Relaxing & Charming Gîte in the French Countryside

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a week and had a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing time. We were looking for the peace and quiet of the French countryside and we certainly found it here. Set on a hill with gorgeous views of the surrounding valley, the gîte itself has been beautifully designed to include all the comforts of home and more. We like to cook most of our meals and found the kitchen to be very spacious and well-equipped for this purpose. There's a large dining table inside as well as one on the patio. We really enjoyed being able to eat outside when the weather permitted. The pool provides a refreshing and relaxing way to spend the afternoon when not out and about or when you return from an adventure and need to cool off. The master bedroom is very large with a comfortable bed and spacious en-suite bathroom including a tub and a separate tiled shower. There is even a half-bath off the living room so others don't have to intrude on your personal space. Upstairs in the pigeon tower is another well-designed bathroom and two single beds. We did not need to make use of this space, but it would be perfect for a family with two children or even teenagers. One of the gîte's unique features is the underfloor heating and cooling system. Since we were traveling during a bit of a heat wave, we really appreciated this. We were cool and comfortable throughout our stay.

If you stay here during the summer, make sure to check out the Marché Nocturne (night market) on Wednesdays in nearby Monségur. We enjoyed being able to share a small part of local French culture. There are many food stalls from which you can purchase your dinner and plenty of covered seating where you can listen enjoy live music and dancing. If you prefer, you can have dinner at one of the restaurants surrounding the square. We chose Le Grand Cep and were extremely pleased with the very reasonably priced gourmet "menu" that was served in the style of a 5-star restaurant. It was absolutely delicious!

Our host, Nicole, did everything to make our stay pleasant. She checked on us often to see whether or not we needed anything, but was not instrusive. This was probably our best of many gîte experiences yet. We would not hesitate to stay here again.

Amazing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We could not have found a more peaceful, idyllic place to stay. Nicole was a great host, nothing was too much trouble. The pigeonnier was wonderful, had everything we needed, the pool was amazing and Nicole was very flexible and kind with letting us have it for longer in the evening if she was out, not a problem to have family over for some pool fun. Would recommend without hesitation and we will certainly be back.

Stay comfortably in a pigeon house!

  • 4 of 5

Le Pigeonnier’ is a pleasant and quiet country house, renovated in style and comfortably furnished, with a shady terrace. From the tower you have a splendid view over the hills to Monségur, an ancient ‘bastide’ from 13th century. Each year in July a sprawling jazz festival takes place in Monségur, ‘Les 24heures du Swing’. We have come here already for several years, and now we are looking forward to take a dive into the swimming pool, that was completed last year. Nicole is very helpful and does everything to make you feel comfortable.

Owner's Response: As Monsegur is in the Bordeaux wine region (Bordeaux Sup[erieur for red wines and Entre-Deux Mers for whites), wine lovers will be interested to know that the Vinexpo (The international wine fair) will be held from 16 to 20 June 2013 in Bordeaux. Other dates for your diaries, "Les 24 heures du Swing" (Monsegur Jazz Festival will be held tfrom 5 to 7 July 2013. From the owner, Nicole Jones

Really enjoyable place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

This is a really pleasant place to stay. The building has been nicely restored and it is very well equipped. The owner has added a pool for 2013, which I haven't seen yet, but I look forward to using it next time. I do like this part of France. It is very relaxed but without traveling too far you can find events, concerts and many things to do. Every year in early July a jazz festival takes over the nearby hilltop town of Monsegur, which makes a great weekend. If you like wine then there are numerous vineyards in the area, including my favourite organic one, Chateau La Plante, where the owner will talk about his passion all day (a little French helps..). The Pigeonnier is great for up to four people who want a quiet holiday or a base to explore the area. Enjoy!

Gîte très agréable et très calme.

  • 5 of 5

The Pigeonnier du Puy is situated in the heart of France’s making wine region, just 3km from the Bastide town of Monsegur. The countryside offers a patchwork of vineyards, fruit orchards and medieval towns making it beautiful to take in, whether you are canoeing, cycling or walking. For those interested in a day trip to the ocean visit the amazing Dune de Pyla. Gironde is rich in history. If you are interested in 30 000 year old cave drawings go to Pair-non Pair; alternatively visit any number of the local medieval towns with stunning churches and imposing fortifications. Famous nearby historical towns include Bordeaux, Bergerac, St Emillion and Duras. There are plenty of opportunities to visit local vineyards in the surrounding area, or you can walk over to the neighboring vineyard just two hundred yards away and buy an award winning bottle at the Chateau de Tuilleries. There is now a swimming-pool (4 1/2m x 11m) shared between the owner and the holidaymakers.

An annual Jazz Festival is held on the first weekend of July in Monsegur.

The little town of Duras, its chateauand its wine cooperative are must-see places
