beautiful area of France

  • 4 of 5

La Souzade has a very friendly atmosphere and ambience and represents good value for money.

The furnishings are tasteful and very much in keeping with the property and the fact that they are well worn in places makes it less worrying for parents of young children.

We had a very happy family holiday and loved going into beautiful Aubeterre each day ( many of the family walking) and going to the well- kept river beach the other side of the small town.

We are certainly planning to come again as a family party although we will be glad if the safety features mentioned in the Visitors Book have been put into place by next year ( the caretakers seem to think that is likely) as that would make it a genuinely idyllic family destination to which I would certainly give the full 5 stars. Justin makes it clear in his literature that parents must at all times keep a close eye on their children, which is fair, but appropriate fencing would take the stress off.

The caretakers were very friendly and helpful and a great bonus was some prearranged ( by Tracy) catering by a local expat : excellent food , beautifully presented and at a reasonable price.

Altogether an excellent holiday in a lovely setting. Thank you Justin and Laura for providing such a great venue.

Amazing house, elegant and stylish but also relaxed

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful house that very much feels like a home. In spite of terrible weather we had a lovely time in here. All the rooms are huge and it's the perfect place for a group of friends as we were.

Aubeterre: river beach
Car: recommended

La Sauzade is within walking distance of Aubeterre, one of Les plus beaux villages de France (this is, apparently, an official recognition rather than my own assessment).

The village has everything you might need for a relaxing French holiday including a range of restaurants and bars, post office, bakers, weekly market, bank, hairdresser, etc, as well as various craft shops celling local ceramics and jewellery.

Aubeterre is mostly built of stone and reflects the popular perception of an idyllic French village; there are 2 medieval churches, including one built from a single piece of stone which is the largest monolithic church in Europe.

During the summer there is a river beach in the village, with canoes, bicycles for hire and horse riding.

The house is also within easy driving distance of numerous famous towns and sights such as Bergerac, Surat, Cognac, and countless pretty villages.
